1 Annunzio grave rivelato ad Habacuc profeta.	1 The oracle which Habakkuk the prophet received in vision.
2 Fino a quando, o Signore, griderò io, e tu non mi esaudirai? I getterò alte strida per le violenze, ch'io patisco, e tu non darai salute?	2 How long, O LORD? I cry for help but you do not listen! I cry out to you, "Violence!" but you do not intervene.
3 Perchè mi fai tu vedere dinanzi a me iniquità, e dolori, rapine, e ingiustizie? E i contenziosi, e rissosi prevalgono.	3 Why do you let me see ruin; why must I look at misery? Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and clamorous discord.
4 Per questo è straziata la legge, e non arriva al suo fine il giudizio; perocché l'empio ne può più, che il giusto; per questo i giudizj sono corrotti.	4 This is why the law is benumbed, and judgment is never rendered: Because the wicked circumvent the just; this is why judgment comes forth perverted.
5 Gettate gli occhi sopra le genti, e osservate: resterete ammirati, e stupefatti; perocché è avvenuta una cosa a' vostri giorni, la quale da nissuno sarà creduta, quando si annunzierà;	5 Look over the nations and see, and be utterly amazed! For a work is being done in your days that you would not have believed, were it told.
6 Perocché ecco che io farò muoversi i Caldei, gente cruda, e agile, che scorre tutta quanta la terra, per occupare le case altrui.	6 For see, I am raising up Chaldea, that bitter and unruly people, That marches the breadth of the land to take dwellings not his own.
7 Ella è orribile, e tremenda: ella da se stessa semenziera, e gastigherà.	7 Terrible and dreadful is he, from himself derive his law and his majesty.
8 I suoi cavalli son più leggeri dei pardi, e più veloci, che i lupi sul far della notte; e i suoi cavalli si spanderanno per ogni parte; i suoi cavalieri verranno da lungi, voleranno com' aquila a far suo pasto.	8 Swifter than leopards are his horses, and keener than wolves at evening. His horses prance, his horsemen come from afar: They fly like the eagle hastening to devour;
9 Verranno tutti al bottino: la loro presenza è un vento, che arde: e metteranno insieme gli schiavi come l'arena.	9 each comes for the rapine, Their combined onset is that of a stormwind that heaps up captives like sand.
10 E quegli trionferà dei regi, e si farà beffe de' potentati: egli si burlerà di tutte le fortezze, e alzerà la trincierà, e le espugnerà.	10 He scoffs at kings, and princes are his laughingstock; He laughs at any fortress, heaps up a ramp, and conquers it.
11 Allora si cangerà il suo spirito, e svanirà, e caderà: tale è la possanza di quel suo Dio.	11 Then he veers like the wind and is gone-- this culprit who makes his own strength his god!
12 Ma non se' tu fin da principio, o Signore Dio mio, mio Santo, e noi non morremo? Signore tu hai destinato costui a far vendetta, e per correzione nostra lo hai fondato in possanza.	12 Are you not from eternity, O LORD, my holy God, immortal? O LORD you have marked him for judgment, O Rock , you have readied him for punishment!
13 Gli occhi tuoi son mondi, né tu puoi vedere il male, e tu non potrai mirare in faccia l'iniquità. Perchè volgi tu lo sguardo a que', che fanno del male, e taci allorché l'empio divorasi chi è più giusto di lui?	13 Too pure are your eyes to look upon evil, and the sight of misery you cannot endure. Why, then, do you gaze on the faithless in silence while the wicked man devours one more just than himself?
14 E tu fai degli uomini, come de' pesci del mare, e come degli insetti, che non hanno re.	14 You have made man like the fish of the sea, like creeping things without a ruler.
15 Quegli ogni cosa ha tratto fuora coll'amo, tira colla sua sagena, e ammassa colla sua rete. Di questo egli si goderà, ed esulterà:	15 He brings them all up with his hook, he hauls them away with his net, He gathers them in his seine; and so he rejoices and exults.
16 Per questo offerirà vittime alla sua sagena, e sagrifizj alla sua rete, perchè per mezzo di queste si è accresciuta la sua porzione, e il suo cibo gradito.	16 Therefore he sacrifices to his net, and burns incense to his seine; For thanks to them his portion is generous, and his repast sumptuous.
17 Per questo stende la sua sagena, e non si resta giammai dal fare strage de' popoli.	17 Shall he, then, keep on brandishing his sword to slay peoples without mercy?
