Luke 19

NEW JERUSALEM	LXX
1 He entered Jericho and was going through the town	1 Καὶ εἰσελθὼν διήρχετο τὴν Ἰεριχώ.
2 and suddenly a man whose name was Zacchaeus made his appearance; he was one of the senior taxcol ectors and a wealthy man.	2 Καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀνὴρ ὀνόματι καλούμενος Ζακχαῖος, καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν ἀρχιτελώνης καὶ αὐτὸς πλούσιος·
3 He kept trying to see which Jesus was, but he was too short and could not see him for the crowd;	3 καὶ ἐζήτει ἰδεῖν τὸν Ἰησοῦν τίς ἐστιν καὶ οὐκ ἠδύνατο ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄχλου, ὅτι τῇ ἡλικίᾳ μικρὸς ἦν.
4 so he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus who was to pass that way.	4 καὶ προδραμὼν εἰς τὸ ἔμπροσθεν ἀνέβη ἐπὶ συκομορέαν ἵνα ἴδῃ αὐτὸν ὅτι ἐκείνης ἤμελλεν διέρχεσθαι.
5 When Jesus reached the spot he looked up and spoke to him, 'Zacchaeus, come down. Hurry,because I am to stay at your house today.'	5 καὶ ὡς ἦλθεν ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον, ἀναβλέψας ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν· Ζακχαῖε, σπεύσας κατάβηθι, σήμερον γὰρ ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ σου δεῖ με μεῖναι.
6 And he hurried down and welcomed him joyful y.	6 καὶ σπεύσας κατέβη καὶ ὑπεδέξατο αὐτὸν χαίρων.
7 They al complained when they saw what was happening. 'He has gone to stay at a sinner's house,'they said.	7 καὶ ἰδόντες πάντες διεγόγγυζον λέγοντες ὅτι παρὰ ἁμαρτωλῷ ἀνδρὶ εἰσῆλθεν καταλῦσαι.
8 But Zacchaeus stood his ground and said to the Lord, 'Look, sir, I am going to give half my property tothe poor, and if I have cheated anybody I wil pay him back four times the amount.'	8 σταθεὶς δὲ Ζακχαῖος εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν κύριον· ἰδοὺ τὰ ἡμίσιά μου τῶν ὑπαρχόντων, κύριε, τοῖς πτωχοῖς δίδωμι, καὶ εἴ τινός τι ἐσυκοφάντησα ἀποδίδωμι τετραπλοῦν.
9 And Jesus said to him, 'Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son ofAbraham;	9 εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι σήμερον σωτηρία τῷ οἴκῳ τούτῳ ἐγένετο, καθότι καὶ αὐτὸς υἱὸς Ἀβραάμ ἐστιν·
10 for the Son of man has come to seek out and save what was lost.'	10 ἦλθεν γὰρ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ζητῆσαι καὶ σῶσαι τὸ ἀπολωλός.
11 While the people were listening to this he went on to tel a parable, because he was near Jerusalemand they thought that the kingdom of God was going to show itself then and there.	11 Ἀκουόντων δὲ αὐτῶν ταῦτα προσθεὶς εἶπεν παραβολὴν διὰ τὸ ἐγγὺς εἶναι Ἰερουσαλὴμ αὐτὸν καὶ δοκεῖν αὐτοὺς ὅτι παραχρῆμα μέλλει ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ ἀναφαίνεσθαι.
12 Accordingly he said, 'A man of noble birth went to a distant country to be appointed king and thenreturn.	12 εἶπεν οὖν· ἄνθρωπός τις εὐγενὴς ἐπορεύθη εἰς χώραν μακρὰν λαβεῖν ἑαυτῷ βασιλείαν καὶ ὑποστρέψαι.
13 He summoned ten of his servants and gave them ten pounds, tel ing them, "Trade with these, until Iget back."	13 καλέσας δὲ δέκα δούλους ἑαυτοῦ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς δέκα μνᾶς καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· πραγματεύσασθε ἐν ᾧ ἔρχομαι.
14 But his compatriots detested him and sent a delegation to fol ow him with this message, "We do notwant this man to be our king."	14 οἱ δὲ πολῖται αὐτοῦ ἐμίσουν αὐτὸν καὶ ἀπέστειλαν πρεσβείαν ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ λέγοντες· οὐ θέλομεν τοῦτον βασιλεῦσαι ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς.
15 'Now it happened that on his return, having received his appointment as king, he sent for thoseservants to whom he had given the money, to find out what profit each had made by trading.	15 Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἐπανελθεῖν αὐτὸν λαβόντα τὴν βασιλείαν καὶ εἶπεν φωνηθῆναι αὐτῷ τοὺς δούλους τούτους οἷς δεδώκει τὸ ἀργύριον, ἵνα γνοῖ τί διεπραγματεύσαντο.
