1 He entered Jericho and was going through the town	1 Ed entrato in Gerico passava pel mezzo della città.
2 and suddenly a man whose name was Zacchaeus made his appearance; he was one of the senior taxcol ectors and a wealthy man.	2 Quand' ecco un uomo per nome Zaccheo: il quale era capo de' pubblicani, ed ei pur facoltoso.
3 He kept trying to see which Jesus was, but he was too short and could not see him for the crowd;	3 E bramava di conoscer di vista Gesù: e non poteva a causa della folla, perché era piccolo di statura.
4 so he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus who was to pass that way.	4 E porse innanzi, e sali sopra una pianta di sicomoro a fine di vederlo: perché era per passare da quella parte.
5 When Jesus reached the spot he looked up and spoke to him, 'Zacchaeus, come down. Hurry,because I am to stay at your house today.'	5 E arrivato Gesù a quel luogo, alzati gli occhi lo vide, e gli disse: Zaccheo, presto cala giù: perché fa d'uopo, ch'io alberghi quest' oggi in casa tua.
6 And he hurried down and welcomed him joyful y.	6 E quegli frettolosamente discese, e lo accolse allegramente.
7 They al complained when they saw what was happening. 'He has gone to stay at a sinner's house,'they said.	7 Veduto ciò, tutti mormoravano, dicendo, che era andato a posare in casa di un peccatore.
8 But Zacchaeus stood his ground and said to the Lord, 'Look, sir, I am going to give half my property tothe poor, and if I have cheated anybody I wil pay him back four times the amount.'	8 Ma Zaccheo si presentò, e disse al Signore: Ecco che io, o Signore, do la metà de' miei beni a poveri: e se ad alcuno ho tolto qualche cosa, gli rendo il quadrupolo.
9 And Jesus said to him, 'Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son ofAbraham;	9 E Gesù gli disse: Oggi questa casa ha ottenuto salute: perché anche questo è figliuolo di Abramo.
10 for the Son of man has come to seek out and save what was lost.'	10 Imperocché è venuto il figliuolo dell'uomo a cercare, e salvare que', che si erano perduti.
11 While the people were listening to this he went on to tel a parable, because he was near Jerusalemand they thought that the kingdom of God was going to show itself then and there.	11 E stando quegli ad ascoltare tali cose, continuò, e disse una parabola sopra l'esser lui vicino a Gerusalemme: e sul credere, che essi facevano, che presto dovesse manifestarsi il regno di Dio.
12 Accordingly he said, 'A man of noble birth went to a distant country to be appointed king and thenreturn.	12 Disse adunque: Un nobil uomo andò in lontano paese a prender possesso di un regno per poi ritornare.
13 He summoned ten of his servants and gave them ten pounds, tel ing them, "Trade with these, until Iget back."	13 E chiamati a se dieci de' suoi servidori, diede loro dieci mine, e disse loro: Impiegatele sino al mio ritorno.
14 But his compatriots detested him and sent a delegation to fol ow him with this message, "We do notwant this man to be our king."	14 Ma i suoi concittadini gli volevano male: e gli spediron dietro ambasciadori, dicendo: Non vogliamo costui per nostro re.
15 'Now it happened that on his return, having received his appointment as king, he sent for thoseservants to whom he had given the money, to find out what profit each had made by trading.	15 E avvenne, che tornato egli dopo aver preso possesso del regno fece chiamare a sei servidori, ai quali aveva dato il denaro per sapere, che guadagno avesse fatto ciascuno.
16 The first came in, "Sir," he said, "your one pound has brought in ten."	16 E venne il primo, e disse: Signore, la tua mina ne ha fruttate altre dieci.
17 He replied, "Wel done, my good servant! Since you have proved yourself trustworthy in a very smalthing, you shal have the government of ten cities."	17 Ed ei gli disse: Buon per te, servitore fedele, perché se' stato fedele nel poco, sarai signore di dieci città.
18 Then came the second, "Sir," he said, "your one pound has made five."	18 E venne il secondo, e disse: Signore, la tua mina ne ha fruttate cinque.
19 To this one also he said, "And you shal be in charge of five cities."	19 E (il padrone) disse anche a questo: Tu pure sarai signore di cinque città.
20 Next came the other, "Sir," he said, "here is your pound. I put it away safely wrapped up in a cloth	20 E venne un altro, e disse: Signore, eccoti la tua mina, che ho tenuta rivolta in un fazzoletto:
21 because I was afraid of you; for you are an exacting man: you gather in what you have not laid outand reap what you have not sown."	21 Imperocché ho avuto apprensione di te, perché se' di naturale austero: togli quel, che non hai depositato, e mieti quel, che non hai seminato.
22 He said to him, "You wicked servant! Out of your own mouth I condemn you. So you knew that I wasan exacting man, gathering in what I have not laid out and reaping what I have not sown?	22 Ma (il padrone) gli disse: Sa la tua propria confessione ti condanno, servo cattivo: sapevi, che io sono un uomo austero, che tolgo quel, che non ho depositato, e mieto quel, che non ho seminato:
23 Then why did you not put my money in the bank? On my return I could have drawn it out withinterest."	23 E Perché non hai impiegato il mio denaro sopra una banca, che io al mio ritorno lo averi ritirato co' suoi frutti?
