NEW JERUSALEMLXX
Jesus had now finished al he wanted to say, and he told his disciples,1 Καὶ ἐγένετο ὅτε ἐτέλεσεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς πάντας τοὺς λόγους τούτους, εἶπεν τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ·
'It wil be Passover, as you know, in two days' time, and the Son of man wil be handed over to becrucified.'2 οἴδατε ὅτι μετὰ δύο ἡμέρας τὸ πάσχα γίνεται, καὶ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοται εἰς τὸ σταυρωθῆναι.
Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whosename was Caiaphas,3 Τότε συνήχθησαν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι τοῦ λαοῦ εἰς τὴν αὐλὴν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως τοῦ λεγομένου Καϊάφα
and made plans to arrest Jesus by some trick and have him put to death.4 καὶ συνεβουλεύσαντο ἵνα τὸν Ἰησοῦν δόλῳ κρατήσωσιν καὶ ἀποκτείνωσιν·
They said, however, 'It must not be during the festivities; there must be no disturbance among thepeople.'5 ἔλεγον δέ· μὴ ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ, ἵνα μὴ θόρυβος γένηται ἐν τῷ λαῷ.
Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease,when6 Τοῦ δὲ Ἰησοῦ γενομένου ἐν Βηθανίᾳ ἐν οἰκίᾳ Σίμωνος τοῦ λεπροῦ,
a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment, and poured it on his head ashe was at table.7 προσῆλθεν αὐτῷ γυνὴ ἔχουσα ἀλάβαστρον μύρου βαρυτίμου καὶ κατέχεεν ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ ἀνακειμένου.
When they saw this, the disciples said indignantly, 'Why this waste?8 ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ μαθηταὶ ἠγανάκτησαν λέγοντες· εἰς τί ἡ ἀπώλεια αὕτη;
This could have been sold for a high price and the money given the poor.'9 ἐδύνατο γὰρ τοῦτο πραθῆναι πολλοῦ καὶ δοθῆναι πτωχοῖς.
But Jesus noticed this and said, 'Why are you upsetting the woman? What she has done for me isindeed a good work!10 Γνοὺς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· τί κόπους παρέχετε τῇ γυναικί; ἔργον γὰρ καλὸν ἠργάσατο εἰς ἐμέ·
You have the poor with you always, but you wil not always have me.11 πάντοτε γὰρ τοὺς πτωχοὺς ἔχετε μεθ’ ἑαυτῶν, ἐμὲ δὲ οὐ πάντοτε ἔχετε·
When she poured this ointment on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.12 βαλοῦσα γὰρ αὕτη τὸ μύρον τοῦτο ἐπὶ τοῦ σώματός μου πρὸς τὸ ἐνταφιάσαι με ἐποίησεν.
In truth I tel you, wherever in al the world this gospel is proclaimed, what she has done will be toldas well, in remembrance of her.'13 ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ὅπου ἐὰν κηρυχθῇ τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦτο ἐν ὅλῳ τῷ κόσμῳ, λαληθήσεται καὶ ὃ ἐποίησεν αὕτη εἰς μνημόσυνον αὐτῆς.
Then one of the Twelve, the man cal ed Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests14 Τότε πορευθεὶς εἷς τῶν δώδεκα, ὁ λεγόμενος Ἰούδας Ἰσκαριώτης, πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς
and said, 'What are you prepared to give me if I hand him over to you?' They paid him thirty silverpieces,15 εἶπεν· τί θέλετέ μοι δοῦναι, κἀγὼ ὑμῖν παραδώσω αὐτόν; οἱ δὲ ἔστησαν αὐτῷ τριάκοντα ἀργύρια.
and from then onwards he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.16 καὶ ἀπὸ τότε ἐζήτει εὐκαιρίαν ἵνα αὐτὸν παραδῷ.
Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus to say, 'Where do you want usto make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?'17 Τῇ δὲ πρώτῃ τῶν ἀζύμων προσῆλθον οἱ μαθηταὶ τῷ Ἰησοῦ λέγοντες· ποῦ θέλεις ἑτοιμάσωμέν σοι φαγεῖν τὸ πάσχα;
He said, 'Go to a certain man in the city and say to him, "The Master says: My time is near. It is atyour house that I am keeping Passover with my disciples." '18 ὁ δὲ εἶπεν· ὑπάγετε εἰς τὴν πόλιν πρὸς τὸν δεῖνα καὶ εἴπατε αὐτῷ· ὁ διδάσκαλος λέγει· ὁ καιρός μου ἐγγύς ἐστιν, πρὸς σὲ ποιῶ τὸ πάσχα μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν μου.
The disciples did what Jesus told them and prepared the Passover.19 καὶ ἐποίησαν οἱ μαθηταὶ ὡς συνέταξεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἡτοίμασαν τὸ πάσχα.
When evening came he was at table with the Twelve.20 Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης ἀνέκειτο μετὰ τῶν δώδεκα.
And while they were eating he said, 'In truth I tell you, one of you is about to betray me.'21 καὶ ἐσθιόντων αὐτῶν εἶπεν· ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι εἷς ἐξ ὑμῶν παραδώσει με.
They were greatly distressed and started asking him in turn, 'Not me, Lord, surely?'22 καὶ λυπούμενοι σφόδρα ἤρξαντο λέγειν αὐτῷ εἷς ἕκαστος· μήτι ἐγώ εἰμι, κύριε;
He answered, 'Someone who has dipped his hand into the dish with me wil betray me.23 ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν· ὁ ἐμβάψας μετ’ ἐμοῦ τὴν χεῖρα ἐν τῷ τρυβλίῳ οὗτός με παραδώσει.
The Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whom theSon of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born!'24 ὁ μὲν υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ὑπάγει καθὼς γέγραπται περὶ αὐτοῦ, οὐαὶ δὲ τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ ἐκείνῳ δι’ οὗ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοται· καλὸν ἦν αὐτῷ εἰ οὐκ ἐγεννήθη ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖνος.
Judas, who was to betray him, asked in his turn, 'Not me, Rabbi, surely?' Jesus answered, 'It is youwho say it.'25 ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Ἰούδας ὁ παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν εἶπεν· μήτι ἐγώ εἰμι, ῥαββί; λέγει αὐτῷ· σὺ εἶπας.
Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gaveit to the disciples. 'Take it and eat,' he said, 'this is my body.'26 Ἐσθιόντων δὲ αὐτῶν λαβὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἄρτον καὶ εὐλογήσας ἔκλασεν καὶ δοὺς τοῖς μαθηταῖς εἶπεν· λάβετε φάγετε, τοῦτό ἐστιν τὸ σῶμά μου.
Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them saying, 'Drink from this, allof you,27 καὶ λαβὼν ποτήριον καὶ εὐχαριστήσας ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς λέγων· πίετε ἐξ αὐτοῦ πάντες,
for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.28 τοῦτο γάρ ἐστιν τὸ αἷμά μου τῆς διαθήκης τὸ περὶ πολλῶν ἐκχυννόμενον εἰς ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν.
From now on, I tel you, I shal never again drink wine until the day I drink the new wine with you inthe kingdom of my Father.'29 λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν, οὐ μὴ πίω ἀπ’ ἄρτι ἐκ τούτου τοῦ γενήματος τῆς ἀμπέλου ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης ὅταν αὐτὸ πίνω μεθ’ ὑμῶν καινὸν ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τοῦ πατρός μου.
After the psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.30 Καὶ ὑμνήσαντες ἐξῆλθον εἰς τὸ ὄρος τῶν ἐλαιῶν.
Then Jesus said to them, 'You wil al fall away from me tonight, for the scripture says: I shal strikethe shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered,31 Τότε λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· πάντες ὑμεῖς σκανδαλισθήσεσθε ἐν ἐμοὶ ἐν τῇ νυκτὶ ταύτῃ, γέγραπται γάρ·
πατάξω τὸν ποιμένα,
καὶ διασκορπισθήσονται τὰ πρόβατα τῆς ποίμνης.
but after my resurrection I shal go ahead of you to Galilee.'32 μετὰ δὲ τὸ ἐγερθῆναί με προάξω ὑμᾶς εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν.
