1 Egli allora chiamò a sé i Dodici e diede loro potere e autorità su tutti i demòni e di curare le malattie.	1 He cal ed the Twelve together and gave them power and authority over all devils and to cure diseases,
2 E li mandò ad annunziare il regno di Dio e a guarire gli infermi.	2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal.
3 Disse loro: "Non prendete nulla per il viaggio, né bastone, né bisaccia, né pane, né denaro, né due tuniche per ciascuno.	3 He said to them, 'Take nothing for the journey: neither staff, nor haversack, nor bread, nor money; anddo not have a spare tunic.
4 In qualunque casa entriate, là rimanete e di là poi riprendete il cammino.	4 Whatever house you enter, stay there; and when you leave let your departure be from there.
5 Quanto a coloro che non vi accolgono, nell'uscire dalla loro città, scuotete la polvere dai vostri piedi, a testimonianza contro di essi".	5 As for those who do not welcome you, when you leave their town shake the dust from your feet asevidence against them.'
6 Allora essi partirono e giravano di villaggio in villaggio, annunziando dovunque la buona novella e operando guarigioni.	6 So they set out and went from village to vil age proclaiming the good news and healing everywhere.
7 Intanto il tetrarca Erode sentì parlare di tutti questi avvenimenti e non sapeva che cosa pensare, perché alcuni dicevano: "Giovanni è risuscitato dai morti",	7 Meanwhile Herod the tetrarch had heard about al that was going on; and he was puzzled, becausesome people were saying that John had risen from the dead,
8 altri: "È apparso Elia", e altri ancora: "È risorto uno degli antichi profeti".	8 others that Elijah had reappeared, still others that one of the ancient prophets had come back to life.
9 Ma Erode diceva: "Giovanni l'ho fatto decapitare io; chi è dunque costui, del quale sento dire tali cose?". E cercava di vederlo.	9 But Herod said, 'John? I beheaded him. So who is this I hear such reports about?' And he was anxiousto see him.
10 Al loro ritorno, gli apostoli raccontarono a Gesù tutto quello che avevano fatto. Allora li prese con sé e si ritirò verso una città chiamata Betsàida.	10 On their return the apostles gave him an account of al they had done. Then he took them with him andwithdrew towards a town called Bethsaida where they could be by themselves.
11 Ma le folle lo seppero e lo seguirono. Egli le accolse e prese a parlar loro del regno di Dio e a guarire quanti avevan bisogno di cure.	11 But the crowds got to know and they went after him. He made them welcome and talked to them aboutthe kingdom of God; and he cured those who were in need of healing.
12 Il giorno cominciava a declinare e i Dodici gli si avvicinarono dicendo: "Congeda la folla, perché vada nei villaggi e nelle campagne dintorno per alloggiare e trovar cibo, poiché qui siamo in una zona deserta".	12 It was late afternoon when the Twelve came up to him and said, 'Send the people away, and they cango to the vil ages and farms round about to find lodging and food; for we are in a lonely place here.'
13 Gesù disse loro: "Dategli voi stessi da mangiare". Ma essi risposero: "Non abbiamo che cinque pani e due pesci, a meno che non andiamo noi a comprare viveri per tutta questa gente".	13 He replied, 'Give them something to eat yourselves.' But they said, 'We have no more than five loavesand two fish, unless we are to go ourselves and buy food for al these people.'
14 C'erano infatti circa cinquemila uomini. Egli disse ai discepoli: "Fateli sedere per gruppi di cinquanta".	14 For there were about five thousand men. But he said to his disciples, 'Get them to sit down in parties ofabout fifty.'
15 Così fecero e li invitarono a sedersi tutti quanti.	15 They did so and made them al sit down.
16 Allora egli prese i cinque pani e i due pesci e, levati gli occhi al cielo, li benedisse, li spezzò e li diede ai discepoli perché lo distribuissero alla folla.	16 Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, raised his eyes to heaven, and said the blessing overthem; then he broke them and handed them to his disciples to distribute among the crowd.
17 Tutti mangiarono e si saziarono e delle parti loro avanzate furono portate via dodici ceste.	17 They al ate as much as they wanted, and when the scraps left over were col ected they fil ed twelvebaskets.
18 Un giorno, mentre Gesù si trovava in un luogo appartato a pregare e i discepoli erano con lui, pose loro questa domanda: "Chi sono io secondo la gente?".	18 Now it happened that he was praying alone, and his disciples came to him and he put this question tothem, 'Who do the crowds say I am?'
19 Essi risposero: "Per alcuni Giovanni il Battista, per altri Elia, per altri uno degli antichi profeti che è risorto".	19 And they answered, 'Some say John the Baptist; others Elijah; others again one of the ancientprophets come back to life.'
20 Allora domandò: "Ma voi chi dite che io sia?". Pietro, prendendo la parola, rispose: "Il Cristo di Dio".	20 'But you,' he said to them, 'who do you say I am?' It was Peter who spoke up. 'The Christ of God,' hesaid.
