1 Jesus had now finished al he wanted to say, and he told his disciples,	1 Ed avvendo Gesù terminato tutti questi sermoni, disse a' suoi discepoli:
2 'It wil be Passover, as you know, in two days' time, and the Son of man wil be handed over to becrucified.'	2 Voi sapete, che di qui a due giorni sarà la pasqua, e il Figliuolo dell'uomo sarà tradito per essere crocifisso.
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whosename was Caiaphas,	3 Allora si adunarono i principi de' sacerdoti, e gli anziani del popolo nel palazzo de' principi de' sacerdoti, che si chiamava Caifa:
4 and made plans to arrest Jesus by some trick and have him put to death.	4 E tenner consiglio, affine di catturare per via d'inganno Gesù, e ucciderlo.
5 They said, however, 'It must not be during the festivities; there must be no disturbance among thepeople.'	5 Ma dicevano: Non in giorno di festa, perché non succeda qualche tumulto tra 'l popolo.
6 Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease,when	6 Ed essendo Geiù a Betania in casa di Simone il lebbroso,
7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment, and poured it on his head ashe was at table.	7 Si appressò a lui una donna con un vaso di alabastro di prezioso unguento, e lo sparse sul capo di lui, ch'era a mensa.
8 When they saw this, the disciples said indignantly, 'Why this waste?	8 Veduto ciò, i discepoli se l'ebbero a male, e dissero: A che fine tanta profusione?
9 This could have been sold for a high price and the money given the poor.'	9 Imperocché poteva quest' unguento vendersi a caro prezzo, e darsi a' poveri.
10 But Jesus noticed this and said, 'Why are you upsetting the woman? What she has done for me isindeed a good work!	10 Ma avendo ciò inteso Gesù disse loro: Perché inquietate voi questa donna? imperocché ella ha fatto una buona opera inverso di me.
11 You have the poor with you always, but you wil not always have me.	11 Conciossiachè avete sempre con voi de' poveri; ma quanto a me non mi avete per sempre:
12 When she poured this ointment on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.	12 Imperocché quand' ella ha sparso quest' unguento sopra il mio corpo, l'ha fatto come per seppellirmi.
13 In truth I tel you, wherever in al the world this gospel is proclaimed, what she has done will be toldas well, in remembrance of her.'	13 In verità vi dico, che, dovunque sarà predicato questo Vangelo pel monndo tutto, si narrerà ancora in sua ricordanza quel, ch'ella ha fatto.
14 Then one of the Twelve, the man cal ed Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests	14 Allora uno dei dodici, che chiamavasi Giuda Iscariote, se n'andò a trovare i principi dei sacerdoti:
15 and said, 'What are you prepared to give me if I hand him over to you?' They paid him thirty silverpieces,	15 E disse loro: Che volete darmi, e io ve lo darò nelle mani? Ed essi gli assegnarono trenta danari d'argento.
16 and from then onwards he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.	16 E d'allora in poi cercava l'opportunità di tradirlo.
17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus to say, 'Where do you want usto make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?'	17 Or il primo giorno degli azzimi si accostarono a Gesù i discepoli, e gli dissero: Dove vuoi, che ti prepariamo per mangiare la pasqua?
18 He said, 'Go to a certain man in the city and say to him, "The Master says: My time is near. It is atyour house that I am keeping Passover with my disciples." '	18 Gesù rispose: Andate in città da un tale, e ditegli: Il Maestro dice: La mia ora è vicina; io fo la pasqua in casa tua co' miei discepoli.
19 The disciples did what Jesus told them and prepared the Passover.	19 E i discepoli fecero, conforme aveva loro ordinato Gesù, e prepararon la pasqua.
20 When evening came he was at table with the Twelve.	20 E fattosi sera, era a tavola coi dodici suoi discepoli.
21 And while they were eating he said, 'In truth I tell you, one of you is about to betray me.'	21 E mentre mangiavano, disse: In verità vi dico, che uno di voi mi tradirà.
22 They were greatly distressed and started asking him in turn, 'Not me, Lord, surely?'	22 Ed essi afflitti grandemente cominciarono a dire a uno a uno: Son forse io, o Signore?