At this, Peter said to him, 'Even if al fal away from you, I wil never fal away.'33 ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Πέτρος εἶπεν αὐτῷ· εἰ πάντες σκανδαλισθήσονται ἐν σοί, ἐγὼ οὐδέποτε σκανδαλισθήσομαι.
Jesus answered him, 'In truth I tel you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will have disownedme three times.'34 ἔφη αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· ἀμὴν λέγω σοι ὅτι ἐν ταύτῃ τῇ νυκτὶ πρὶν ἀλέκτορα φωνῆσαι τρὶς ἀπαρνήσῃ με.
Peter said to him, 'Even if I have to die with you, I wil never disown you.' And al the disciples saidthe same.35 λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Πέτρος· κἂν δέῃ με σὺν σοὶ ἀποθανεῖν, οὐ μή σε ἀπαρνήσομαι. ὁμοίως καὶ πάντες οἱ μαθηταὶ εἶπαν.
Then Jesus came with them to a plot of land called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, 'Stayhere while I go over there to pray.'36 Τότε ἔρχεται μετ’ αὐτῶν ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἰς χωρίον λεγόμενον Γεθσημανὶ καὶ λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς· καθίσατε αὐτοῦ ἕως [οὗ] ἀπελθὼν ἐκεῖ προσεύξωμαι.
He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him. And he began to feel sadness and anguish.37 καὶ παραλαβὼν τὸν Πέτρον καὶ τοὺς δύο υἱοὺς Ζεβεδαίου ἤρξατο λυπεῖσθαι καὶ ἀδημονεῖν.
Then he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point of death. Wait here and stay awake with me.'38 τότε λέγει αὐτοῖς· περίλυπός ἐστιν ἡ ψυχή μου ἕως θανάτου· μείνατε ὧδε καὶ γρηγορεῖτε μετ’ ἐμοῦ.
And going on a little further he fel on his face and prayed. 'My Father,' he said, 'if it is possible, letthis cup pass me by. Nevertheless, let it be as you, not I, would have it.'39 Καὶ προελθὼν μικρὸν ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ προσευχόμενος καὶ λέγων· πάτερ μου, εἰ δυνατόν ἐστιν, παρελθάτω ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ τὸ ποτήριον τοῦτο· πλὴν οὐχ ὡς ἐγὼ θέλω ἀλλ’ ὡς σύ.
He came back to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, 'So you had not thestrength to stay awake with me for one hour?40 καὶ ἔρχεται πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς καὶ εὑρίσκει αὐτοὺς καθεύδοντας, καὶ λέγει τῷ Πέτρῳ· οὕτως οὐκ ἰσχύσατε μίαν ὥραν γρηγορῆσαι μετ’ ἐμοῦ;
Stay awake, and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is willing enough, but human nature isweak.'41 γρηγορεῖτε καὶ προσεύχεσθε, ἵνα μὴ εἰσέλθητε εἰς πειρασμόν· τὸ μὲν πνεῦμα πρόθυμον ἡ δὲ σὰρξ ἀσθενής.
Again, a second time, he went away and prayed: 'My Father,' he said, 'if this cup cannot pass by, butI must drink it, your wil be done!'42 Πάλιν ἐκ δευτέρου ἀπελθὼν προσηύξατο λέγων· πάτερ μου, εἰ οὐ δύναται τοῦτο παρελθεῖν ἐὰν μὴ αὐτὸ πίω, γενηθήτω τὸ θέλημά σου.
And he came back again and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy.43 καὶ ἐλθὼν πάλιν εὗρεν αὐτοὺς καθεύδοντας, ἦσαν γὰρ αὐτῶν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ βεβαρημένοι.
Leaving them there, he went away again and prayed for the third time, repeating the same words.44 Καὶ ἀφεὶς αὐτοὺς πάλιν ἀπελθὼν προσηύξατο ἐκ τρίτου τὸν αὐτὸν λόγον εἰπὼν πάλιν.
Then he came back to the disciples and said to them, 'You can sleep on now and have your rest.Look, the hour has come when the Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.45 τότε ἔρχεται πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· καθεύδετε [τὸ] λοιπὸν καὶ ἀναπαύεσθε· ἰδοὺ ἤγγικεν ἡ ὥρα καὶ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοται εἰς χεῖρας ἁμαρτωλῶν.
