NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Jesus had now finished al he wanted to say, and he told his disciples,1 Et factum est : cum consummasset Jesus sermones hos omnes, dixit discipulis suis :
'It wil be Passover, as you know, in two days' time, and the Son of man wil be handed over to becrucified.'2 Scitis quia post biduum Pascha fiet, et Filius hominis tradetur ut crucifigatur.
Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whosename was Caiaphas,3 Tunc congregati sunt principes sacerdotum, et seniores populi, in atrium principis sacerdotum, qui dicebatur Caiphas :
and made plans to arrest Jesus by some trick and have him put to death.4 et consilium fecerunt ut Jesum dolo tenerent, et occiderent.
They said, however, 'It must not be during the festivities; there must be no disturbance among thepeople.'5 Dicebant autem : Non in die festo, ne forte tumultus fieret in populo.
Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease,when6 Cum autem Jesus esset in Bethania in domo Simonis leprosi,
a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment, and poured it on his head ashe was at table.7 accessit ad eum mulier habens alabastrum unguenti pretiosi, et effudit super caput ipsius recumbentis.
When they saw this, the disciples said indignantly, 'Why this waste?8 Videntes autem discipuli, indignati sunt, dicentes : Ut quid perditio hæc ?
This could have been sold for a high price and the money given the poor.'9 potuit enim istud venundari multo, et dari pauperibus.
But Jesus noticed this and said, 'Why are you upsetting the woman? What she has done for me isindeed a good work!10 Sciens autem Jesus, ait illis : Quid molesti estis huic mulieri ? opus enim bonum operata est in me.
You have the poor with you always, but you wil not always have me.11 Nam semper pauperes habetis vobiscum : me autem non semper habetis.
When she poured this ointment on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.12 Mittens enim hæc unguentum hoc in corpus meum, ad sepeliendum me fecit.
In truth I tel you, wherever in al the world this gospel is proclaimed, what she has done will be toldas well, in remembrance of her.'13 Amen dico vobis, ubicumque prædicatum fuerit hoc Evangelium in toto mundo, dicetur et quod hæc fecit in memoriam ejus.
Then one of the Twelve, the man cal ed Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests14 Tunc abiit unus de duodecim, qui dicebatur Judas Iscariotes, ad principes sacerdotum :
and said, 'What are you prepared to give me if I hand him over to you?' They paid him thirty silverpieces,15 et ait illis : Quid vultis mihi dare, et ego vobis eum tradam ? At illi constituerunt ei triginta argenteos.
and from then onwards he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.16 Et exinde quærebat opportunitatem ut eum traderet.
Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus to say, 'Where do you want usto make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?'17 Prima autem die azymorum accesserunt discipuli ad Jesum, dicentes : Ubi vis paremus tibi comedere Pascha ?
He said, 'Go to a certain man in the city and say to him, "The Master says: My time is near. It is atyour house that I am keeping Passover with my disciples." '18 At Jesus dixit : Ite in civitatem ad quemdam, et dicite ei : Magister dicit : Tempus meum prope est, apud te facio Pascha cum discipulis meis.
The disciples did what Jesus told them and prepared the Passover.19 Et fecerunt discipuli sicut constituit illis Jesus, et paraverunt Pascha.
When evening came he was at table with the Twelve.20 Vespere autem facto, discumbebat cum duodecim discipulis suis.
And while they were eating he said, 'In truth I tell you, one of you is about to betray me.'21 Et edentibus illis, dixit : Amen dico vobis, quia unus vestrum me traditurus est.
They were greatly distressed and started asking him in turn, 'Not me, Lord, surely?'22 Et contristati valde, cœperunt singuli dicere : Numquid ego sum Domine ?
He answered, 'Someone who has dipped his hand into the dish with me wil betray me.23 At ipse respondens, ait : Qui intingit mecum manum in paropside, hic me tradet.
The Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whom theSon of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born!'24 Filius quidem hominis vadit, sicut scriptum est de illo : væ autem homini illi, per quem Filius hominis tradetur ! bonum erat ei, si natus non fuisset homo ille.
Judas, who was to betray him, asked in his turn, 'Not me, Rabbi, surely?' Jesus answered, 'It is youwho say it.'25 Respondens autem Judas, qui tradidit eum, dixit : Numquid ego sum Rabbi ? Ait illi : Tu dixisti.
Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gaveit to the disciples. 'Take it and eat,' he said, 'this is my body.'26 Cœnantibus autem eis, accepit Jesus panem, et benedixit, ac fregit, deditque discipulis suis, et ait : Accipite, et comedite : hoc est corpus meum.
Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them saying, 'Drink from this, allof you,27 Et accipiens calicem, gratias egit : et dedit illis, dicens : Bibite ex hoc omnes.
for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.28 Hic est enim sanguis meus novi testamenti, qui pro multis effundetur in remissionem peccatorum.
