| 1 Diede poi questo ordine al maggiordomo della sua casa: "Riempi i sacchi di quegli uomini di tanti viveri quanti ne possono contenere e metti il denaro di ciascuno alla bocca del suo sacco. | 1 Then he commanded the steward of his house, "Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man's money in the mouth of his sack, |
| 2 Insieme metterai la mia coppa, la coppa d'argento, alla bocca del sacco del più giovane, con il denaro del suo grano". Quegli fece secondo l'ordine di Giuseppe. | 2 and put my cup, the silver cup, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest, with his money for the grain." And he did as Joseph told him. |
| 3 Al mattino, fattosi chiaro, quegli uomini furono fatti partire con i loro asini. | 3 As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away with their asses. |
| 4 Erano appena usciti dalla città e ancora non si erano allontanati, quando Giuseppe disse al maggiordomo della sua casa: "Su, insegui quegli uomini, raggiungili e di' loro: Perché avete reso male per bene? | 4 When they had gone but a short distance from the city, Joseph said to his steward, "Up, follow after the men; and when you overtake them, say to them, 'Why have you returned evil for good? Why have you stolen my silver cup? |
| 5 Non è forse questa la coppa in cui beve il mio signore e per mezzo della quale egli suole trarre i presagi? Avete fatto male a fare così". | 5 Is it not from this that my lord drinks, and by this that he divines? You have done wrong in so doing.'" |
| 6 Egli li raggiunse e ripeté loro queste parole. | 6 When he overtook them, he spoke to them these words. |
| 7 Quelli gli dissero: "Perché il mio signore dice queste cose? Lungi dai tuoi servi il fare una tale cosa! | 7 They said to him, "Why does my lord speak such words as these? Far be it from your servants that they should do such a thing! |
| 8 Ecco, il denaro che abbiamo trovato alla bocca dei nostri sacchi te lo abbiamo riportato dal paese di Canaan e come potremmo rubare argento od oro dalla casa del tuo padrone? | 8 Behold, the money which we found in the mouth of our sacks, we brought back to you from the land of Canaan; how then should we steal silver or gold from your lord's house? |
| 9 Quello dei tuoi servi, presso il quale si troverà, sarà messo a morte e anche noi diventeremo schiavi del mio signore". | 9 With whomever of your servants it be found, let him die, and we also will be my lord's slaves." |
| 10 Rispose: "Ebbene, come avete detto, così sarà: colui, presso il quale si troverà, sarà mio schiavo e voi sarete innocenti". | 10 He said, "Let it be as you say: he with whom it is found shall be my slave, and the rest of you shall be blameless." |
| 11 Ciascuno si affrettò a scaricare a terra il suo sacco e lo aprì. | 11 Then every man quickly lowered his sack to the ground, and every man opened his sack. |
| 12 Quegli li frugò dal maggiore al più piccolo, e la coppa fu trovata nel sacco di Beniamino. | 12 And he searched, beginning with the eldest and ending with the youngest; and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack. |
| 13 Allora essi si stracciarono le vesti, ricaricarono ciascuno il proprio asino e tornarono in città. | 13 Then they rent their clothes, and every man loaded his ass, and they returned to the city. |
| 14 Giuda e i suoi fratelli vennero nella casa di Giuseppe, che si trovava ancora là, e si gettarono a terra davanti a lui. | 14 When Judah and his brothers came to Joseph's house, he was still there; and they fell before him to the ground. |
| 15 Giuseppe disse loro: "Che azione avete commessa? Non sapete che un uomo come me è capace di indovinare?". | 15 Joseph said to them, "What deed is this that you have done? Do you not know that such a man as I can indeed divine?" |
| 16 Giuda disse: "Che diremo al mio signore? Come parlare? Come giustificarci? Dio ha scoperto la colpa dei tuoi servi... Eccoci schiavi del mio signore, noi e colui che è stato trovato in possesso della coppa". | 16 And Judah said, "What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? Or how can we clear ourselves? God has found out the guilt of your servants; behold, we are my lord's slaves, both we and he also in whose hand the cup has been found." |
17 Ma egli rispose: "Lungi da me il far questo! L'uomo trovato in possesso della coppa, lui sarà mio schiavo: quanto a voi, tornate in pace da vostro padre".