Get up! Let us go! Look, my betrayer is not far away.'46 ἐγείρεσθε ἄγωμεν· ἰδοὺ ἤγγικεν ὁ παραδιδούς με.
And suddenly while he was stil speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared, and with him a largenumber of men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and elders of the people.47 Καὶ ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἰδοὺ Ἰούδας εἷς τῶν δώδεκα ἦλθεν καὶ μετ’ αὐτοῦ ὄχλος πολὺς μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων ἀπὸ τῶν ἀρχιερέων καὶ πρεσβυτέρων τοῦ λαοῦ.
Now the traitor had arranged a sign with them saying, 'The one I kiss, he is the man.
So he went up to Jesus at once and said, 'Greetings, Rabbi,' and kissed him.49 καὶ εὐθέως προσελθὼν τῷ Ἰησοῦ εἶπεν· χαῖρε, ῥαββί, καὶ κατεφίλησεν αὐτόν.
Jesus said to him, 'My friend, do what you are here for.' Then they came forward, seized Jesus andarrested him.50 ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ· ἑταῖρε, ἐφ’ ὃ πάρει. τότε προσελθόντες ἐπέβαλον τὰς χεῖρας ἐπὶ τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἐκράτησαν αὐτόν.
And suddenly, one of the fol owers of Jesus grasped his sword and drew it; he struck the high priest'sservant and cut off his ear.51 Καὶ ἰδοὺ εἷς τῶν μετὰ Ἰησοῦ ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα ἀπέσπασεν τὴν μάχαιραν αὐτοῦ καὶ πατάξας τὸν δοῦλον τοῦ ἀρχιερέως ἀφεῖλεν αὐτοῦ τὸ ὠτίον.
Jesus then said, 'Put your sword back, for al who draw the sword wil die by the sword.52 τότε λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· ἀπόστρεψον τὴν μάχαιράν σου εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτῆς· πάντες γὰρ οἱ λαβόντες μάχαιραν ἐν μαχαίρῃ ἀπολοῦνται.
Or do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, who would promptly send more than twelvelegions of angels to my defence?53 ἢ δοκεῖς ὅτι οὐ δύναμαι παρακαλέσαι τὸν πατέρα μου, καὶ παραστήσει μοι ἄρτι πλείω δώδεκα λεγιῶνας ἀγγέλων;
But then, how would the scriptures be fulfil ed that say this is the way it must be?'54 πῶς οὖν πληρωθῶσιν αἱ γραφαὶ ὅτι οὕτως δεῖ γενέσθαι;
It was at this time that Jesus said to the crowds, 'Am I a bandit, that you had to set out to capture mewith swords and clubs? I sat teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid a hand on me.'55 Ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ὥρᾳ εἶπεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τοῖς ὄχλοις· ὡς ἐπὶ λῃστὴν ἐξήλθατε μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων συλλαβεῖν με; καθ’ ἡμέραν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἐκαθεζόμην διδάσκων καὶ οὐκ ἐκρατήσατέ με.
Now al this happened to fulfil the prophecies in scripture. Then al the disciples deserted him and ranaway.56 τοῦτο δὲ ὅλον γέγονεν ἵνα πληρωθῶσιν αἱ γραφαὶ τῶν προφητῶν. Τότε οἱ μαθηταὶ πάντες ἀφέντες αὐτὸν ἔφυγον.
The men who had arrested Jesus led him off to the house of Caiaphas the high priest, where thescribes and the elders were assembled.57 Οἱ δὲ κρατήσαντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπήγαγον πρὸς Καϊάφαν τὸν ἀρχιερέα, ὅπου οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι συνήχθησαν.
Peter followed him at a distance right to the high priest's palace, and he went in and sat down withthe attendants to see what the end would be.58 ὁ δὲ Πέτρος ἠκολούθει αὐτῷ ἀπὸ μακρόθεν ἕως τῆς αὐλῆς τοῦ ἀρχιερέως καὶ εἰσελθὼν ἔσω ἐκάθητο μετὰ τῶν ὑπηρετῶν ἰδεῖν τὸ τέλος.