From now on, I tel you, I shal never again drink wine until the day I drink the new wine with you inthe kingdom of my Father.'29 Dico autem vobis : non bibam amodo de hoc genimine vitis usque in diem illum, cum illud bibam vobiscum novum in regno Patris mei.
After the psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.30 Et hymno dicto, exierunt in montem Oliveti.
Then Jesus said to them, 'You wil al fall away from me tonight, for the scripture says: I shal strikethe shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered,31 Tunc dicit illis Jesus : Omnes vos scandalum patiemini in me in ista nocte. Scriptum est enim : Percutiam pastorem, et dispergentur oves gregis.
but after my resurrection I shal go ahead of you to Galilee.'32 Postquam autem resurrexero, præcedam vos in Galilæam.
At this, Peter said to him, 'Even if al fal away from you, I wil never fal away.'33 Respondens autem Petrus, ait illi : Et si omnes scandalizati fuerint in te, ego numquam scandalizabor.
Jesus answered him, 'In truth I tel you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will have disownedme three times.'34 Ait illi Jesus : Amen dico tibi, quia in hac nocte, antequam gallus cantet, ter me negabis.
Peter said to him, 'Even if I have to die with you, I wil never disown you.' And al the disciples saidthe same.35 Ait illi Petrus : Etiamsi oportuerit me mori tecum, non te negabo. Similiter et omnes discipuli dixerunt.
Then Jesus came with them to a plot of land called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, 'Stayhere while I go over there to pray.'36 Tunc venit Jesus cum illis in villam, quæ dicitur Gethsemani, et dixit discipulis suis : Sedete hic donec vadam illuc, et orem.
He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him. And he began to feel sadness and anguish.37 Et assumpto Petro, et duobus filiis Zebedæi, cœpit contristari et mœstus esse.
Then he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point of death. Wait here and stay awake with me.'38 Tunc ait illis : Tristis est anima mea usque ad mortem : sustinete hic, et vigilate mecum.
And going on a little further he fel on his face and prayed. 'My Father,' he said, 'if it is possible, letthis cup pass me by. Nevertheless, let it be as you, not I, would have it.'39 Et progressus pusillum, procidit in faciem suam, orans, et dicens : Pater mi, si possibile est, transeat a me calix iste : verumtamen non sicut ego volo, sed sicut tu.
He came back to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, 'So you had not thestrength to stay awake with me for one hour?40 Et venit ad discipulos suos, et invenit eos dormientes, et dicit Petro : Sic non potuistis una hora vigilare mecum ?
Stay awake, and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is willing enough, but human nature isweak.'41 Vigilate, et orate ut non intretis in tentationem. Spiritus quidem promptus est, caro autem infirma.
Again, a second time, he went away and prayed: 'My Father,' he said, 'if this cup cannot pass by, butI must drink it, your wil be done!'42 Iterum secundo abiit, et oravit, dicens : Pater mi, si non potest hic calix transire nisi bibam illum, fiat voluntas tua.
And he came back again and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy.43 Et venit iterum, et invenit eos dormientes : erant enim oculi eorum gravati.
Leaving them there, he went away again and prayed for the third time, repeating the same words.44 Et relictis illis, iterum abiit, et oravit tertio, eumdem sermonem dicens.
Then he came back to the disciples and said to them, 'You can sleep on now and have your rest.Look, the hour has come when the Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.45 Tunc venit ad discipulos suos, et dicit illis : Dormite jam, et requiescite : ecce appropinquavit hora, et Filius hominis tradetur in manus peccatorum.
Get up! Let us go! Look, my betrayer is not far away.'46 Surgite, eamus : ecce appropinquavit qui me tradet.
And suddenly while he was stil speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared, and with him a largenumber of men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and elders of the people.47 Adhuc eo loquente, ecce Judas unus de duodecim venit, et cum eo turba multa cum gladiis et fustibus, missi a principibus sacerdotum, et senioribus populi.
Now the traitor had arranged a sign with them saying, 'The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him.'48 Qui autem tradidit eum, dedit illis signum, dicens : Quemcumque osculatus fuero, ipse est, tenete eum.
So he went up to Jesus at once and said, 'Greetings, Rabbi,' and kissed him.49 Et confestim accedens ad Jesum, dixit : Ave Rabbi. Et osculatus est eum.
Jesus said to him, 'My friend, do what you are here for.' Then they came forward, seized Jesus andarrested him.50 Dixitque illi Jesus : Amice, ad quid venisti ? Tunc accesserunt, et manus injecerunt in Jesum, et tenuerunt eum.
And suddenly, one of the fol owers of Jesus grasped his sword and drew it; he struck the high priest'sservant and cut off his ear.51 Et ecce unus ex his qui erant cum Jesu, extendens manum, exemit gladium suum, et percutiens servum principis sacerdotum amputavit auriculam ejus.
Jesus then said, 'Put your sword back, for al who draw the sword wil die by the sword.52 Tunc ait illi Jesus : Converte gladium tuum in locum suum : omnes enim, qui acceperint gladium, gladio peribunt.
