He entered Jericho and was going through the town1 And having entered, he walked through Jericho.
and suddenly a man whose name was Zacchaeus made his appearance; he was one of the senior taxcol ectors and a wealthy man.2 And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. And he was the leader of the tax collectors, and he was wealthy.
He kept trying to see which Jesus was, but he was too short and could not see him for the crowd;3 And he sought to see Jesus, to see who he was. But he was unable to do so, because of the crowd, for he was small in stature.
so he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus who was to pass that way.4 And running ahead, he climbed up a sycamore tree, so that he might see him. For he was to pass near there.
When Jesus reached the spot he looked up and spoke to him, 'Zacchaeus, come down. Hurry, because I am to stay at your house today.'5 And when he had arrived at the place, Jesus looked up and saw him, and he said to him: “Zacchaeus, hurry down. For today, I should lodge in your house.”
And he hurried down and welcomed him joyful y.6 And hurrying, he came down, and he received him joyfully.
They al complained when they saw what was happening. 'He has gone to stay at a sinner's house,'they said.7 And when they all saw this, they murmured, saying that he had turned aside to a sinful man.
But Zacchaeus stood his ground and said to the Lord, 'Look, sir, I am going to give half my property tothe poor, and if I have cheated anybody I wil pay him back four times the amount.'8 But Zacchaeus, standing still, said to the Lord: “Behold, Lord, one half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have cheated anyone in any matter, I will repay him fourfold.”
And Jesus said to him, 'Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son ofAbraham;9 Jesus said to him: “Today, salvation has come to this house; because of this, he too is a son of Abraham.
for the Son of man has come to seek out and save what was lost.'10 For the Son of man has come to seek and to save what had been lost.”
While the people were listening to this he went on to tel a parable, because he was near Jerusalemand they thought that the kingdom of God was going to show itself then and there.11 As they were listening to these things, continuing on, he spoke a parable, because he was nearing Jerusalem, and because they guessed that the kingdom of God might be manifested without delay.
Accordingly he said, 'A man of noble birth went to a distant country to be appointed king and thenreturn.12 Therefore, he said: “A certain man of nobility traveled to a far away region, to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.
He summoned ten of his servants and gave them ten pounds, tel ing them, "Trade with these, until Iget back."13 And calling his ten servants, he gave them ten pounds, and he said to them: ‘Do business until I return.’
But his compatriots detested him and sent a delegation to fol ow him with this message, "We do notwant this man to be our king."14 But his citizens hated him. And so they sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this one to reign over us.’
'Now it happened that on his return, having received his appointment as king, he sent for thoseservants to whom he had given the money, to find out what profit each had made by trading.15 And it happened that he returned, having received the kingdom. And he ordered the servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called so that he would know how much each one had earned by doing business.
The first came in, "Sir," he said, "your one pound has brought in ten."16 Now the first approached, saying: ‘Lord, your one pound has earned ten pounds.’
He replied, "Wel done, my good servant! Since you have proved yourself trustworthy in a very smalthing, you shal have the government of ten cities."17 And he said to him: ‘Well done, good servant. Since you have been faithful in a small matter, you will hold authority over ten cities.’
Then came the second, "Sir," he said, "your one pound has made five."18 And the second came, saying: ‘Lord, your one pound has earned five pounds.’
To this one also he said, "And you shal be in charge of five cities."19 And he said to him, ‘And so, you shall be over five cities.’
Next came the other, "Sir," he said, "here is your pound. I put it away safely wrapped up in a cloth20 And another approached, saying: ‘Lord, behold your one pound, which I kept stored in a cloth.
because I was afraid of you; for you are an exacting man: you gather in what you have not laid outand reap what you have not sown."21 For I feared you, because you are an austere man. You take up what you did not lay down, and you reap what you did not sow.’
He said to him, "You wicked servant! Out of your own mouth I condemn you. So you knew that I wasan exacting man, gathering in what I have not laid out and reaping what I have not sown?22 He said to him: ‘By your own mouth, do I judge you, O wicked servant. You knew that I am an austere man, taking up what I did not lay down, and reaping what I did not sow.
Then why did you not put my money in the bank? On my return I could have drawn it out withinterest."23 And so, why did you not give my money to the bank, so that, upon my return, I might have withdrawn it with interest?’
