1 He entered Jericho and was going through the town	1 Ed entrato in Gerico, attraversava la città.
2 and suddenly a man whose name was Zacchaeus made his appearance; he was one of the senior taxcol ectors and a wealthy man.	2 Quand'ecco un uomo, chiamate Zaccheo, che era capo dei pubblicani e ricco,
3 He kept trying to see which Jesus was, but he was too short and could not see him for the crowd;	3 cercava di conoscere di vista Gesù, ma non ci riusciva, essendo piccolo di statura.
4 so he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus who was to pass that way.	4 Allora corse avanti e montò su un sicomoro per vederlo, chè doveva passare di lì.
5 When Jesus reached the spot he looked up and spoke to him, 'Zacchaeus, come down. Hurry,because I am to stay at your house today.'	5 E quando Gesù arrivò in quel luogo, alzati gli occhi, lo vide e gli disse: Zaccheo, presto, scendi; perchè oggi debbo fermarmi in casa tua.
6 And he hurried down and welcomed him joyful y.	6 Ed egli scese in fretta e lo accolse con gioia.
7 They al complained when they saw what was happening. 'He has gone to stay at a sinner's house,'they said.	7 E veduto ciò, tutti mormoravano, dicendo: E' andato ad albergare da un peccatore.
8 But Zacchaeus stood his ground and said to the Lord, 'Look, sir, I am going to give half my property tothe poor, and if I have cheated anybody I wil pay him back four times the amount.'	8 Ma Zaccheo, presentatosi al Signore, gli disse: Ecco, la metà dei miei beni, Signore, la dò ai poveri, e se ho frodato qualcuno, gli rendo il quadruplo.
9 And Jesus said to him, 'Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son ofAbraham;	9 E Gesù disse: Oggi in questa casa è venuta la salvezza, perchè lui pure è figlio di Abramo.
10 for the Son of man has come to seek out and save what was lost.'	10 Infatti il Figlio dell'uomo è venuto a cercare e salvare ciò che era perduto.
11 While the people were listening to this he went on to tel a parable, because he was near Jerusalemand they thought that the kingdom of God was going to show itself then and there.	11 Or mentre ascoltavano essi queste cose, Gesù aggiunse una parabola, e perchè era vicino a Gerusalemme, e perchè stimavano che presto dovesse manifestarsi il regno di Dio.
12 Accordingly he said, 'A man of noble birth went to a distant country to be appointed king and thenreturn.	12 Disse adunque: Un nobile uomo andò in lontano paese per prendere possesso di un regno, e poi ritornare.
13 He summoned ten of his servants and gave them ten pounds, tel ing them, "Trade with these, until Iget back."	13 Or, chiamati a sè dieci dei suoi servi, diede loro dieci mine, dicendo: Negoziatele fino al mio ritorno.
14 But his compatriots detested him and sent a delegation to fol ow him with this message, "We do notwant this man to be our king."	14 Ma i suoi concittadini gli volevano male, e gli spedirono dietro un'ambascia­ta per dirgli: Non vogliamo che costui regni su noi.
15 'Now it happened that on his return, having received his appointment as king, he sent for thoseservants to whom he had given the money, to find out what profit each had made by trading.	15 Ed avvenne che, tornato, dopo aver preso il regno fece chiamare i servi ai quali aveva dato il danaro per sapere quanto ciascuno, trafficando, avesse guadagnato.
16 The first came in, "Sir," he said, "your one pound has brought in ten."	16 E il primo venne a dire: Signore, la tua mina ne ha fruttate altre dieci.
17 He replied, "Wel done, my good servant! Since you have proved yourself trustworthy in a very smalthing, you shal have the government of ten cities."	17 Ed egli disse: Bravo, servo fedele, perchè sei stato fedele nel pooo avrai potere su dieci città.
18 Then came the second, "Sir," he said, "your one pound has made five."	18 Poi venne il secondo e disse: Signore, la tua mina ne ha fruttate cinque.
19 To this one also he said, "And you shal be in charge of five cities."	19 E rispose anche a questo: Anche tu comanda a cinque città,
20 Next came the other, "Sir," he said, "here is your pound. I put it away safely wrapped up in a cloth	20 poi venne un altro a dirgli: Signore, eccoti la tua mina che ho tenuta involta in una pezzuola;
21 because I was afraid of you; for you are an exacting man: you gather in what you have not laid outand reap what you have not sown."	21 perchè ho avuto paura di te che sei uomo duro; prendi quello che non hai messo e mieti quello che non hai seminato.
22 He said to him, "You wicked servant! Out of your own mouth I condemn you. So you knew that I wasan exacting man, gathering in what I have not laid out and reaping what I have not sown?	22 E il padrone a lui: Dalla tua bocca ti giudico, servo iniquo! Sapevi che sono uomo severo, che prendo quel che non ho messo, e mieto quello che non ho seminato;
23 Then why did you not put my money in the bank? On my return I could have drawn it out withinterest."	23 e perchè allora non hai messo il mio danaro alla banca: ed io al ritorno, lo avrei trovato coi frutti?