23 He answered, 'Someone who has dipped his hand into the dish with me wil betray me.	23 Ed egli rispose, e disse: Colui, che mette con meco la mano nel piatto, questi mi tradirà.
24 The Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whom theSon of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born!'	24 E quanto al figliuolo dell'uomo, egli se ne va, conforme di lui sta scritto: ma guai a quell'uomo, per cui il Figliuolo dell'uomo sarà tradito: era bene per lui, che non fosse mai nato quell'uomo.
25 Judas, who was to betray him, asked in his turn, 'Not me, Rabbi, surely?' Jesus answered, 'It is youwho say it.'	25 Ma Giuda, il quale lo tradiva, rispose, e disse: Son forse io, o Maestro? Dissegli: Tu l'hai detto.
26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gaveit to the disciples. 'Take it and eat,' he said, 'this is my body.'	26 E mentre quelli cenavano, Gesù prese il pane, e lo benedisse, e lo spezzò, e lo dette a' suoi discepoli, e disse: Prendete, e mangiate: questo è il mio corpo.
27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them saying, 'Drink from this, allof you,	27 E preso il calice, rendette le grazie, e lo diede loro, dicendo: Bevete di questo tutti.
28 for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.	28 Imperocché questo è il sangue mio del nuovo testamento, il quale sarà sparso per molti per la remissione de' peccati.
29 From now on, I tel you, I shal never again drink wine until the day I drink the new wine with you inthe kingdom of my Father.'	29 Or io vi dico, che non berrò da ora in poi di questo frutto della vite sino a quel giorno, che io lo berrò nuovo con voi nel regno del Padre mio.
30 After the psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.	30 E cantato l'inno, andarono al monte Oliveto.
31 Then Jesus said to them, 'You wil al fall away from me tonight, for the scripture says: I shal strikethe shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered,	31 Allora disse loro Gesù: Tutti voi patirete scandalo per me in questa notte. Imperocché sta scritto: Percuoterò il pastore, saran disperse le pecorelle del gregge.
32 but after my resurrection I shal go ahead of you to Galilee.'	32 Ma risuscitato che io sia, vi anderò avanti nella Galilea.
33 At this, Peter said to him, 'Even if al fal away from you, I wil never fal away.'	33 Ma Pietro gli rispose, e disse: Quandi anche tutti fosser per patire scandalo per te, non sarà mai, che io sia scandalizzato.
34 Jesus answered him, 'In truth I tel you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will have disownedme three times.'	34 Gesù gli disse: In verità ti dico, che questa notte, prima che il gallo canti, mi rinnegherai tre volte.
35 Peter said to him, 'Even if I have to die with you, I wil never disown you.' And al the disciples saidthe same.	35 Pietro gli disse: Quand' anche dovessi morir teco, non ti negherò. E nello stesso modo parlarono anche tutti i discepoli.
36 Then Jesus came with them to a plot of land called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, 'Stayhere while I go over there to pray.'	36 Allora Gesù andò con essi in un luogo chiamato Getsemani, e disse a' suoi discepoli: Trattenetevi qui, mentre io vado là, e fo orazione.
37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him. And he began to feel sadness and anguish.	37 E presi con seco Pietro, e i due figliuoli di Zebedeo, cominciò a rattristarsi, e a cadere in mestizia.
38 Then he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point of death. Wait here and stay awake with me.'	38 Allora disse loro: L'anima mia è afflitta sino alla morte: restate qui, e vegliate con me.
39 And going on a little further he fel on his face and prayed. 'My Father,' he said, 'if it is possible, letthis cup pass me by. Nevertheless, let it be as you, not I, would have it.'	39 E avanzatosi alcun poco, si prostrò per terra orando, e dicendo: padre mio, se è possibile, passi da me questo calice: per altro non come voglia io, ma come vuoi tu.
40 He came back to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, 'So you had not thestrength to stay awake with me for one hour?	40 E andò da' suoi discepoli, e trovogli addormentati, e disse a Pietro: Cosi, adunque non avete potuto vegliare un'ora con me?
