1 Any hope you might have would be futile, the mere sight of him would overwhelm you.	1 Ecco, davanti a lui ogni sicurezza viene meno, al solo vederlo si resta abbattuti.
2 When roused, he grows ferocious, who could ever stand up to him?	2 Nessuno è tanto audace da poterlo sfidare: chi mai può resistergli?
3 Who has ever attacked him with impunity? No one beneath al heaven!	3 Chi mai lo ha assalito e ne è uscito illeso? Nessuno sotto ogni cielo.
4 Next I wil talk of his limbs and describe his matchless strength-	4 Non passerò sotto silenzio la forza delle sue membra, né la sua potenza né la sua imponente struttura.
5 who can undo the front of his tunic or pierce the double armour of his breastplate?	5 Chi mai ha aperto il suo manto di pelle e nella sua doppia corazza chi è penetrato?
6 Who dare open the gates of his mouth? Terror reigns round his teeth!	6 Chi mai ha aperto i battenti della sua bocca, attorno ai suoi denti terrificanti?
7 His back is like rows of shields, sealed with a stone seal,	7 Il suo dorso è formato da file di squame, saldate con tenace suggello:
8 touching each other so close that no breath could pass between,	8 l’una è così unita con l’altra che l’aria fra di esse non passa;
9 sticking to one another making an impervious whole.	9 ciascuna aderisce a quella vicina, sono compatte e non possono staccarsi.
10 His sneezes radiate light, his eyes are like the eyelashes of the dawn.	10 Il suo starnuto irradia luce, i suoi occhi sono come le palpebre dell’aurora.
11 From his mouth come fiery torches, sparks of fire fly out of it.	11 Dalla sua bocca erompono vampate, sprizzano scintille di fuoco.
12 His nostrils belch smoke like a cauldron boiling on the fire.	12 Dalle sue narici esce fumo come da caldaia infuocata e bollente.
13 His breath could kindle coals, flame issues from his mouth.	13 Il suo fiato incendia carboni e dalla bocca gli escono fiamme.
14 His strength resides in his neck, violence leaps before him as he goes.	14 Nel suo collo risiede la forza e innanzi a lui corre il terrore.
15 The strips of his flesh are jointed together, firmly set in and immovable.	15 Compatta è la massa della sua carne, ben salda su di lui e non si muove.
16 His heart is as hard as rock unyielding as the lower mil stone.	16 Il suo cuore è duro come pietra, duro come la macina inferiore.
17 When he stands up, the waves take fright and the bil ows of the sea retreat.	17 Quando si alza si spaventano gli dèi e per il terrore restano smarriti.
18 Sword may strike but will not stick in him, no more will spear, javelin or lance.	18 La spada che lo affronta non penetra, né lancia né freccia né dardo.
19 Iron means no more to him than straw, nor bronze than rotten wood.	19 Il ferro per lui è come paglia, il bronzo come legno tarlato.
20 No arrow can make him flee, a sling-stone tickles him like hay.	20 Non lo mette in fuga la freccia, per lui le pietre della fionda sono come stoppia.
21 Club seems to him like straw, he laughs at the whirring javelin.	21 Come stoppia è la mazza per lui e si fa beffe del sibilo del giavellotto.
22 He has sharp potsherds underneath, and moves across the slime like a harrow.	22 La sua pancia è fatta di cocci aguzzi e striscia sul fango come trebbia.
23 He makes the depths seethe like a cauldron, he makes the sea fume like a scent burner.	23 Fa ribollire come pentola il fondo marino, fa gorgogliare il mare come un vaso caldo di unguenti.
24 Behind him he leaves a glittering wake -- a white fleece seems to float on the deeps.	24 Dietro di sé produce una scia lucente e l’abisso appare canuto.
25 He has no equal on earth, being created without fear.	25 Nessuno sulla terra è pari a lui, creato per non aver paura.
26 He looks the haughtiest in the eye; of al the lordly beasts he is king.	26 Egli domina tutto ciò che superbo s’innalza, è sovrano su tutte le bestie feroci».