And he said to those standing by, "Take the pound from him and give it to the man who has tenpounds."24 And he said to the bystanders, ‘Take the pound away from him, and give it to him who has ten pounds.’
And they said to him, "But, sir, he has ten pounds . . ."25 And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten pounds.’
"I tel you, to everyone who has wil be given more; but anyone who has not wil be deprived even ofwhat he has.26 So then, I say to you, that to all who have, it shall be given, and he will have in abundance. And from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.
"As for my enemies who did not want me for their king, bring them here and execute them in mypresence." '27 ‘Yet truly, as for those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here, and put them to death before me.’ ”
When he had said this he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.28 And having said these things, he went ahead, ascending to Jerusalem.
Now it happened that when he was near Bethphage and Bethany, close by the Mount of Olives as itis cal ed, he sent two of the disciples, saying,29 And it happened that, when he had drawn near to Bethphage and Bethania, to the mount which is called Olivet, he sent two of his disciples,
'Go to the vil age opposite, and as you enter it you wil find a tethered colt that no one has ever yetridden. Untie it and bring it here.30 saying: “Go into the town which is opposite you. Upon entering it, you will find the colt of a donkey, tied, on which no man has ever sat. Untie it, and lead it here.
If anyone asks you, "Why are you untying it?" you are to say this, "The Master needs it." '31 And if anyone will ask you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this to him: ‘Because the Lord has requested its service.’ ”
The messengers went off and found everything just as he had told them.32 And those who were sent went out, and they found the colt standing, just as he told them.
As they were untying the colt, its owners said, 'Why are you untying it?'33 Then, as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
and they answered, 'The Master needs it.'34 So they said, “Because the Lord has need of it.”
So they took the colt to Jesus and, throwing their cloaks on its back, they lifted Jesus on to it.35 And they led it to Jesus. And casting their garments on the colt, they helped Jesus onto it.
As he moved off, they spread their cloaks in the road,36 Then, as he was traveling, they were laying down their garments along the way.
and now, as he was approaching the downward slope of the Mount of Olives, the whole group ofdisciples joyful y began to praise God at the top of their voices for all the miracles they had seen.37 And when he was now drawing near to the descent of Mount Olivet, the entire crowd of his disciples began to praise God joyfully, with a loud voice, over all the powerful works which they had seen,
They cried out: Blessed is he who is coming as King in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven andglory in the highest heavens!38 saying: “Blessed is the king who has arrived in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory on high!”
Some Pharisees in the crowd said to him, 'Master, reprove your disciples,'39 And certain Pharisees within the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”
but he answered, 'I tell you, if these keep silence, the stones wil cry out.'40 And he said to them, “I tell you, that if these will keep silent, the stones themselves will cry out.”
As he drew near and came in sight of the city he shed tears over it41 And when he drew near, seeing the city, he wept over it, saying:
and said, 'If you too had only recognised on this day the way to peace! But in fact it is hidden fromyour eyes!42 “If only you had known, indeed even in this your day, which things are for your peace. But now they are hidden from your eyes.
Yes, a time is coming when your enemies wil raise fortifications all round you, when they wil encircleyou and hem you in on every side;43 For the days will overtake you. And your enemies will encircle you with a valley. And they will surround you and hem you in on every side.
they wil dash you and the children inside your wal s to the ground; they wil leave not one stonestanding on another within you, because you did not recognise the moment of your visitation.'44 And they will knock you down to the ground, with your sons who are in you. And they will not leave stone upon stone within you, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”
Then he went into the Temple and began driving out those who were busy trading, saying to them,45 And entering into the temple, he began to cast out those who sold in it, and those who bought,
'According to scripture, my house shal be a house of prayer but you have turned it into a bandits'den.'46 saying to them: “It is written: ‘My house is a house of prayer.’ But you have made it into a den of robbers.”
He taught in the Temple every day. The chief priests and the scribes, in company with the leadingcitizens, tried to do away with him,47 And he was teaching in the temple daily. And the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, and the leaders of the people were seeking to destroy him.
but they could not find a way to carry this out because the whole people hung on his words.48 But they could not find what to do to him. For all the people were listening to him attentively.