21 Egli allora ordinò loro severamente di non riferirlo a nessuno.	21 But he gave them strict orders and charged them not to say this to anyone.
22 "Il Figlio dell'uomo, disse, deve soffrire molto, essere riprovato dagli anziani, dai sommi sacerdoti e dagli scribi, esser messo a morte e risorgere il terzo giorno".	22 He said, 'The Son of man is destined to suffer grievously, to be rejected by the elders and chief priestsand scribes and to be put to death, and to be raised up on the third day.'
23 Poi, a tutti, diceva: "Se qualcuno vuol venire dietro a me, rinneghi se stesso, prenda la sua croce ogni giorno e mi segua.	23 Then, speaking to al , he said, 'If anyone wants to be a fol ower of mine, let him renounce himself andtake up his cross every day and fol ow me.
24 Chi vorrà salvare la propria vita, la perderà, ma chi perderà la propria vita per me, la salverà.	24 Anyone who wants to save his life wil lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake, wil save it.
25 Che giova all'uomo guadagnare il mondo intero, se poi si perde o rovina se stesso?	25 What benefit is it to anyone to win the whole world and forfeit or lose his very self?
26 Chi si vergognerà di me e delle mie parole, di lui si vergognerà il Figlio dell'uomo, quando verrà nella gloria sua e del Padre e degli angeli santi.	26 For if anyone is ashamed of me and of my words, of him the Son of man wil be ashamed when hecomes in his own glory and in the glory of the Father and the holy angels.
27 In verità vi dico: vi sono alcuni qui presenti, che non morranno prima di aver visto il regno di Dio".	27 'I tel you truly, there are some standing here who wil not taste death before they see the kingdom ofGod.'
28 Circa otto giorni dopo questi discorsi, prese con sé Pietro, Giovanni e Giacomo e salì sul monte a pregare.	28 Now about eight days after this had been said, he took with him Peter, John and James and went upthe mountain to pray.
29 E, mentre pregava, il suo volto cambiò d'aspetto e la sua veste divenne candida e sfolgorante.	29 And it happened that, as he was praying, the aspect of his face was changed and his clothing becamesparkling white.
30 Ed ecco due uomini parlavano con lui: erano Mosè ed Elia,	30 And suddenly there were two men talking to him; they were Moses and Elijah
31 apparsi nella loro gloria, e parlavano della sua dipartita che avrebbe portato a compimento a Gerusalemme.	31 appearing in glory, and they were speaking of his passing which he was to accomplish in Jerusalem.
32 Pietro e i suoi compagni erano oppressi dal sonno; tuttavia restarono svegli e videro la sua gloria e i due uomini che stavano con lui.	32 Peter and his companions were heavy with sleep, but they woke up and saw his glory and the two menstanding with him.
33 Mentre questi si separavano da lui, Pietro disse a Gesù: "Maestro, è bello per noi stare qui. Facciamo tre tende, una per te, una per Mosè e una per Elia". Egli non sapeva quel che diceva.	33 As these were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, 'Master, it is wonderful for us to be here; so let usmake three shelters, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.' He did not know what he was saying.
34 Mentre parlava così, venne una nube e li avvolse; all'entrare in quella nube, ebbero paura.	34 As he was saying this, a cloud came and covered them with shadow; and when they went into thecloud the disciples were afraid.
35 E dalla nube uscì una voce, che diceva: "Questi è il Figlio mio, l'eletto; ascoltatelo".	35 And a voice came from the cloud saying, 'This is my Son, the Chosen One. Listen to him.'
36 Appena la voce cessò, Gesù restò solo. Essi tacquero e in quei giorni non riferirono a nessuno ciò che avevano visto.	36 And after the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. The disciples kept silence and, at that time,told no one what they had seen.
37 Il giorno seguente, quando furon discesi dal monte, una gran folla gli venne incontro.	37 Now it happened that on the fol owing day when they were coming down from the mountain a largecrowd came to meet him.
38 A un tratto dalla folla un uomo si mise a gridare: "Maestro, ti prego di volgere lo sguardo a mio figlio, perché è l'unico che ho.	38 And suddenly a man in the crowd cried out. 'Master,' he said, 'I implore you to look at my son: he is myonly child.
39 Ecco, uno spirito lo afferra e subito egli grida, lo scuote ed egli da' schiuma e solo a fatica se ne allontana lasciandolo sfinito.	39 A spirit wil suddenly take hold of him, and all at once it gives a sudden cry and throws the boy intoconvulsions with foaming at the mouth; it is slow to leave him, but when it does, it leaves the boy worn out.
40 Ho pregato i tuoi discepoli di scacciarlo, ma non ci sono riusciti".	40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, and they could not.'
41 Gesù rispose: "O generazione incredula e perversa, fino a quando sarò con voi e vi sopporterò? Conducimi qui tuo figlio".	41 In reply Jesus said, 'Faithless and perverse generation! How much longer must I be among you andput up with you? Bring your son here.'