16 The first came in, "Sir," he said, "your one pound has brought in ten."	16 παρεγένετο δὲ ὁ πρῶτος λέγων· κύριε, ἡ μνᾶ σου δέκα προσηργάσατο μνᾶς.
17 He replied, "Wel done, my good servant! Since you have proved yourself trustworthy in a very smalthing, you shal have the government of ten cities."	17 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· εὖγε, ἀγαθὲ δοῦλε, ὅτι ἐν ἐλαχίστῳ πιστὸς ἐγένου, ἴσθι ἐξουσίαν ἔχων ἐπάνω δέκα πόλεων.
18 Then came the second, "Sir," he said, "your one pound has made five."	18 καὶ ἦλθεν ὁ δεύτερος λέγων· ἡ μνᾶ σου, κύριε, ἐποίησεν πέντε μνᾶς.
19 To this one also he said, "And you shal be in charge of five cities."	19 εἶπεν δὲ καὶ τούτῳ· καὶ σὺ ἐπάνω γίνου πέντε πόλεων.
20 Next came the other, "Sir," he said, "here is your pound. I put it away safely wrapped up in a cloth	20 καὶ ὁ ἕτερος ἦλθεν λέγων· κύριε, ἰδοὺ ἡ μνᾶ σου ἣν εἶχον ἀποκειμένην ἐν σουδαρίῳ·
21 because I was afraid of you; for you are an exacting man: you gather in what you have not laid outand reap what you have not sown."	21 ἐφοβούμην γάρ σε, ὅτι ἄνθρωπος αὐστηρὸς εἶ, αἴρεις ὃ οὐκ ἔθηκας καὶ θερίζεις ὃ οὐκ ἔσπειρας.
22 He said to him, "You wicked servant! Out of your own mouth I condemn you. So you knew that I wasan exacting man, gathering in what I have not laid out and reaping what I have not sown?	22 λέγει αὐτῷ· ἐκ τοῦ στόματός σου κρινῶ σε, πονηρὲ δοῦλε. ᾔδεις ὅτι ἐγὼ ἄνθρωπος αὐστηρός εἰμι, αἴρων ὃ οὐκ ἔθηκα καὶ θερίζων ὃ οὐκ ἔσπειρα;
23 Then why did you not put my money in the bank? On my return I could have drawn it out withinterest."	23 καὶ διὰ τί οὐκ ἔδωκάς μου τὸ ἀργύριον ἐπὶ τράπεζαν; κἀγὼ ἐλθὼν σὺν τόκῳ ἂν αὐτὸ ἔπραξα.
24 And he said to those standing by, "Take the pound from him and give it to the man who has tenpounds."	24 καὶ τοῖς παρεστῶσιν εἶπεν· ἄρατε ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ τὴν μνᾶν καὶ δότε τῷ τὰς δέκα μνᾶς ἔχοντι –
25 And they said to him, "But, sir, he has ten pounds . . ."	25 καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ· κύριε, ἔχει δέκα μνᾶς –
26 "I tel you, to everyone who has wil be given more; but anyone who has not wil be deprived even ofwhat he has.	26 λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι παντὶ τῷ ἔχοντι δοθήσεται, ἀπὸ δὲ τοῦ μὴ ἔχοντος καὶ ὃ ἔχει ἀρθήσεται.
27 "As for my enemies who did not want me for their king, bring them here and execute them in mypresence." '	27 πλὴν τοὺς ἐχθρούς μου τούτους τοὺς μὴ θελήσαντάς με βασιλεῦσαι ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς ἀγάγετε ὧδε καὶ κατασφάξατε αὐτοὺς ἔμπροσθέν μου.
28 When he had said this he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.	28 Καὶ εἰπὼν ταῦτα ἐπορεύετο ἔμπροσθεν ἀναβαίνων εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα.
29 Now it happened that when he was near Bethphage and Bethany, close by the Mount of Olives as itis cal ed, he sent two of the disciples, saying,	29 Καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἤγγισεν εἰς Βηθφαγὴ καὶ Βηθανία[ν] πρὸς τὸ ὄρος τὸ καλούμενον Ἐλαιῶν, ἀπέστειλεν δύο τῶν μαθητῶν
30 'Go to the vil age opposite, and as you enter it you wil find a tethered colt that no one has ever yetridden. Untie it and bring it here.	30 λέγων· ὑπάγετε εἰς τὴν κατέναντι κώμην, ἐν ᾗ εἰσπορευόμενοι εὑρήσετε πῶλον δεδεμένον, ἐφ’ ὃν οὐδεὶς πώποτε ἀνθρώπων ἐκάθισεν, καὶ λύσαντες αὐτὸν ἀγάγετε.
31 If anyone asks you, "Why are you untying it?" you are to say this, "The Master needs it." '	31 καὶ ἐάν τις ὑμᾶς ἐρωτᾷ· διὰ τί λύετε; οὕτως ἐρεῖτε· ὅτι ὁ κύριος αὐτοῦ χρείαν ἔχει.