Or do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, who would promptly send more than twelvelegions of angels to my defence?53 An putas, quia non possum rogare patrem meum, et exhibebit mihi modo plusquam duodecim legiones angelorum ?
But then, how would the scriptures be fulfil ed that say this is the way it must be?'54 Quomodo ergo implebuntur Scripturæ, quia sic oportet fieri ?
It was at this time that Jesus said to the crowds, 'Am I a bandit, that you had to set out to capture mewith swords and clubs? I sat teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid a hand on me.'55 In illa hora dixit Jesus turbis : Tamquam ad latronem existis cum gladiis et fustibus comprehendere me : quotidie apud vos sedebam docens in templo, et non me tenuistis.
Now al this happened to fulfil the prophecies in scripture. Then al the disciples deserted him and ranaway.56 Hoc autem totum factum est, ut adimplerentur Scripturæ prophetarum. Tunc discipuli omnes, relicto eo, fugerunt.
The men who had arrested Jesus led him off to the house of Caiaphas the high priest, where thescribes and the elders were assembled.57 At illi tenentes Jesum, duxerunt ad Caipham principem sacerdotum, ubi scribæ et seniores convenerant.
Peter followed him at a distance right to the high priest's palace, and he went in and sat down withthe attendants to see what the end would be.58 Petrus autem sequebatur eum a longe, usque in atrium principis sacerdotum. Et ingressus intro, sedebat cum ministris, ut videret finem.
The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus, however false,on which they might have him executed.59 Principes autem sacerdotum, et omne concilium, quærebant falsum testimonium contra Jesum, ut eum morti traderent :
But they could not find any, though several lying witnesses came forward. Eventually two cameforward60 et non invenerunt, cum multi falsi testes accessissent. Novissime autem venerunt duo falsi testes,
and made a statement, 'This man said, "I have power to destroy the Temple of God and in three daysbuild it up." '61 et dixerunt : Hic dixit : Possum destruere templum Dei, et post triduum reædificare illud.
The high priest then rose and said to him, 'Have you no answer to that? What is this evidence thesemen are bringing against you?'62 Et surgens princeps sacerdotum, ait illi : Nihil respondes ad ea, quæ isti adversum te testificantur ?
But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, 'I put you on oath by the living God to tel us ifyou are the Christ, the Son of God.'63 Jesus autem tacebat. Et princeps sacerdotum ait illi : Adjuro te per Deum vivum, ut dicas nobis si tu es Christus Filius Dei.
Jesus answered him, 'It is you who say it. But, I tel you that from this time onward you wil see theSon of man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.'64 Dicit illi Jesus : Tu dixisti. Verumtamen dico vobis, amodo videbitis Filium hominis sedentem a dextris virtutis Dei, et venientem in nubibus cæli.
Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, 'He has blasphemed. What need of witnesses have wenow? There! You have just heard the blasphemy.65 Tunc princeps sacerdotum scidit vestimenta sua, dicens : Blasphemavit : quid adhuc egemus testibus ? ecce nunc audistis blasphemiam :
What is your opinion?' They answered, 'He deserves to die.'66 quid vobis videtur ? At illi respondentes dixerunt : Reus est mortis.
Then they spat in his face and hit him with their fists; others said as they struck him,67 Tunc exspuerunt in faciem ejus, et colaphis eum ceciderunt, alii autem palmas in faciem ejus dederunt,
'Prophesy to us, Christ! Who hit you then?'68 dicentes : Prophetiza nobis Christe, quis est qui te percussit ?
Meanwhile Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came up to him saying, 'You,too, were with Jesus the Galilean.'69 Petrus vero sedebat foris in atrio : et accessit ad eum una ancilla, dicens : Et tu cum Jesu Galilæo eras.
But he denied it in front of them al . 'I do not know what you are talking about,' he said.70 At ille negavit coram omnibus, dicens : Nescio quid dicis.
When he went out to the gateway another servant-girl saw him and said to the people there, 'Thisman was with Jesus the Nazarene.'71 Exeunte autem illo januam, vidit eum alia ancilla, et ait his qui erant ibi : Et hic erat cum Jesu Nazareno.
And again, with an oath, he denied it, 'I do not know the man.'72 Et iterum negavit cum juramento : Quia non novi hominem.
A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, 'You are certainly one of them too! Why, youraccent gives you away.'73 Et post pusillum accesserunt qui stabant, et dixerunt Petro : Vere et tu ex illis es : nam et loquela tua manifestum te facit.
Then he started cursing and swearing, 'I do not know the man.' And at once the cock crowed,74 Tunc cœpit detestari et jurare quia non novisset hominem. Et continuo gallus cantavit.
and Peter remembered what Jesus had said, 'Before the cock crows you wil have disowned methree times.' And he went outside and wept bitterly.75 Et recordatus est Petrus verbi Jesu, quod dixerat : Priusquam gallus cantet, ter me negabis. Et egressus foras, flevit amare.
