NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
The word of Yahweh came to Jehu son of Hanani against Baasha:
“ Pro eo quod exaltavi te de pulvere et posui te ducem super populum meum Israel, tu autem ambulasti in via Ieroboam et peccare fecisti populum meum Israel, ut me irritares in peccatis eorum,2 'I raised you from the dust and made you leader of my people Israel, but you have fol owed Jeroboam'sexample and led my people Israel into sins which provoke my anger.
ecce ego demetam posteriora Baasa et posteriora domus eius et faciam domum tuam sicut domum Ieroboam filii Nabat.3 Now I shal sweep away Baasha and his House; I shal make your House like the House of Jeroboamson of Nebat.
Those of Baasha's family who die in the city, the dogs wil eat; and those who die in the open country, the birds of the air wil eat.'
The rest of the history of Baasha, his career, his valour, is this not recorded in the Book of the Annalsof the Kings of Israel?
When Baasha fel asleep with his ancestors, he was buried in Tirzah; his son Elah succeeded him.
Furthermore, the word of Yahweh was delivered through the prophet Jehu son of Hanani againstBaasha and his House, first because of the many ways in which he had displeased Yahweh, provoking him toanger by his actions and becoming like the House of Jeroboam; secondly because he had destroyed that House.
Anno vicesimo sexto Asa regis Iudae regnavit Ela filius Baasa super Israel in Thersa duobus annis.8 In the twenty-sixth year of Asa king of Judah, Elah son of Baasha became king of Israel at Tirzah, fortwo years.
Et rebellavit contra eum servus suus Zamri dux mediae partis curruum. Erat autem Ela in Thersa bibens et temulentus in domo Arsa praefecti domus in Thersa;9 Zimri, one of his officers, captain of half his chariotry, plotted against him. While he was at Tirzah, drinking himself senseless in the house of Arza who was master of the palace in Tirzah,
irruens ergo Zamri percussit et occidit eum anno vicesimo septimo Asa regis Iudae et regnavit pro eo.10 Zimri came in, struck him down and kil ed him in the twenty-seventh year of Asa king of Judah, andsucceeded him.
On his accession, as soon as he was seated on the throne, he butchered Baasha's entire family, notleaving him one manjack of them alive, neither relative nor friend.
Delevitque Zamri omnem domum Baasa iuxta verbum Domini, quod locutus fuerat ad Baasa in manu Iehu prophetae,12 Zimri destroyed the whole House of Baasha, in accordance with the word which Yahweh had spokenagainst Baasha through the prophet Jehu,
because of all the sins of Baasha and his son Elah into which they had led Israel, provoking the angerof Yahweh, God of Israel, with their worthless idols.
The history of Elah, his entire career, is this not recorded in the Book of the Annals of the Kings ofIsrael?
Anno vicesimo septimo Asa regis Iudae regnavit Zamri septem diebus in Thersa. Porro exercitus obsidebat Gebbethon urbem Philisthinorum.15 In the twenty-seventh year of Asa king of Judah, Zimri became king for seven days, at Tirzah. Thepeople were then encamped in front of Gibbethon, a Philistine town.
Cumque audisset rebellasse Zamri et occidisse regem, fecit sibi regem omnis Israel Amri, qui erat princeps militiae super Israel in die illa in castris.16 When news reached the camp of how Zimri had not only plotted against but actual y killed the king, alIsrael proclaimed the army commander Omri as king of Israel in the camp that very day.
Ascendit ergo Amri et omnis Israel cum eo de Gebbethon, et obsidebant Thersa;17 Omri, and all Israel with him, raised the siege of Gibbethon and laid siege to Tirzah.
When Zimri saw that the town had been captured, he went into the keep of the royal palace, burnedthe palace over his own head, and died.
This was because of the sin which he had committed in doing what is displeasing to Yahweh, bycopying the example of Jeroboam and the sin into which he had led Israel.
The rest of the history of Zimri and of his conspiracy, is this not recorded in the Book of the Annals ofthe Kings of Israel?
Tunc divisus est populus Israel in duas partes: media pars populi sequebatur Thebni filium Gineth, ut constitueret eum regem, et media pars Amri.21 The people of Israel then split into two factions: one half fol owing Tibni son of Ginath to make himking, the other half fol owing Omri.
But the faction of Omri proved stronger than that of Tibni son of Ginath; thus Tibni lost his life andOmri became king.
Anno tricesimo primo Asa regis Iudae regnavit Amri super Israel duodecim annis; in Thersa regnavit sex annis.23 In the thirty-first year of Asa king of Judah, Omri became king of Israel and reigned for twelve years. He reigned for six years at Tirzah.
Emitque montem Samariae a Somer duobus talentis argenti et aedificavit eum et vocavit nomen civitatis, quam exstruxerat, nomine Somer domini montis Samariae.24 Then for two talents of silver he bought the hil of Samaria from Shemer and on it built a town whichhe named Samaria after Shemer who had owned the hil .
Fecit autem Amri malum in conspectu Domini et operatus est nequiter super omnes, qui fuerunt ante eum;25 Omri did what is displeasing to Yahweh, and was worse than al his predecessors.
ambulavitque in omni via Ieroboam filii Nabat et in peccato eius, quo peccare fecerat Israel, ut irritaret Dominum, Deum Israel, in vanitatibus suis.
In every way he copied the example of Jeroboam son of Nebat and the sins into which he had ledIsrael, provoking the anger of Yahweh, God of Israel, with their worthless idols.
The rest of the history of Omri, his career, his valour, is this not recorded in the Book of the Annals ofthe Kings of Israel?
When Omri fel asleep with his ancestors, he was buried in Samaria; his son Ahab succeeded him.
Achab vero filius Amri regnavit super Israel anno tricesimo octavo Asa regis Iudae; et regnavit Achab filius Amri super Israel in Samaria viginti et duobus annis.29 Ahab son of Omri became king of Israel in the thirty-eighth year of Asa king of Judah, and reignedover Israel for twenty-two years in Samaria.
Et fecit Achab filius Amri malum in conspectu Domini super omnes, qui fuerunt ante eum.30 Ahab son of Omri did what is displeasing to Yahweh, and was worse than al his predecessors.
Nec suffecit ei, ut ambularet in peccatis Ieroboam filii Nabat; insuper duxit uxorem Iezabel filiam Ethbaal regis Sidoniorum et abiit et servivit Baal et adoravit eum.31 The least that he did was to fol ow the sinful example of Jeroboam son of Nebat: he married Jezebeldaughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians, and then proceeded to serve Baal and worship him.
Et posuit aram Baal in templo Baal, quod aedificaverat in Samaria,32 He erected an altar to him in the temple of Baal which he built in Samaria.
et fecit Achab palum. Et addidit Achab in opere suo irritans Dominum, Deum Israel, super omnes reges Israel, qui fuerant ante eum.33 Ahab also put up a sacred pole and committed other crimes as well, provoking the anger of Yahweh,God of Israel, more than all the kings of Israel his predecessors.
It was in his time that Hiel of Bethel rebuilt Jericho. Laying its foundations cost him his eldest sonAbiram and erecting its gates cost him his youngest son Segub, just as Yahweh had foretold through Joshua sonof Nun.
