Luke 19

NEW JERUSALEM	VULGATA
1 He entered Jericho and was going through the town	1 Et ingressus perambulabat Jericho.
2 and suddenly a man whose name was Zacchaeus made his appearance; he was one of the senior taxcol ectors and a wealthy man.	2 Et ecce vir nomine Zachæus : et hic princeps erat publicanorum, et ipse dives :
3 He kept trying to see which Jesus was, but he was too short and could not see him for the crowd;	3 et quærebat videre Jesum, quis esset : et non poterat præ turba, quia statura pusillus erat.
4 so he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus who was to pass that way.	4 Et præcurrens ascendit in arborem sycomorum ut videret eum : quia inde erat transiturus.
5 When Jesus reached the spot he looked up and spoke to him, 'Zacchaeus, come down. Hurry,because I am to stay at your house today.'	5 Et cum venisset ad locum, suspiciens Jesus vidit illum, et dixit ad eum : Zachæe, festinans descende : quia hodie in domo tua oportet me manere.
6 And he hurried down and welcomed him joyful y.	6 Et festinans descendit, et excepit illum gaudens.
7 They al complained when they saw what was happening. 'He has gone to stay at a sinner's house,'they said.	7 Et cum viderent omnes, murmurabant, dicentes quod ad hominem peccatorem divertisset.
8 But Zacchaeus stood his ground and said to the Lord, 'Look, sir, I am going to give half my property tothe poor, and if I have cheated anybody I wil pay him back four times the amount.'	8 Stans autem Zachæus, dixit ad Dominum : Ecce dimidium bonorum meorum, Domine, do pauperibus : et si quid aliquem defraudavi, reddo quadruplum.
9 And Jesus said to him, 'Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son ofAbraham;	9 Ait Jesus ad eum : Quia hodie salus domui huic facta est : eo quod et ipse filius sit Abrahæ.
10 for the Son of man has come to seek out and save what was lost.'	10 Venit enim Filius hominis quærere, et salvum facere quod perierat.
11 While the people were listening to this he went on to tel a parable, because he was near Jerusalemand they thought that the kingdom of God was going to show itself then and there.	11 Hæc illis audientibus adjiciens, dixit parabolam, eo quod esset prope Jerusalem : et quia existimarent quod confestim regnum Dei manifestaretur.
12 Accordingly he said, 'A man of noble birth went to a distant country to be appointed king and thenreturn.	12 Dixit ergo : Homo quidam nobilis abiit in regionem longinquam accipere sibi regnum, et reverti.
13 He summoned ten of his servants and gave them ten pounds, tel ing them, "Trade with these, until Iget back."	13 Vocatis autem decem servis suis, dedit eis decem mnas, et ait ad illos : Negotiamini dum venio.
14 But his compatriots detested him and sent a delegation to fol ow him with this message, "We do notwant this man to be our king."	14 Cives autem ejus oderant eum : et miserunt legationem post illum, dicentes : Nolumus hunc regnare super nos.
15 'Now it happened that on his return, having received his appointment as king, he sent for thoseservants to whom he had given the money, to find out what profit each had made by trading.	15 Et factum est ut rediret accepto regno : et jussit vocari servos, quibus dedit pecuniam, ut sciret quantum quisque negotiatus esset.
16 The first came in, "Sir," he said, "your one pound has brought in ten."	16 Venit autem primus dicens : Domine, mna tua decem mnas acquisivit.
17 He replied, "Wel done, my good servant! Since you have proved yourself trustworthy in a very smalthing, you shal have the government of ten cities."	17 Et ait illi : Euge bone serve, quia in modico fuisti fidelis, eris potestatem habens super decem civitates.
18 Then came the second, "Sir," he said, "your one pound has made five."	18 Et alter venit, dicens : Domine, mna tua fecit quinque mnas.
19 To this one also he said, "And you shal be in charge of five cities."	19 Et huic ait : Et tu esto super quinque civitates.
20 Next came the other, "Sir," he said, "here is your pound. I put it away safely wrapped up in a cloth	20 Et alter venit, dicens : Domine, ecce mna tua, quam habui repositam in sudario :
21 because I was afraid of you; for you are an exacting man: you gather in what you have not laid outand reap what you have not sown."	21 timui enim te, quia homo austerus es : tollis quod non posuisti, et metis quod non seminasti.
22 He said to him, "You wicked servant! Out of your own mouth I condemn you. So you knew that I wasan exacting man, gathering in what I have not laid out and reaping what I have not sown?	22 Dicit ei : De ore tuo te judico, serve nequam. Sciebas quod ego homo austerus sum, tollens quod non posui, et metens quod non seminavi :
23 Then why did you not put my money in the bank? On my return I could have drawn it out withinterest."	23 et quare non dedisti pecuniam meam ad mensam, ut ego veniens cum usuris utique exegissem illam ?
24 And he said to those standing by, "Take the pound from him and give it to the man who has tenpounds."	24 Et astantibus dixit : Auferte ab illo mnam, et date illi qui decem mnas habet.