24 And he said to those standing by, "Take the pound from him and give it to the man who has tenpounds."	24 E disse agli astanti: Toglietegli la mina e datela a colui che ne ha dieci.
25 And they said to him, "But, sir, he has ten pounds . . ."	25 Ma gli fecero osservare: Signore, ne ha dieci.
26 "I tel you, to everyone who has wil be given more; but anyone who has not wil be deprived even ofwhat he has.	26 Ed io vi diro: a chi ha, sarà dato e sarà nell'abbondanza, e a chi non ha, sarà tolto anche quello che ha.
27 "As for my enemies who did not want me for their king, bring them here and execute them in mypresence." '	27 In quanto poi a quei miei nemici che non mi vollero per loro re, conduceteli qua, ed uccideteli alla mia presenza.
28 When he had said this he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.	28 E dette tali cose, Gesù seguitò innanzi agli altri, verso Gerusalemme.
29 Now it happened that when he was near Bethphage and Bethany, close by the Mount of Olives as itis cal ed, he sent two of the disciples, saying,	29 E arrivato che fu a Betfage e a Befania, presso il monte detto degli Ulivi, mandò due dei suoi discepoli,
30 'Go to the vil age opposite, and as you enter it you wil find a tethered colt that no one has ever yetridden. Untie it and bring it here.	30 dicendo loro: Andate nel villaggio di faccia, dove, entrando, troverete legato un asinello, sul quale nessuno è mai montato: scioglietelo e menatolo a me.
31 If anyone asks you, "Why are you untying it?" you are to say this, "The Master needs it." '	31 E se qualcuno vi domanda perchè lo sciogliete, così gli direte: Il Signore ne ha bisogno.
32 The messengers went off and found everything just as he had told them.	32 Gli inviati andarono e trovarono il puledro fermo, come aveva loro detto.
33 As they were untying the colt, its owners said, 'Why are you untying it?'	33 E mentre essi scioglievano l'asinello, i padroni dissero loro: Perchè sciogliete il puledro?
34 and they answered, 'The Master needs it.'	34 E quelli risposero: Perchè il Signore ne ha bisogno.
35 So they took the colt to Jesus and, throwing their cloaks on its back, they lifted Jesus on to it.	35 E lo menarono a Gesù, e gettate le vesti sull'asinello, ci fecero montare Gesù.
36 As he moved off, they spread their cloaks in the road,	36 E mentre egli procedeva, la gente stendeva ì proprii mantelli nella strada.
37 and now, as he was approaching the downward slope of the Mount of Olives, the whole group ofdisciples joyful y began to praise God at the top of their voices for all the miracles they had seen.	37 Quando poi fu vicino alla scesa del monte Oliveto, tutta la turba dei discepoli anelò con letizia a lodar Dio ad alta voce per tutti i prodigi che avevan veduti,
38 They cried out: Blessed is he who is coming as King in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven andglory in the highest heavens!	38 e dicevano: Benedetto il re che viene nel nome del Signore; pace in cielo e gloria negli altissimi.
39 Some Pharisees in the crowd said to him, 'Master, reprove your disciples,'	39 Ed alcuni Farisei di tra la folla gli dissero: Maestro, sgrida tuoi discepoli.
40 but he answered, 'I tell you, if these keep silence, the stones wil cry out.'	40 Ma egli rispose: V'assicuro che, se taceranno loro, grideranno le pietre.
41 As he drew near and came in sight of the city he shed tears over it	41 E come fu vicino alla città, al vederla, pianse su di lei, e disse:
42 and said, 'If you too had only recognised on this day the way to peace! But in fact it is hidden fromyour eyes!	42 O se conoscessi anche tu, e proprio in questo giorno, quel che giova alla tua pace! Ora invece è celato agli occhi tuoi.
43 Yes, a time is coming when your enemies wil raise fortifications all round you, when they wil encircleyou and hem you in on every side;	43 Che verranno per te i giorni nei quali i nemici ti stringeranno con trincee, ti chiuderanno e ti stringeranno da ogni parte;
44 they wil dash you and the children inside your wal s to the ground; they wil leave not one stonestanding on another within you, because you did not recognise the moment of your visitation.'	44 e distruggeranno te e i tuoi figli che sono in te, e non lasceranno in te pietra sopra pietra, perchè non hai riconosciuto il tempo in cui sei stata visitata.
45 Then he went into the Temple and began driving out those who were busy trading, saying to them,	45 Poi, entrato nel tempio, cominciò a scacciare coloro che vi vendevano e vi compravano, dicendo loro:
46 'According to scripture, my house shal be a house of prayer but you have turned it into a bandits'den.'	46 Sta scritto: La mia casa è casa di preghiera; ma voi ne avete fatto una spelonca di ladri.
47 He taught in the Temple every day. The chief priests and the scribes, in company with the leadingcitizens, tried to do away with him,	47 Ed ogni giorno insegnava nel tempio. Ma i principi dei sacerdoti e gli Scribi ed i capi del popolo cercavano di farlo morire;
48 but they could not find a way to carry this out because the whole people hung on his words.	48 e non sapevano che fargli perchè tutto il popolo stava sospeso ad ascoltarlo.