The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus, however false,on which they might have him executed.59 Οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ τὸ συνέδριον ὅλον ἐζήτουν ψευδομαρτυρίαν κατὰ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ὅπως αὐτὸν θανατώσωσιν,
But they could not find any, though several lying witnesses came forward. Eventually two cameforward60 καὶ οὐχ εὗρον πολλῶν προσελθόντων ψευδομαρτύρων. ὕστερον δὲ προσελθόντες δύο
and made a statement, 'This man said, "I have power to destroy the Temple of God and in three daysbuild it up." '61 εἶπαν· οὗτος ἔφη· δύναμαι καταλῦσαι τὸν ναὸν τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ διὰ τριῶν ἡμερῶν οἰκοδομῆσαι.
The high priest then rose and said to him, 'Have you no answer to that? What is this evidence thesemen are bringing against you?'62 καὶ ἀναστὰς ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς εἶπεν αὐτῷ· οὐδὲν ἀποκρίνῃ τί οὗτοί σου καταμαρτυροῦσιν;
But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, 'I put you on oath by the living God to tel us ifyou are the Christ, the Son of God.'63 ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἐσιώπα.
Jesus answered him, 'It is you who say it. But, I tel you that from this time onward you wil see theSon of man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.'64 λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· σὺ εἶπας.
Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, 'He has blasphemed. What need of witnesses have wenow? There! You have just heard the blasphemy.65 Τότε ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς διέρρηξεν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ λέγων· ἐβλασφήμησεν· τί ἔτι χρείαν ἔχομεν μαρτύρων; ἴδε νῦν ἠκούσατε τὴν βλασφημίαν·
What is your opinion?' They answered, 'He deserves to die.'66 τί ὑμῖν δοκεῖ; οἱ δὲ ἀποκριθέντες εἶπαν· ἔνοχος θανάτου ἐστίν.
Then they spat in his face and hit him with their fists; others said as they struck him,67 Τότε ἐνέπτυσαν εἰς τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκολάφισαν αὐτόν, οἱ δὲ ἐράπισαν
'Prophesy to us, Christ! Who hit you then?'68 λέγοντες· προφήτευσον ἡμῖν, χριστέ, τίς ἐστιν ὁ παίσας σε;
Meanwhile Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came up to him saying, 'You,too, were with Jesus the Galilean.'69 Ὁ δὲ Πέτρος ἐκάθητο ἔξω ἐν τῇ αὐλῇ· καὶ προσῆλθεν αὐτῷ μία παιδίσκη λέγουσα· καὶ σὺ ἦσθα μετὰ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ Γαλιλαίου.
But he denied it in front of them al . 'I do not know what you are talking about,' he said.70 ὁ δὲ ἠρνήσατο ἔμπροσθεν πάντων λέγων· οὐκ οἶδα τί λέγεις.
When he went out to the gateway another servant-girl saw him and said to the people there, 'Thisman was with Jesus the Nazarene.'71 Ἐξελθόντα δὲ εἰς τὸν πυλῶνα εἶδεν αὐτὸν ἄλλη καὶ λέγει τοῖς ἐκεῖ· οὗτος ἦν μετὰ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ Ναζωραίου.
And again, with an oath, he denied it, 'I do not know the man.'72 καὶ πάλιν ἠρνήσατο μετὰ ὅρκου ὅτι οὐκ οἶδα τὸν ἄνθρωπον.
A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, 'You are certainly one of them too!
Then he started cursing and swearing, 'I do not know the man.' And at once the cock crowed,74 τότε ἤρξατο καταθεματίζειν καὶ ὀμνύειν ὅτι οὐκ οἶδα τὸν ἄνθρωπον. καὶ εὐθέως ἀλέκτωρ ἐφώνησεν.
and Peter remembered what Jesus had said, 'Before the cock crows you wil have disowned methree times.' And he went outside and wept bitterly.75 καὶ ἐμνήσθη ὁ Πέτρος τοῦ ῥήματος Ἰησοῦ εἰρηκότος ὅτι πρὶν ἀλέκτορα φωνῆσαι τρὶς ἀπαρνήσῃ με· καὶ ἐξελθὼν ἔξω ἔκλαυσεν πικρῶς.
