Matthew 26

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Jesus had now finished al he wanted to say, and he told his disciples,	1 Et il advint, quand Jésus eut achevé tous ces discours, qu'il dit à ses disciples:
2 'It wil be Passover, as you know, in two days' time, and the Son of man wil be handed over to becrucified.'	2 "La Pâque, vous le savez, tombe dans deux jours, et le Fils de l'homme va être livré pour êtrecrucifié."
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whosename was Caiaphas,	3 Alors les grands prêtres et les anciens du peuple s'assemblèrent dans le palais du Grand Prêtre,qui s'appelait Caïphe,
4 and made plans to arrest Jesus by some trick and have him put to death.	4 et se concertèrent en vue d'arrêter Jésus par ruse et de le tuer.
5 They said, however, 'It must not be during the festivities; there must be no disturbance among thepeople.'	5 Ils disaient toutefois: "Pas en pleine fête; il faut éviter un tumulte parmi le peuple."
6 Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease,when	6 Comme Jésus se trouvait à Béthanie, chez Simon le lépreux,
7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment, and poured it on his head ashe was at table.	7 une femme s'approcha de lui, avec un flacon d'albâtre contenant un parfum très précieux, et ellele versa sur sa tête, tandis qu'il était à table.
8 When they saw this, the disciples said indignantly, 'Why this waste?	8 A cette vue les disciples furent indignés: "A quoi bon ce gaspillage? Dirent-ils;
9 This could have been sold for a high price and the money given the poor.'	9 cela pouvait être vendu bien cher et donné à des pauvres."
10 But Jesus noticed this and said, 'Why are you upsetting the woman? What she has done for me isindeed a good work!	10 Jésus s'en aperçut et leur dit: "Pourquoi tracassez-vous cette femme? C'est vraiment une bonneoeuvre qu'elle a accomplie pour moi.
11 You have the poor with you always, but you wil not always have me.	11 Les pauvres, en effet, vous les aurez toujours avec vous, mais moi, vous ne m'aurez pastoujours.
12 When she poured this ointment on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.	12 Si elle a répandu ce parfum sur mon corps, c'est pour m'ensevelir qu'elle l'a fait.
13 In truth I tel you, wherever in al the world this gospel is proclaimed, what she has done will be toldas well, in remembrance of her.'	13 En vérité je vous le dis, partout où sera proclamé cet Evangile, dans le monde entier, on rediraaussi, à sa mémoire, ce qu'elle vient de faire."
14 Then one of the Twelve, the man cal ed Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests	14 Alors l'un des Douze, appelé Judas Iscariote, se rendit auprès des grands prêtres
15 and said, 'What are you prepared to give me if I hand him over to you?' They paid him thirty silverpieces,	15 et leur dit: "Que voulez-vous me donner, et moi je vous le livrerai?" Ceux-ci lui versèrent 30pièces d'argent.
16 and from then onwards he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.	16 Et de ce moment il cherchait une occasion favorable pour le livrer.
17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus to say, 'Where do you want usto make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?'	17 Le premier jour des Azymes, les disciples s'approchèrent de Jésus et lui dirent: "Où veux-tu quenous te préparions de quoi manger la Pâque?"
18 He said, 'Go to a certain man in the city and say to him, "The Master says: My time is near. It is atyour house that I am keeping Passover with my disciples." '	18 Il dit: "Allez à la ville, chez un tel, et dites-lui: Le Maître te fait dire: Mon temps est proche,c'est chez toi que je vais faire la Pâque avec mes disciples."
19 The disciples did what Jesus told them and prepared the Passover.	19 Les disciples firent comme Jésus leur avait ordonné et préparèrent la Pâque.
20 When evening came he was at table with the Twelve.	20 Le soir venu, il était à table avec les Douze.
21 And while they were eating he said, 'In truth I tell you, one of you is about to betray me.'	21 Et tandis qu'ils mangeaient, il dit: "En vérité je vous le dis, l'un de vous me livrera."
22 They were greatly distressed and started asking him in turn, 'Not me, Lord, surely?'	22 Fort attristés, ils se mirent chacun à lui dire: "Serait-ce moi, Seigneur?"