41 Stay awake, and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is willing enough, but human nature isweak.'	41 Vegliate, e orate, affinché non entriate nella tentazione. Lo spirito veramente è pronto, ma la carne è stanca.
42 Again, a second time, he went away and prayed: 'My Father,' he said, 'if this cup cannot pass by, butI must drink it, your wil be done!'	42 E se ne andò di nuovo per la seconda volta, e orò, dicendo: Padre mio, se non può questo calice passare, senzachè io lo beva, sia fatta la tua volontà.
43 And he came back again and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy.	43 E tornato di nuovo li trovò, addormentati; imperocché gli occhi loro erano aggravati.
44 Leaving them there, he went away again and prayed for the third time, repeating the same words.	44 E lasciatigli, andò di nuovo, e orò per la terza volta, dicendo le stesse parole.
45 Then he came back to the disciples and said to them, 'You can sleep on now and have your rest.Look, the hour has come when the Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.	45 Allora andò da' suoi discepoli, e disse loro: Su via dormite, e riposatevi: ecco è vicina l'ora, e il Figliuolo dell'uomo sarà dato nelle mani de' pecccatori.
46 Get up! Let us go! Look, my betrayer is not far away.'	46 Alzatevi, andiamo: ecco che si avvicina colui, che mi tradirà.
47 And suddenly while he was stil speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared, and with him a largenumber of men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and elders of the people.	47 Mentre ei tutt'ora parlava, ecco arrivò Giuda uno de' dodici, e con esso gran turba con ispade, e bastoni, mandata da' principi de' sacerdoti, e dagli anziani del popolo.
48 Now the traitor had arranged a sign with them saying, 'The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him.'	48 E colui, che lo tradì, aveva dato loro il segnale, dicendo: Quegli, che io bacerò, è adesso: pigliatelo.
49 So he went up to Jesus at once and said, 'Greetings, Rabbi,' and kissed him.	49 E subitamente accostatosi a Gesù, disse: Dio ti salvi, o Maestro. E baciollo.
50 Jesus said to him, 'My friend, do what you are here for.' Then they came forward, seized Jesus andarrested him.	50 E Gesù dissegli: Amico, a che fine se' venuto? Allora si fecero avanti, e miser le mani addosso a Gesù, e lo tennero stretto.
51 And suddenly, one of the fol owers of Jesus grasped his sword and drew it; he struck the high priest'sservant and cut off his ear.	51 Ed ecco uno di quelli, che erano con Gesù, stesa la mano, tirò fuori la spada, e ferì un servo del principe de' sacerdoti, mozzandogli un'orecchia.
52 Jesus then said, 'Put your sword back, for al who draw the sword wil die by the sword.	52 Allora Gesù gli disse: Rimetti la tua spada in suo luogo: imperocché tutti quelli, che daran di mano alla spada, di spada periranno.
53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, who would promptly send more than twelvelegions of angels to my defence?	53 Pensi tu forse, che io non possa pregare il Padre mio, e mi porrà dinanzi adesso più di dodici legioni di Angeli?
54 But then, how would the scriptures be fulfil ed that say this is the way it must be?'	54 Come adunque si adempiranno le scritture, a tenor delle quali dee esser così?
55 It was at this time that Jesus said to the crowds, 'Am I a bandit, that you had to set out to capture mewith swords and clubs? I sat teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid a hand on me.'	55 In quel punto disse Gesù alle turbe: Come si fa per un assassino, siete venuti armati di spade, e bastoni per pigliarmi: ogni dì io stava tra voi sedendo nel tempio a insegnare, nè mi avete preso.
56 Now al this happened to fulfil the prophecies in scripture. Then al the disciples deserted him and ranaway.	56 E tutto questo è avvenuto, affinchè si adempissero le scritture de' profeti. Allora tutti i discepoli, abbandonatolo, se ne fuggirono.
57 The men who had arrested Jesus led him off to the house of Caiaphas the high priest, where thescribes and the elders were assembled.	57 Ma quegli aferrato Gesù, lo condussero da Caifa principe de' sacerdoti, dove si erano radunati gli Scribi, e gli anziani.