42 Mentre questi si avvicinava, il demonio lo gettò per terra agitandolo con convulsioni. Gesù minacciò lo spirito immondo, risanò il fanciullo e lo consegnò a suo padre.	42 Even while the boy was coming, the devil threw him to the ground in convulsions. But Jesus rebukedthe unclean spirit and cured the boy and gave him back to his father,
43 E tutti furono stupiti per la grandezza di Dio. Mentre tutti erano sbalorditi per tutte le cose che faceva, disse ai suoi discepoli:	43 and everyone was awestruck by the greatness of God. But while everyone was ful of admiration for alhe did, he said to his disciples,
44 "Mettetevi bene in mente queste parole: Il Figlio dell'uomo sta per esser consegnato in mano degli uomini".	44 'For your part, you must have these words constantly in mind: The Son of man is going to be deliveredinto the power of men.'
45 Ma essi non comprendevano questa frase; per loro restava così misteriosa che non ne comprendevano il senso e avevano paura a rivolgergli domande su tale argomento.	45 But they did not understand what he said; it was hidden from them so that they should not see themeaning of it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.
46 Frattanto sorse una discussione tra loro, chi di essi fosse il più grande.	46 An argument started between them about which of them was the greatest.
47 Allora Gesù, conoscendo il pensiero del loro cuore, prese un fanciullo, se lo mise vicino e disse:	47 Jesus knew what thoughts were going through their minds, and he took a little child whom he set byhis side
48 "Chi accoglie questo fanciullo nel mio nome, accoglie me; e chi accoglie me, accoglie colui che mi ha mandato. Poiché chi è il più piccolo tra tutti voi, questi è grande".	48 and then he said to them, 'Anyone who welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; andanyone who welcomes me, welcomes the one who sent me. The least among you all is the one who is thegreatest.'
49 Giovanni prese la parola dicendo: "Maestro, abbiamo visto un tale che scacciava demòni nel tuo nome e glielo abbiamo impedito, perché non è con noi tra i tuoi seguaci".	49 John spoke up. 'Master,' he said, 'we saw someone driving out devils in your name, and because he isnot with us we tried to stop him.'
50 Ma Gesù gli rispose: "Non glielo impedite, perché chi non è contro di voi, è per voi".	50 But Jesus said to him, 'You must not stop him: anyone who is not against you is for you.'
51 Mentre stavano compiendosi i giorni in cui sarebbe stato tolto dal mondo, si diresse decisamente verso Gerusalemme	51 Now it happened that as the time drew near for him to be taken up, he resolutely turned his facetowards Jerusalem
52 e mandò avanti dei messaggeri. Questi si incamminarono ed entrarono in un villaggio di Samaritani per fare i preparativi per lui.	52 and sent messengers ahead of him. These set out, and they went into a Samaritan vil age to makepreparations for him,
53 Ma essi non vollero riceverlo, perché era diretto verso Gerusalemme.	53 but the people would not receive him because he was making for Jerusalem.
54 Quando videro ciò, i discepoli Giacomo e Giovanni dissero: "Signore, vuoi che diciamo che 'scenda un fuoco dal cielo e li consumi'?".	54 Seeing this, the disciples James and John said, 'Lord, do you want us to cal down fire from heaven toburn them up?'
55 Ma Gesù si voltò e li rimproverò.	55 But he turned and rebuked them,
56 E si avviarono verso un altro villaggio.	56 and they went on to another village.
57 Mentre andavano per la strada, un tale gli disse: "Ti seguirò dovunque tu vada".	57 As they travel ed along they met a man on the road who said to him, 'I wil fol ow you wherever you go.'
58 Gesù gli rispose: "Le volpi hanno le loro tane e gli uccelli del cielo i loro nidi, ma il Figlio dell'uomo non ha dove posare il capo".	58 Jesus answered, 'Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man hasnowhere to lay his head.'
59 A un altro disse: "Seguimi". E costui rispose: "Signore, concedimi di andare a seppellire prima mio padre".	59 Another to whom he said, 'Fol ow me,' replied, 'Let me go and bury my father first.'
60 Gesù replicò: "Lascia che i morti seppelliscano i loro morti; tu va' e annunzia il regno di Dio".	60 But he answered, 'Leave the dead to bury their dead; your duty is to go and spread the news of thekingdom of God.'
61 Un altro disse: "Ti seguirò, Signore, ma prima lascia che io mi congedi da quelli di casa".	61 Another said, 'I wil fol ow you, sir, but first let me go and say good -- bye to my people at home.'
62 Ma Gesù gli rispose: "Nessuno che ha messo mano all'aratro e poi si volge indietro, è adatto per il regno di Dio".	62 Jesus said to him, 'Once the hand is laid on the plough, no one who looks back is fit for the kingdom ofGod.'