23 He answered, 'Someone who has dipped his hand into the dish with me wil betray me.	23 Il répondit: "Quelqu'un qui a plongé avec moi la main dans le plat, voilà celui qui va me livrer!
24 The Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whom theSon of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born!'	24 Le Fils de l'homme s'en va selon qu'il est écrit de lui; mais malheur à cet homme-là par qui leFils de l'homme est livré! Mieux eût valu pour cet homme-là de ne pas naître!"
25 Judas, who was to betray him, asked in his turn, 'Not me, Rabbi, surely?' Jesus answered, 'It is youwho say it.'	25 A son tour, Judas, celui qui allait le livrer, lui demanda: "Serait-ce moi, Rabbi" - "Tu l'as dit",répond Jésus.
26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gaveit to the disciples. 'Take it and eat,' he said, 'this is my body.'	26 Or, tandis qu'ils mangeaient, Jésus prit du pain, le bénit, le rompit et le donna aux disciples endisant: "Prenez, mangez, ceci est mon corps."
27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them saying, 'Drink from this, allof you,	27 Puis, prenant une coupe, il rendit grâces et la leur donna en disant: "Buvez-en tous;
28 for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.	28 car ceci est mon sang, le sang de l'alliance, qui va être répandu pour une multitude en rémissiondes péchés.
29 From now on, I tel you, I shal never again drink wine until the day I drink the new wine with you inthe kingdom of my Father.'	29 Je vous le dis, je ne boirai plus désormais de ce produit de la vigne jusqu'au jour où je le boiraiavec vous, nouveau, dans le Royaume de mon Père."
30 After the psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.	30 Après le chant desMatthieu Psaumes, ils partirent pour le mont des Oliviers.
31 Then Jesus said to them, 'You wil al fall away from me tonight, for the scripture says: I shal strikethe shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered,	31 Alors Jésus leur dit: "Vous tous, vous allez succomber à cause de moi, cette nuit même. Il estécrit en effet: Je frapperai le pasteur, et les brebis du troupeau seront dispersées.
32 but after my resurrection I shal go ahead of you to Galilee.'	32 Mais après ma résurrection je vous précéderai en Galilée."
33 At this, Peter said to him, 'Even if al fal away from you, I wil never fal away.'	33 Prenant la parole, Pierre lui dit: "Si tous succombent à cause de toi, moi je ne succomberaijamais."
34 Jesus answered him, 'In truth I tel you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will have disownedme three times.'	34 Jésus lui répliqua: "En vérité je te le dis: cette nuit même, avant que le coq chante, tu m'aurasrenié trois fois."
35 Peter said to him, 'Even if I have to die with you, I wil never disown you.' And al the disciples saidthe same.	35 Pierre lui dit: "Dussé-je mourir avec toi, non, je ne te renierai pas." Et tous les disciples en direntautant.
36 Then Jesus came with them to a plot of land called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, 'Stayhere while I go over there to pray.'	36 Alors Jésus parvient avec eux à un domaine appelé Gethsémani, et il dit aux disciples: "Restezici, tandis que je m'en irai prier là-bas."
37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him. And he began to feel sadness and anguish.	37 Et prenant avec lui Pierre et les deux fils de Zébédée, il commença à ressentir tristesse etangoisse.
38 Then he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point of death. Wait here and stay awake with me.'	38 Alors il leur dit: "Mon âme est triste à en mourir, demeurez ici et veillez avec moi."
39 And going on a little further he fel on his face and prayed. 'My Father,' he said, 'if it is possible, letthis cup pass me by. Nevertheless, let it be as you, not I, would have it.'	39 Etant allé un peu plus loin, il tomba face contre terre en faisant cette prière: "Mon Père, s'il estpossible, que cette coupe passe loin de moi! Cependant, non pas comme je veux, mais comme tu veux."
40 He came back to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, 'So you had not thestrength to stay awake with me for one hour?	40 Il vient vers les disciples et les trouve en train de dormir; et il dit à Pierre: "Ainsi, vous n'avezpas eu la force de veiller une heure avec moi!
