NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Igitur in octavo decimo anno regni Ieroboam filii Nabat regnavit Abiam super Iudam.1 In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam son of Nebat, Abijam became king of Judah
Tribus annis regnavit in Ierusalem; nomen matris eius Maacha filia Abessalom.2 and reigned for three years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Maacah descendant of Absalom.
In everything he fol owed the sinful example of his father before him; his heart was not wholly withYahweh his God, as the heart of David his ancestor had been.
Sed propter David dedit ei Dominus Deus suus lucernam in Ierusalem, ut suscitaret filium eius post eum et statueret Ierusalem;4 However, for David's sake, Yahweh his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, with a son to succeed him,so keeping Jerusalem secure;
eo quod fecisset David rectum in oculis Domini et non declinasset ab omnibus, quae praeceperat ei, cunctis diebus vitae suae, excepta re Uriae Hetthaei.5 for David had done what Yahweh regarded as right and had never in all his life disobeyed whatever hecommanded him (except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite).

Fuitque bellum inter Abiam et inter Ieroboam.7 The rest of the history of Abijam, his entire career, is this not recorded in the Book of the Annals of theKings of Judah? Abijam and Jeroboam made war on each other.
When Abijam fel asleep with his ancestors, he was buried in the City of David; his son Asa succeededhim.
In anno ergo vicesimo Ieroboam regis Israel regnavit Asa rex Iudae9 In the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa became king of Judah
et quadraginta et uno anno regnavit in Ierusalem. Nomen matris eius Maacha filia Abessalom.
and reigned for forty-one years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Maacah descendant ofAbsalom.
Et fecit Asa rectum ante conspectum Domini sicut David pater eius.11 Asa did what Yahweh regards as right, as his ancestor David had done.
He drove the male prostitutes out of the country and got rid of all the idols which his ancestors hadmade.
Insuper et Maacham matrem suam amovit, ne esset domina, eo quod fecisset abominationem Aserae; confregitque Asa simulacrum turpissimum et combussit in torrente Cedron.13 He even deprived his grandmother Maacah of the dignity of Great Lady for having made an obscenityfor Asherah; Asa cut down her obscenity and burnt it in the ravine of the Kidron.
Excelsa autem non abstulit; verumtamen cor Asa perfectum erat coram Domino cunctis diebus suis.14 Though the high places were not abolished, Asa's heart was loyal to Yahweh throughout his life.
He deposited his father's and his own dedicated gifts of silver, gold and sacred vessels in the Templeof Yahweh.
Bellum autem erat inter Asa et Baasa regem lsrael cunctis diebus eorum.16 Asa and Baasha king of Israel were at war with each other throughout their reigns.
Ascendit quoque Baasa rex Israel in Iudam et aedificavit Rama, ut non posset quispiam egredi vel ingredi de parte Asa regis Iudae.17 Baasha king of Israel marched on Judah and fortified Ramah to blockade Asa king of Judah.
Tollens itaque Asa omne argentum et aurum, quod remanserat in thesauris domus Domini et in thesauris domus regiae, dedit illud in manu servorum suorum et misit ad Benadad filium Tabremmon filii Hezion regem Syriae, qui habitabat in Damasco, dicens:18 Asa then took al the remaining silver and gold left in the treasuries of the Temple of Yahweh and theroyal palace. Entrusting this to his servants, King Asa sent them with the fol owing message to Ben-Hadad sonof Tabrimmon, son of Hezion, the king of Aram who lived in Damascus,
“ Foedus est inter me et te et inter patrem meum et patrem tuum; ideo misi tibi munera, argentum et aurum, et peto, ut irritum facias foedus, quod habes cum Baasa rege Israel, et recedat a me ”.19 'Let us make an al iance between myself and yourself, between my father and your father! Look, Ihave sent you a gift of silver and gold. Come, break off your al iance with Baasha king of Israel, which wil makehim withdraw from me.'
Acquiescens Benadad regi Asa misit principes exercituum suorum in civitates Israel, et percusserunt Ahion et Dan et Abelbethmaacha et universam Chenereth cum omni terra Nephthali.20 Ben-Hadad listened favourably to King Asa, and sent the generals of his armies to attack the towns ofIsrael; he ravaged Ijon, Dan, Abel-Beth-Maacah, al Chinneroth, and the whole territory of Naphtali.
Quod cum audisset Baasa, cessavit aedificare Rama et reversus est in Thersa.21 When Baasha heard this he gave up fortifying Ramah and retired to Tirzah.
King Asa then summoned al Judah, no one was exempt; they took away the stones and timber withwhich Baasha had been fortifying Ramah, and King Asa used them to fortify Geba of Benjamin and Mizpah.
Verumtamen in tempore senectutis suae doluit pedes;23 The rest of the history of Asa, al his valour, his entire career, is this not recorded in the Book of theAnnals of the Kings of Judah? In his old age, however, he contracted a disease of his feet.
When Asa fell asleep with his ancestors, he was buried with his ancestors in the City of his ancestorDavid; his son Jehoshaphat succeeded him.
Nadab vero filius Ieroboam regnavit super Israel anno secundo Asa regis Iudae; regnavitque super Israel duobus annis.25 Nadab son of Jeroboam became king of Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and hereigned over Israel for two years.
He did what is displeasing to Yahweh; he copied his father's example and the sin into which he hadled Israel.
Insidiatus est autem ei Baasa filius Ahiae de domo Issachar et percussit eum in Gebbethon, quae est urbs Philisthinorum; siquidem Nadab et omnis Israel obsidebant Gebbethon.27 Baasha son of Ahijah, of the House of Issachar, plotted against him and murdered him at Gibbethon,a Philistine town which Nadab and all Israel were besieging.
Interfecit igitur illum Baasa in anno tertio Asa regis Iudae et regnavit pro eo.28 Baasha kil ed Nadab and succeeded him in the third year of Asa king of Judah.
Cumque regnasset, percussit omnem domum Ieroboam; non dimisit ne unam quidem animam de semine eius, donec deleret eam iuxta verbum Domini, quod locutus fuerat in manu servi sui Ahiae Silonitis29 No sooner was he king than he butchered the entire House of Jeroboam, not sparing a soul, and putan end to it, just as Yahweh had foretold through his servant Ahijah of Shiloh,
because of the sins which he had committed and into which he had led Israel, and because he hadprovoked the anger of Yahweh, God of Israel.
The rest of the history of Nadab, his entire career, is this not recorded in
the Book of the Annals of the Kings of Israel?
Anno tertio Asa regis Iudae regnavit Baasa filius Ahiae super omnem Israel in Thersa viginti quattuor annis;33 In the third year of Asa king of Judah, Baasha son of Ahijah became king of Israel at Tirzah fortwenty-four years.
He did what is displeasing to Yahweh; he copied the example of Jeroboam and the sin into which hehad led Israel.
