NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Final y, brothers, pray for us that the Lord's message may spread quickly, and be received with honouras it was among you;1 De cetero fratres, orate pro nobis ut sermo Dei currat, et clarificetur, sicut et apud vos :
and pray that we may be preserved from bigoted and evil people, for not everyone has faith.2 et ut liberemur ab importunis, et malis hominibus : non enim omnium est fides.
You can rely on the Lord, who wil give you strength and guard you from the evil One,3 Fidelis autem Deus est, qui confirmabit vos, et custodiet a malo.
and we, in the Lord, have every confidence in you, that you are doing and wil go on doing al that wetel you.4 Confidimus autem de vobis, in Domino, quoniam quæ præcepimus, et facitis, et facietis.
May the Lord turn your hearts towards the love of God and the perseverance of Christ.5 Dominus autem dirigat corda vestra in caritate Dei, et patientia Christi.
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we urge you, brothers, to keep away from any of the brothers wholives an undisciplined life, not in accordance with the tradition you received from us.6 Denuntiamus autem vobis, fratres, in nomine Domini nostri Jesu Christi, ut subtrahatis vos ab omni fratre ambulante inordinate, et non secundum traditionem, quam acceperunt a nobis.
You know how you should take us as your model: we were not undisciplined when we were with you,7 Ipsi enim scitis quemadmodum oporteat imitari nos : quoniam non inquieti fuimus inter vos :
nor did we ever accept food from anyone without paying for it; no, we worked with unsparing energy, night and day, so as not to be a burden on any of you.8 neque gratis panem manducavimus ab aliquo, sed in labore, et in fatigatione, nocte et die operantes, ne quem vestrum gravaremus.
This was not because we had no right to be, but in order to make ourselves a model for you to imitate.9 Non quasi non habuerimus potestatem, sed ut nosmetipsos formam daremus vobis ad imitandum nos.
We urged you when we were with you not to let anyone eat who refused to work.10 Nam et cum essemus apud vos, hoc denuntiabamus vobis : quoniam si quis non vult operari, nec manducet.
Now we hear that there are some of you who are living lives without any discipline, doing no workthemselves but interfering with other people's.11 Audivimus enim inter vos quosdam ambulare inquiete, nihil operantes, sed curiose agentes.
In the Lord Jesus Christ, we urge and cal on people of this kind to go on quietly working and earningthe food that they eat.12 Iis autem, qui ejusmodi sunt, denuntiemus, et obsecramus in Domino Jesu Christo, ut cum silentio operantes, suum panem manducent.
My brothers, never slacken in doing what is right.13 Vos autem, fratres, nolite deficere benefacientes.
If anyone refuses to obey what I have written in this letter, take note of him and have nothing to dowith him, so that he wil be ashamed of himself,14 Quod si quis non obedit verbo nostro per epistolam, hunc notate, et ne commisceamini cum illo ut confundatur :
though you are not to treat him as an enemy, but to correct him as a brother.15 et nolite quasi inimicum existimare, sed corripite ut fratrem.
May the Lord of peace himself give you peace at al times and in every way. The Lord be with you all.16 Ipse autem Dominus pacis det vobis pacem sempiternam in omni loco. Dominus sit cum omnibus vobis.
This greeting is in my own hand-PAUL. It is the mark of genuineness in every letter; this is my own writing.17 Salutatio, mea manu Pauli : quod est signum in omni epistola, ita scribo.
May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.18 Gratia Domini nostri Jesu Christi cum omnibus vobis. Amen.