41 Stay awake, and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is willing enough, but human nature isweak.'	41 Veillez et priez pour ne pas entrer en tentation: l'esprit est ardent, mais la chair est faible."
42 Again, a second time, he went away and prayed: 'My Father,' he said, 'if this cup cannot pass by, butI must drink it, your wil be done!'	42 A nouveau, pour la deuxième fois, il s'en alla prier: "Mon Père, dit-il, si cette coupe ne peutpasser sans que je la boive, que ta volonté soit faite!"
43 And he came back again and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy.	43 Puis il vint et les trouva à nouveau en train de dormir; car leurs yeux étaient appesantis.
44 Leaving them there, he went away again and prayed for the third time, repeating the same words.	44 Il les laissa et s'en alla de nouveau prier une troisième fois, répétant les mêmes paroles.
45 Then he came back to the disciples and said to them, 'You can sleep on now and have your rest.Look, the hour has come when the Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.	45 Alors il vient vers les disciples et leur dit: "Désormais vous pouvez dormir et vous reposer: voicitoute proche l'heure où le Fils de l'homme va être livré aux mains des pécheurs.
46 Get up! Let us go! Look, my betrayer is not far away.'	46 Levez-vous! Allons! Voici tout proche celui qui me livre."
47 And suddenly while he was stil speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared, and with him a largenumber of men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and elders of the people.	47 Comme il parlait encore, voici Judas, l'un des Douze, et avec lui une bande nombreuse armée deglaives et de bâtons, envoyée par les grands prêtres et les anciens du peuple.
48 Now the traitor had arranged a sign with them saying, 'The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him.'	48 Or le traître leur avait donné ce signe: "Celui à qui je donnerai un baiser, c'est lui; arrêtez-le."
49 So he went up to Jesus at once and said, 'Greetings, Rabbi,' and kissed him.	49 Et aussitôt il s'approcha de Jésus en disant: "Salut, Rabbi", et il lui donna un baiser.
50 Jesus said to him, 'My friend, do what you are here for.' Then they came forward, seized Jesus andarrested him.	50 Mais Jésus lui dit: "Ami, fais ta besogne." Alors, s'avançant, ils mirent la main sur Jésus etl'arrêtèrent.
51 And suddenly, one of the fol owers of Jesus grasped his sword and drew it; he struck the high priest'sservant and cut off his ear.	51 Et voilà qu'un des compagnons de Jésus, portant la main à son glaive, le dégaina, frappa leserviteur du Grand Prêtre et lui enleva l'oreille.
52 Jesus then said, 'Put your sword back, for al who draw the sword wil die by the sword.	52 Alors Jésus lui dit: "Rengaine ton glaive; car tous ceux qui prennent le glaive périront par leglaive.
53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, who would promptly send more than twelvelegions of angels to my defence?	53 Penses-tu donc que je ne puisse faire appel à mon Père, qui me fournirait sur-le-champ plus dedouze légions d'anges?
54 But then, how would the scriptures be fulfil ed that say this is the way it must be?'	54 Comment alors s'accompliraient les Ecritures d'après lesquelles il doit en être ainsi?"
55 It was at this time that Jesus said to the crowds, 'Am I a bandit, that you had to set out to capture mewith swords and clubs? I sat teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid a hand on me.'	55 A ce moment-là Jésus dit aux foules: "Suis-je un brigand, que vous vous soyez mis encampagne avec des glaives et des bâtons pour me saisir? Chaque jour j'étais assis dans le Temple, à enseigner, etvous ne m'avez pas arrêté."
56 Now al this happened to fulfil the prophecies in scripture. Then al the disciples deserted him and ranaway.	56 Or tout ceci advint pour que s'accomplissent les Ecritures des prophètes. Alors les disciplesl'abandonnèrent tous et prirent la fuite.
57 The men who had arrested Jesus led him off to the house of Caiaphas the high priest, where thescribes and the elders were assembled.	57 Ceux qui avaient arrêté Jésus l'emmenèrent chez Caïphe le Grand Prêtre, où se réunirent lesscribes et les anciens.
