De temporibus autem, et momentis, fratres, non indigetis ut scribamus vobis.1 About times and dates, brothers, there is no need to write to you
Ipsi enim diligenter scitis quia dies Domini, sicut fur in nocte, ita veniet :2 for you are wel aware in any case that the Day of the Lord is going to come like a thief in the night.
cum enim dixerint : Pax et securitas : tunc repentinus eis superveniet interitus, sicut dolor in utero habenti, et non effugient.3 It is when people are saying, 'How quiet and peaceful it is' that sudden destruction fal s on them, assuddenly as labour pains come on a pregnant woman; and there is no escape.
Vos autem, fratres, non estis in tenebris, ut vos dies illa tamquam fur comprehendat :4 But you, brothers, do not live in the dark, that the Day should take you unawares like a thief.
omnes enim vos filii lucis estis, et filii diei : non sumus noctis, neque tenebrarum.5 No, you are al children of light and children of the day: we do not belong to the night or to darkness,
Igitur non dormiamus sicut et ceteri, sed vigilemus, et sobrii simus.6 so we should not go on sleeping, as everyone else does, but stay wide awake and sober.
Qui enim dormiunt, nocte dormiunt : et qui ebrii sunt, nocte ebrii sunt.7 Night is the time for sleepers to sleep and night the time for drunkards to be drunk,
Nos autem, qui diei sumus, sobrii simus, induti loricam fidei et caritatis, et galeam spem salutis :8 but we belong to the day and we should be sober; let us put on faith and love for a breastplate, and thehope of salvation for a helmet.
quoniam non posuit nos Deus in iram, sed in acquisitionem salutis per Dominum nostrum Jesum Christum,9 God destined us not for his retribution, but to win salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
qui mortuus est pro nobis : ut sive vigilemus, sive dormiamus, simul cum illo vivamus.10 who died for us so that, awake or asleep, we should stil live united to him.
Propter quod consolamini invicem, et ædificate alterutrum, sicut et facitis.
So give encouragement to each other, and keep strengthening one another, as you do already.
Rogamus autem vos, fratres, ut noveritis eos qui laborant inter vos, et præsunt vobis in Domino, et monent vos,12 We appeal to you, my brothers, to be considerate to those who work so hard among you as yourleaders in the Lord and those who admonish you.
ut habeatis illos abundantius in caritate propter opus illorum : pacem habete cum eis.13 Have the greatest respect and affection for them because of their work. Be at peace amongyourselves.
Rogamus autem vos, fratres, corripite inquietos, consolamini pusillanimes, suscipite infirmos, patientes estote ad omnes.14 We urge you, brothers, to admonish those who are undisciplined, encourage the apprehensive,support the weak and be patient with everyone.
Videte ne quis malum pro malo alicui reddat : sed semper quod bonum est sectamini in invicem, et in omnes.15 Make sure that people do not try to repay evil for evil; always aim at what is best for each other and foreveryone.
Semper gaudete.16 Always be joyful;
Sine intermissione orate.17 pray constantly;
In omnibus gratias agite : hæc est enim voluntas Dei in Christo Jesu in omnibus vobis.18 and for al things give thanks; this is the wil of God for you in Christ Jesus.
Spiritum nolite extinguere.19 Do not stifle the Spirit
Prophetias nolite spernere.20 or despise the gift of prophecy with contempt;
Omnia autem probate : quod bonum est tenete.21 test everything and hold on to what is good
Ab omni specie mala abstinete vos.22 and shun every form of evil.
Ipse autem Deus pacis sanctificet vos per omnia : ut integer spiritus vester, et anima, et corpus sine querela in adventu Domini nostri Jesu Christi servetur.23 May the God of peace make you perfect and holy; and may your spirit, life and body be keptblameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Fidelis est, qui vocavit vos : qui etiam faciet.
He who has cal ed you is trustworthy and wil carry it out.
Fratres, orate pro nobis.25 Pray for us, my brothers.
Salutate fratres omnes in osculo sancto.26 Greet al the brothers with a holy kiss.
Adjuro vos per Dominum ut legatur epistola hæc omnibus sanctis fratribus.27 My orders, in the Lord's name, are that this letter is to be read to al the brothers.
Gratia Domini nostri Jesu Christi vobiscum. Amen.28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.2Th 1:1 Paul, Silvanus and Timothy, to the Church in Thessalonica which is in God our Father and the LordJesus Christ