24 And he said to those standing by, "Take the pound from him and give it to the man who has tenpounds."	24 E disse agli astanti: Toglietegli la mina, e datela a colui, che ne ha dieci.
25 And they said to him, "But, sir, he has ten pounds . . ."	25 Signore, risposero, egli la dieci mine.
26 "I tel you, to everyone who has wil be given more; but anyone who has not wil be deprived even ofwhat he has.	26 E io vi dico, che sarà dato a chi ha, e sarà nell'abbondanza: a chi poi non ha, sarà levato anche quello che ha.
27 "As for my enemies who did not want me for their king, bring them here and execute them in mypresence." '	27 Quanto poi a que' miei nemici, i quali non mi hanno volato per loro re, conduceteli qui, e uccidetegli alla mia presenza.
28 When he had said this he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.	28 E dette tali cose, camminava innanzi agli altri verso Gerusalemme.
29 Now it happened that when he was near Bethphage and Bethany, close by the Mount of Olives as itis cal ed, he sent two of the disciples, saying,	29 E arrivato che fu vicino a Betfage, e a Betania, al monte detto degli ulivi, mandò due de' suoi discepoli,
30 'Go to the vil age opposite, and as you enter it you wil find a tethered colt that no one has ever yetridden. Untie it and bring it here.	30 E disse loro: Andate nel villaggio, che sta dirimpetto: e in entrando troverete legato un asinello, che non è stato mai cavalcato da alcuno: scioglietelo, e menatemelo.
31 If anyone asks you, "Why are you untying it?" you are to say this, "The Master needs it." '	31 E se alcuno vi domanderà il perché lo sciogliete, gli direte: Perché il Signore ne ha bisogno.
32 The messengers went off and found everything just as he had told them.	32 E quelli, che erano stati spediti, andarono, e trovarono l'asinello starsi nel modo, che egli aveva loro predetto.
33 As they were untying the colt, its owners said, 'Why are you untying it?'	33 E mentre scioglievano l'asinello, i padroni disser loro: Perché lo sciogliete voi?
34 and they answered, 'The Master needs it.'	34 Ed essi lor dissero: Perché il Signore ne ha bisogno.
35 So they took the colt to Jesus and, throwing their cloaks on its back, they lifted Jesus on to it.	35 E lo menarono a Gesù. E distesi i loro mantelli sopra l'asinello, vi poser sopra Gesù.
36 As he moved off, they spread their cloaks in the road,	36 E seguitando egli il suo viaggio, la gente gli distendeva sotto le sue vesti per la strada.
37 and now, as he was approaching the downward slope of the Mount of Olives, the whole group ofdisciples joyful y began to praise God at the top of their voices for all the miracles they had seen.	37 Quando poi fu vicino alla scesa del monte Oliveto, tutta la turba de' discepoli cominciò lietamente a lodare Dio ad alta voce per tutti i prodigj, che veduti avevano,
38 They cried out: Blessed is he who is coming as King in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven andglory in the highest heavens!	38 Dicendo: Benedetto il Re, che viene nel nome del Signore, pace in cielo, e gloria nel più alto de' cieli.
39 Some Pharisees in the crowd said to him, 'Master, reprove your disciples,'	39 E alcuni de' Farisei mescolati col popolo gli dissero: Maestro, sgrida i tuoi discepoli.
40 but he answered, 'I tell you, if these keep silence, the stones wil cry out.'	40 Ma egli rispose loro: Vi dico, che se questi taceranno, grideranno le pietre.
41 As he drew near and came in sight of the city he shed tears over it	41 E avvicinandosi alla città, rimirandola pianse sopra di lei, e disse:
42 and said, 'If you too had only recognised on this day the way to peace! But in fact it is hidden fromyour eyes!	42 O se conoscessi anche tu, e in questo giorno quello, che importa al tuo bene: ma ora questo è a' tuoi occhi celato.
43 Yes, a time is coming when your enemies wil raise fortifications all round you, when they wil encircleyou and hem you in on every side;	43 Conciossiachè verrà per te il tempo: quando i tuoi nemici ti circonderanno di trinciera: e ti serreranno all'intorno: e ti stringeranno per ogni parte:
44 they wil dash you and the children inside your wal s to the ground; they wil leave not one stonestanding on another within you, because you did not recognise the moment of your visitation.'	44 E cacceranno per terra te, e i tuoi figliuoli con te, e non lasceranno in te pietra sopra pietra; perché non hai conosciuto il tempo della visita a te fatta.
45 Then he went into the Temple and began driving out those who were busy trading, saying to them,	45 Ed entrato nel tempio cominciò a scacciare coloro, che in esso vendevano, e comperavano,
46 'According to scripture, my house shal be a house of prayer but you have turned it into a bandits'den.'	46 Dicendo loro: Sta scritto; La casa mia è casa di orazione; e voi l'avete cangiata in ispelonca di ladri.
47 He taught in the Temple every day. The chief priests and the scribes, in company with the leadingcitizens, tried to do away with him,	47 E insegnava ogni giorno nel tempio. Ma i principi de' sacerdoti, e gli Scribi, e i caporioni del popolo cercavano di levarlo dal mondo:
48 but they could not find a way to carry this out because the whole people hung on his words.	48 Né sapevan, che farsi di lui. Conciossiaché tutto il popolo stava a bocca aperta ad udirlo.