58 Peter followed him at a distance right to the high priest's palace, and he went in and sat down withthe attendants to see what the end would be.	58 E Pietro lo seguiva alla lontana; sino all'atrio del principe de' sacerdoti. Ed entrato dentro stava a sedere co' ministri per vedere la fine.
59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus, however false,on which they might have him executed.	59 E i principi de' sacerdoti, e tutto il consiglio cercavano false testimonianze contro Gesù per farlo morire.
60 But they could not find any, though several lying witnesses came forward. Eventually two cameforward	60 E non le trovavano, essendosi presentati molti falsi testimonj. Ma alla fine vennero due testimonj falsi,
61 and made a statement, 'This man said, "I have power to destroy the Temple of God and in three daysbuild it up." '	61 E dissero: Costui ha detto: Posso distruggere il tempio di Dio, e rifabbricarlo in tre giorni.
62 The high priest then rose and said to him, 'Have you no answer to that? What is this evidence thesemen are bringing against you?'	62 E alzatosi il principe de' sacerdoti, gli disse: Non rispondi nulla a quel, che questi depongono contro di te?
63 But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, 'I put you on oath by the living God to tel us ifyou are the Christ, the Son of God.'	63 Ma Gesù si taceva. E il principe de' sacerdoti gli disse: Ti scongiuro pel Dio vivo, che ci dica, se tu sii il Cristo il Figliuolo di Dio.
64 Jesus answered him, 'It is you who say it. But, I tel you that from this time onward you wil see theSon of man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.'	64 Gesù gli rispose: Tu l'hai detto; Anzi vi dico, che vedrete di poi il Figliuolo dell'uomo sedere alla destra della virtù di Dio, e venire su le nubi del cielo.
65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, 'He has blasphemed. What need of witnesses have wenow? There! You have just heard the blasphemy.	65 Allora il principe de' sacerdoti stracciò le sue vesti, dicendo: Ha bestemmiato: che bisogno abbiam più di testimonj? ecco avete ora sentito la bestemmia.
66 What is your opinion?' They answered, 'He deserves to die.'	66 Che ve ne pare? Quelli risposero: E' reo di morte.
67 Then they spat in his face and hit him with their fists; others said as they struck him,	67 Allora gli sputarono in faccia, e lo percossero co' pugni: e altri gli dettero degli schiaffi,
68 'Prophesy to us, Christ! Who hit you then?'	68 Dicendo: Cristo, profetizzaci, chi è, che ti ha percosso?
69 Meanwhile Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came up to him saying, 'You,too, were with Jesus the Galilean.'	69 Pietro poi sedeva fuora nell'atrio: e si accostò a lui una serva, e dissegli; Anche tu eri con Gesù Galileo.
70 But he denied it in front of them al . 'I do not know what you are talking about,' he said.	70 Ma egli negò dinanzi a tutti, dicendo: Non so quel, che tu dica.
71 When he went out to the gateway another servant-girl saw him and said to the people there, 'Thisman was with Jesus the Nazarene.'	71 E uscito lui dalla porta, lo vide un'altra serva, e disse a' circostanti: Anche costui era con Gesù Nazareno.
72 And again, with an oath, he denied it, 'I do not know the man.'	72 Ed egli negò di bel nuovo con giuramento: Non conosco quest'uomo.
73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, 'You are certainly one of them too! Why, youraccent gives you away.'	73 E di lì a poco i circostanti si appressarono, e dissero a Pietro: Veramente anche tu se' uno di quegli: imperocché anche il tuo linguaggio ti dà a conoscere.
74 Then he started cursing and swearing, 'I do not know the man.' And at once the cock crowed,	74 Allora cominciò egli a mandarsi delle imprecazioni, e a spergiurare, che non aveva conosciuto tal uomo. E tosto il gallo cantò.
75 and Peter remembered what Jesus had said, 'Before the cock crows you wil have disowned methree times.' And he went outside and wept bitterly.	75 E Pietro si ricordò della parola dettagli da Gesù: Prima che canti il gallo, mi negherai tre volte, E uscito fuora pianse amaramente.
