Job 41

NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Any hope you might have would be futile, the mere sight of him would overwhelm you.1 Whoever might vainly hope to do so need only see him to be overthrown.
When roused, he grows ferocious, who could ever stand up to him?2 Is he not relentless when aroused; who then dares stand before him?
Who has ever attacked him with impunity? No one beneath al heaven!3 Who has assailed him and come off safe-- Who under all the heavens?
Next I wil talk of his limbs and describe his matchless strength-4 I need hardly mention his limbs, his strength, and the fitness of his armor.
who can undo the front of his tunic or pierce the double armour of his breastplate?5 Who can strip off his outer garment, or penetrate his double corselet?
Who dare open the gates of his mouth? Terror reigns round his teeth!6 Who can force open the doors of his mouth, close to his terrible teeth?
His back is like rows of shields, sealed with a stone seal,7 Rows of scales are on his back, tightly sealed together;
touching each other so close that no breath could pass between,8 They are fitted each so close to the next that no space intervenes;
sticking to one another making an impervious whole.9 So joined one to another that they hold fast and cannot be parted.
His sneezes radiate light, his eyes are like the eyelashes of the dawn.10 When he sneezes, light flashes forth; his eyes are like those of the dawn.
From his mouth come fiery torches, sparks of fire fly out of it.11 Out of his mouth go forth firebrands; sparks of fire leap forth.
His nostrils belch smoke like a cauldron boiling on the fire.12 From his nostrils issues steam, as from a seething pot or bowl.
His breath could kindle coals, flame issues from his mouth.13 His breath sets coals afire; a flame pours from his mouth.
His strength resides in his neck, violence leaps before him as he goes.14 Strength abides in his neck, and terror leaps before him.
The strips of his flesh are jointed together, firmly set in and immovable.
His heart is as hard as rock unyielding as the lower mil stone.16 His heart is hard as stone; his flesh, as the lower millstone.
When he stands up, the waves take fright and the bil ows of the sea retreat.17 When he rises up, the mighty are afraid; the waves of the sea fall back.
Sword may strike but will not stick in him, no more will spear, javelin or lance.18 Should the sword reach him, it will not avail; nor will the spear, nor the dart, nor the javelin.
Iron means no more to him than straw, nor bronze than rotten wood.19 He regards iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood.
No arrow can make him flee, a sling-stone tickles him like hay.20 The arrow will not put him to flight; slingstones used against him are but straws.
Club seems to him like straw, he laughs at the whirring javelin.21 Clubs he esteems as splinters; he laughs at the crash of the spear.
He has sharp potsherds underneath, and moves across the slime like a harrow.22 His belly is sharp as pottery fragments; he spreads like a threshing sledge upon the mire.
He makes the depths seethe like a cauldron, he makes the sea fume like a scent burner.23 He makes the depths boil like a pot; the sea he churns like perfume in a kettle.
Behind him he leaves a glittering wake -- a white fleece seems to float on the deeps.24 Behind him he leaves a shining path; you would think the deep had the hoary head of age.
He has no equal on earth, being created without fear.25 Upon the earth there is not his like, intrepid he was made.
He looks the haughtiest in the eye; of al the lordly beasts he is king.26 All, however lofty, fear him; he is king over all proud beasts.