58 Peter followed him at a distance right to the high priest's palace, and he went in and sat down withthe attendants to see what the end would be.	58 Quant à Pierre, il le suivait de loin, jusqu'au palais du Grand Prêtre; il pénétra à l'intérieur ets'assit avec les valets, pour voir le dénouement.
59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus, however false,on which they might have him executed.	59 Or, les grands prêtres et le Sanhédrin tout entier cherchaient un faux témoignage contre Jésus,en vue de le faire mourir;
60 But they could not find any, though several lying witnesses came forward. Eventually two cameforward	60 et ils n'en trouvèrent pas, bien que des faux témoins se fussent présentés en grand nombre.Finalement il s'en présenta deux,
61 and made a statement, 'This man said, "I have power to destroy the Temple of God and in three daysbuild it up." '	61 qui déclarèrent: "Cet homme a dit: Je puis détruire le Sanctuaire de Dieu et le rebâtir en troisjours."
62 The high priest then rose and said to him, 'Have you no answer to that? What is this evidence thesemen are bringing against you?'	62 Se levant alors, le Grand Prêtre lui dit: "Tu ne réponds rien? Qu'est-ce que ces gens attestentcontre toi?"
63 But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, 'I put you on oath by the living God to tel us ifyou are the Christ, the Son of God.'	63 Mais Jésus se taisait. Le Grand Prêtre lui dit: "Je t'adjure par le Dieu Vivant de nous dire si tu esle Christ, le Fils de Dieu" --
64 Jesus answered him, 'It is you who say it. But, I tel you that from this time onward you wil see theSon of man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.'	64 "Tu l'as dit, lui dit Jésus. D'ailleurs je vous le déclare: dorénavant, vous verrez le Fils del'homme siégeant à droite de la Puissance et venant sur les nuées du ciel."
65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, 'He has blasphemed. What need of witnesses have wenow? There! You have just heard the blasphemy.	65 Alors le Grand Prêtre déchira ses vêtements en disant: "Il a blasphémé! qu'avons-nous encorebesoin de témoins? Là, vous venez d'entendre le blasphème!
66 What is your opinion?' They answered, 'He deserves to die.'	66 Qu'en pensez-vous?" Ils répondirent: "Il est passible de mort."
67 Then they spat in his face and hit him with their fists; others said as they struck him,	67 Alors ils lui crachèrent au visage et le giflèrent; d'autres lui donnèrent des coups
68 'Prophesy to us, Christ! Who hit you then?'	68 en disant: "Fais le prophète, Christ, dis-nous qui t'a frappé."
69 Meanwhile Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came up to him saying, 'You,too, were with Jesus the Galilean.'	69 Cependant Pierre était assis dehors, dans la cour. Une servante s'approcha de lui en disant: "Toiaussi, tu étais avec Jésus le Galiléen."
70 But he denied it in front of them al . 'I do not know what you are talking about,' he said.	70 Mais lui nia devant tout le monde en disant: "Je ne sais pas ce que tu dis."
71 When he went out to the gateway another servant-girl saw him and said to the people there, 'Thisman was with Jesus the Nazarene.'	71 Comme il s'était retiré vers le porche, une autre le vit et dit à ceux qui étaient là: "Celui-là étaitavec Jésus le Nazôréen."
72 And again, with an oath, he denied it, 'I do not know the man.'	72 Et de nouveau il nia avec serment: "Je ne connais pas cet homme."
73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, 'You are certainly one of them too! Why, youraccent gives you away.'	73 Peu après, ceux qui se tenaient là s'approchèrent et dirent à Pierre: "Sûrement, toi aussi, tu en es:et d'ailleurs ton langage te trahit."
74 Then he started cursing and swearing, 'I do not know the man.' And at once the cock crowed,	74 Alors il se mit à jurer avec force imprécations: "Je ne connais pas cet homme." Et aussitôt uncoq chanta.
75 and Peter remembered what Jesus had said, 'Before the cock crows you wil have disowned methree times.' And he went outside and wept bitterly.	75 Et Pierre se souvint de la parole que Jésus avait dite: "Avant que le coq chante, tu m'auras reniétrois fois." Et, sortant dehors, il pleura amèrement.
