NEW AMERICAN BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
A plaintive song of David, which he sang to the LORD concerning Cush, the Benjaminite.1 [Lament Of David Which he sang to Yahweh about Cush the Benjaminite] Yahweh my God, I takerefuge in you, save me from al my pursuers and rescue me,
LORD my God, in you I take refuge; rescue me; save me from all who pursue me,2 or he wil savage me like a lion, carry me off with no one to rescue me.
Lest they maul me like lions, tear me to pieces with none to save.3 Yahweh my God, if I have done this: if injustice has stained my hands,
LORD my God, if I am at fault in this, if there is guilt on my hands,4 if I have repaid my al y with treachery or spared one who attacked me unprovoked,
If I have repaid my friend with evil-- I spared even those who hated me without cause--5 may an enemy hunt me down and catch me, may he trample my life into the ground and crush my vitalparts into the dust.Pause
Then let my enemy pursue and overtake me, trample my life to the ground, and leave me dishonored in the dust.Selah6 Arise, Yahweh, in your anger, rise up against the arrogance of my foes. Awake, my God, you demandjudgement.
Rise up, LORD, in your anger; rise against the fury of my foes. Wake to judge as you have decreed.7 Let the assembly of nations gather round you; return above it on high!
Have the assembly of the peoples gather about you; sit on your throne high above them,8 (Yahweh judges the nations.) Judge me, Yahweh, as my uprightness and my integrity deserve.
O LORD, judge of the nations. Grant me justice, LORD, for I am blameless, free of any guilt.9 Put an end to the malice of the wicked, make the upright stand firm, you who discern hearts and minds,God the upright.
Bring the malice of the wicked to an end; uphold the innocent, O God of justice, who tries hearts and minds.10 God is a shield that protects me, saving the honest of heart.
A shield before me is God who saves the honest heart.11 God is an upright judge, slow to anger, but a God at al times threatening
God is a just judge, who rebukes in anger every day.12 for those who wil not repent. Let the enemy whet his sword, draw his bow and make ready;
If sinners do not repent, God sharpens his sword, strings and readies the bow,13 but he is making ready instruments of death for himself and tipping his arrows with fire;
Prepares his deadly shafts, makes arrows blazing thunderbolts.14 look at him: pregnant with malice, conceiving spite, he gives birth to treachery.
Sinners conceive iniquity; pregnant with mischief, they give birth to failure.15 He digs a trap, scoops it out, but he fal s into the snare he made himself.
They open a hole and dig it deep, but fall into the pit they have dug.16 His spite recoils on his own head, his brutality falls back on his own skul .
Their mischief comes back upon themselves; their violence falls on their own heads.17 I thank Yahweh for his saving justice. I sing to the name of the Most High.
I praise the justice of the LORD; I celebrate the name of the LORD Most High.