25 And they said to him, "But, sir, he has ten pounds . . ."	25 Et dixerunt ei : Domine, habet decem mnas.
26 "I tel you, to everyone who has wil be given more; but anyone who has not wil be deprived even ofwhat he has.	26 Dico autem vobis, quia omni habenti dabitur, et abundabit : ab eo autem qui non habet, et quod habet auferetur ab eo.
27 "As for my enemies who did not want me for their king, bring them here and execute them in mypresence." '	27 Verumtamen inimicos meos illos, qui noluerunt me regnare super se, adducite huc : et interficite ante me.
28 When he had said this he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.	28 Et his dictis, præcedebat ascendens Jerosolymam.
29 Now it happened that when he was near Bethphage and Bethany, close by the Mount of Olives as itis cal ed, he sent two of the disciples, saying,	29 Et factum est, cum appropinquasset ad Bethphage et Bethaniam, ad montem qui vocatur Oliveti, misit duos discipulos suos,
30 'Go to the vil age opposite, and as you enter it you wil find a tethered colt that no one has ever yetridden. Untie it and bring it here.	30 dicens : Ite in castellum quod contra est : in quod introëuntes, invenietis pullum asinæ alligatum, cui nemo umquam hominum sedit : solvite illum, et adducite.
31 If anyone asks you, "Why are you untying it?" you are to say this, "The Master needs it." '	31 Et si quis vos interrogaverit : Quare solvitis ? sic dicetis ei : Quia Dominus operam ejus desiderat.
32 The messengers went off and found everything just as he had told them.	32 Abierunt autem qui missi erant : et invenerunt, sicut dixit illis, stantem pullum.
33 As they were untying the colt, its owners said, 'Why are you untying it?'	33 Solventibus autem illis pullum, dixerunt domini ejus ad illos : Quid solvitis pullum ?
34 and they answered, 'The Master needs it.'	34 At illi dixerunt : Quia Dominus eum necessarium habet.
35 So they took the colt to Jesus and, throwing their cloaks on its back, they lifted Jesus on to it.	35 Et duxerunt illum ad Jesum. Et jactantes vestimenta sua supra pullum, imposuerunt Jesum.
36 As he moved off, they spread their cloaks in the road,	36 Eunte autem illo, substernebant vestimenta sua in via :
37 and now, as he was approaching the downward slope of the Mount of Olives, the whole group ofdisciples joyful y began to praise God at the top of their voices for all the miracles they had seen.	37 et cum appropinquaret jam ad descensum montis Oliveti, cœperunt omnes turbæ discipulorum gaudentes laudare Deum voce magna super omnibus, quas viderant, virtutibus,
38 They cried out: Blessed is he who is coming as King in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven andglory in the highest heavens!	38 dicentes : Benedictus, qui venit rex in nomine Domini : pax in cælo, et gloria in excelsis.
39 Some Pharisees in the crowd said to him, 'Master, reprove your disciples,'	39 Et quidam pharisæorum de turbis dixerunt ad illum : Magister, increpa discipulos tuos.
40 but he answered, 'I tell you, if these keep silence, the stones wil cry out.'	40 Quibus ipse ait : Dico vobis, quia si hi tacuerint, lapides clamabunt.
41 As he drew near and came in sight of the city he shed tears over it	41 Et ut appropinquavit, videns civitatem flevit super illam, dicens :
42 and said, 'If you too had only recognised on this day the way to peace! But in fact it is hidden fromyour eyes!	42 Quia si cognovisses et tu, et quidem in hac die tua, quæ ad pacem tibi : nunc autem abscondita sunt ab oculis tuis.
43 Yes, a time is coming when your enemies wil raise fortifications all round you, when they wil encircleyou and hem you in on every side;	43 Quia venient dies in te : et circumdabunt te inimici tui vallo, et circumdabunt te : et coangustabunt te undique :
44 they wil dash you and the children inside your wal s to the ground; they wil leave not one stonestanding on another within you, because you did not recognise the moment of your visitation.'	44 et ad terram prosternent te, et filios tuos, qui in te sunt, et non relinquent in te lapidem super lapidem : eo quod non cognoveris tempus visitationis tuæ.
45 Then he went into the Temple and began driving out those who were busy trading, saying to them,	45 Et ingressus in templum, cœpit ejicere vendentes in illo, et ementes,
46 'According to scripture, my house shal be a house of prayer but you have turned it into a bandits'den.'	46 dicens illis : Scriptum est : Quia domus mea domus orationis est : vos autem fecistis illam speluncam latronum.
47 He taught in the Temple every day. The chief priests and the scribes, in company with the leadingcitizens, tried to do away with him,	47 Et erat docens quotidie in templo. Principes autem sacerdotum, et scribæ, et princeps plebis quærebant illum perdere :
48 but they could not find a way to carry this out because the whole people hung on his words.	48 et non inveniebant quid facerent illi. Omnis enim populus suspensus erat, audiens illum.