32 The messengers went off and found everything just as he had told them.	32 Ἀπελθόντες δὲ οἱ ἀπεσταλμένοι εὗρον καθὼς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς.
33 As they were untying the colt, its owners said, 'Why are you untying it?'	33 λυόντων δὲ αὐτῶν τὸν πῶλον εἶπαν οἱ κύριοι αὐτοῦ πρὸς αὐτούς· τί λύετε τὸν πῶλον;
34 and they answered, 'The Master needs it.'	34 οἱ δὲ εἶπαν· ὅτι ὁ κύριος αὐτοῦ χρείαν ἔχει.
35 So they took the colt to Jesus and, throwing their cloaks on its back, they lifted Jesus on to it.	35 καὶ ἤγαγον αὐτὸν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἐπιρίψαντες αὐτῶν τὰ ἱμάτια ἐπὶ τὸν πῶλον ἐπεβίβασαν τὸν Ἰησοῦν.
36 As he moved off, they spread their cloaks in the road,	36 πορευομένου δὲ αὐτοῦ ὑπεστρώννυον τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτῶν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ.
37 and now, as he was approaching the downward slope of the Mount of Olives, the whole group ofdisciples joyful y began to praise God at the top of their voices for all the miracles they had seen.	37 Ἐγγίζοντος δὲ αὐτοῦ ἤδη πρὸς τῇ καταβάσει τοῦ ὄρους τῶν ἐλαιῶν ἤρξαντο ἅπαν τὸ πλῆθος τῶν μαθητῶν χαίροντες αἰνεῖν τὸν θεὸν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ περὶ πασῶν ὧν εἶδον δυνάμεων,
38 They cried out: Blessed is he who is coming as King in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven andglory in the highest heavens!	38 λέγοντες· εὐλογημένος ὁ ἐρχόμενος, ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐν ὀνόματι κυρίου· ἐν οὐρανῷ εἰρήνη καὶ δόξα ἐν ὑψίστοις.
39 Some Pharisees in the crowd said to him, 'Master, reprove your disciples,'	39 καί τινες τῶν Φαρισαίων ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄχλου εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν· διδάσκαλε, ἐπιτίμησον τοῖς μαθηταῖς σου.
40 but he answered, 'I tell you, if these keep silence, the stones wil cry out.'	40 καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν· λέγω ὑμῖν, ἐὰν οὗτοι σιωπήσουσιν, οἱ λίθοι κράξουσιν.
41 As he drew near and came in sight of the city he shed tears over it	41 Καὶ ὡς ἤγγισεν ἰδὼν τὴν πόλιν ἔκλαυσεν ἐπ’ αὐτὴν
42 and said, 'If you too had only recognised on this day the way to peace! But in fact it is hidden fromyour eyes!	42 λέγων ὅτι εἰ ἔγνως ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ καὶ σὺ τὰ πρὸς εἰρήνην· νῦν δὲ ἐκρύβη ἀπὸ ὀφθαλμῶν σου.
43 Yes, a time is coming when your enemies wil raise fortifications all round you, when they wil encircleyou and hem you in on every side;	43 ὅτι ἥξουσιν ἡμέραι ἐπὶ σὲ καὶ παρεμβαλοῦσιν οἱ ἐχθροί σου χάρακά σοι καὶ περικυκλώσουσίν σε καὶ συνέξουσίν σε πάντοθεν,
44 they wil dash you and the children inside your wal s to the ground; they wil leave not one stonestanding on another within you, because you did not recognise the moment of your visitation.'	44 καὶ ἐδαφιοῦσίν σε καὶ τὰ τέκνα σου ἐν σοί, καὶ οὐκ ἀφήσουσιν λίθον ἐπὶ λίθον ἐν σοί, ἀνθ’ ὧν οὐκ ἔγνως τὸν καιρὸν τῆς ἐπισκοπῆς σου.
45 Then he went into the Temple and began driving out those who were busy trading, saying to them,	45 Καὶ εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν ἤρξατο ἐκβάλλειν τοὺς πωλοῦντας
46 'According to scripture, my house shal be a house of prayer but you have turned it into a bandits'den.'	46 λέγων αὐτοῖς· γέγραπται· καὶ ἔσται ὁ οἶκός μου οἶκος προσευχῆς, ὑμεῖς δὲ αὐτὸν ἐποιήσατε σπήλαιον λῃστῶν.
47 He taught in the Temple every day. The chief priests and the scribes, in company with the leadingcitizens, tried to do away with him,	47 Καὶ ἦν διδάσκων τὸ καθ’ ἡμέραν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ. οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν ἀπολέσαι καὶ οἱ πρῶτοι τοῦ λαοῦ,
48 but they could not find a way to carry this out because the whole people hung on his words.	48 καὶ οὐχ εὕρισκον τὸ τί ποιήσωσιν, ὁ λαὸς γὰρ ἅπας ἐξεκρέματο αὐτοῦ ἀκούων.