| 17 But he said, "Far be it from me that I should do so! Only the man in whose hand the cup was found shall be my slave; but as for you, go up in peace to your father." |
| 18 Allora Giuda gli si fece innanzi e disse: "Mio signore, sia permesso al tuo servo di far sentire una parola agli orecchi del mio signore; non si accenda la tua ira contro il tuo servo, perché il faraone è come te! | 18 Then Judah went up to him and said, "O my lord, let your servant, I pray you, speak a word in my lord's ears, and let not your anger burn against your servant; for you are like Pharaoh himself. |
| 19 Il mio signore aveva interrogato i suoi servi: Avete un padre o un fratello? | 19 My lord asked his servants, saying, 'Have you a father, or a brother?' |
| 20 E noi avevamo risposto al mio signore: Abbiamo un padre vecchio e un figlio ancor giovane natogli in vecchiaia, suo fratello è morto ed egli è rimasto il solo dei figli di sua madre e suo padre lo ama. | 20 And we said to my lord, 'We have a father, an old man, and a young brother, the child of his old age; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother's children; and his father loves him.' |
| 21 Tu avevi detto ai tuoi servi: Conducetelo qui da me, perché lo possa vedere con i miei occhi. | 21 Then you said to your servants, 'Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes upon him.' |
| 22 Noi avevamo risposto al mio signore: Il giovinetto non può abbandonare suo padre: se lascerà suo padre, questi morirà. | 22 We said to my lord, 'The lad cannot leave his father, for if he should leave his father, his father would die.' |
| 23 Ma tu avevi soggiunto ai tuoi servi: Se il vostro fratello minore non verrà qui con voi, non potrete più venire alla mia presenza. | 23 Then you said to your servants, 'Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall see my face no more.' |
| 24 Quando dunque eravamo ritornati dal tuo servo, mio padre, gli riferimmo le parole del mio signore. | 24 When we went back to your servant my father we told him the words of my lord. |
| 25 E nostro padre disse: Tornate ad acquistare per noi un po' di viveri. | 25 And when our father said, 'Go again, buy us a little food,' |
| 26 E noi rispondemmo: Non possiamo ritornare laggiù: se c'è con noi il nostro fratello minore, andremo; altrimenti, non possiamo essere ammessi alla presenza di quell'uomo senza avere con noi il nostro fratello minore. | 26 we said, 'We cannot go down. If our youngest brother goes with us, then we will go down; for we cannot see the man's face unless our youngest brother is with us.' |
| 27 Allora il tuo servo, mio padre, ci disse: Voi sapete che due figli mi aveva procreato mia moglie. | 27 Then your servant my father said to us, 'You know that my wife bore me two sons; |
| 28 Uno partì da me e dissi: certo è stato sbranato! Da allora non l'ho più visto. | 28 one left me, and I said, Surely he has been torn to pieces; and I have never seen him since. |
| 29 Se ora mi porterete via anche questo e gli capitasse una disgrazia, voi fareste scendere con dolore la mia canizie nella tomba. | 29 If you take this one also from me, and harm befalls him, you will bring down my gray hairs in sorrow to Sheol.' |
| 30 Ora, quando io arriverò dal tuo servo, mio padre, e il giovinetto non sarà con noi, mentre la vita dell'uno è legata alla vita dell'altro, | 30 Now therefore, when I come to your servant my father, and the lad is not with us, then, as his life is bound up in the lad's life, |
31 appena egli avrà visto che il giovinetto non è con noi, morirà e i tuoi servi avranno fatto scendere con dolore negli inferi la canizie del tuo servo, nostro padre.
| 31 when he sees that the lad is not with us, he will die; and your servants will bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father with sorrow to Sheol. |
| 32 Ma il tuo servo si è reso garante del giovinetto presso mio padre: Se non te lo ricondurrò, sarò colpevole verso mio padre per tutta la vita. | 32 For your servant became surety for the lad to my father, saying, 'If I do not bring him back to you, then I shall bear the blame in the sight of my father all my life.' |
| 33 Ora, lascia che il tuo servo rimanga invece del giovinetto come schiavo del mio signore e il giovinetto torni lassù con i suoi fratelli! | 33 Now therefore, let your servant, I pray you, remain instead of the lad as a slave to my lord; and let the lad go back with his brothers. |
| 34 Perché, come potrei tornare da mio padre senz'avere con me il giovinetto? Ch'io non veda il male che colpirebbe mio padre!". | 34 For how can I go back to my father if the lad is not with me? I fear to see the evil that would come upon my father." |
