1 I am the man familiar with misery under the rod of his fury.	1 ALEPH. Uom son io, che conosco la mia miseria sotto la verga dell'ira di lui.
2 He has led and guided me into darkness, not light.	2 ALEPH. Tra le tenebre mi ha condotto, e non al chiaror della luce.
3 Against none but me does he turn his hand, again and again, al day.	3 ALEPH. Non ha fatt'altro, che percuotermi, e ripercuotermi tutto giorno colla sua mano.
4 He has wasted my flesh and skin away, has broken my bones.	4 BETH. Ha fatta invecchiar la mia pelle, e la mia carne, ha stritolate le ossa mie.
5 He has besieged me and made hardship a circlet round my head.	5 BETH. Ha alzato un muro intorno a me, e mi ha circondato di amarezze, e di affanni.
6 He has forced me to dwel where al is dark, like those long-dead in their everlasting home.	6 BETH. Mi collocò in luoghi tenebrosi, come que', che son morti per sempre.
7 He has walled me in so that I cannot escape; he has weighed me down with chains;	7 GHIMEL. Mi serrò con ripari all'intorno, perch' io non ne esca: aggravò i miei ceppi.
8 even when I shout for help, he shuts out my prayer.	8 GHIMEL. Ed oltre a ciò, quand'io alzi le grida, e lo preghi, ha chiuso il varco alla mia orazione.
9 He has closed my way with blocks of stone, he has obstructed my paths.	9 GHIMEL. Mi ha chiuse le strade con pietre quadrate: ha ruinati i miei sentieri.
10 For me he is a lurking bear, a lion in hiding.	10 DALETH. Egli è divenuto per me qual orso, che sta in aguato: come lione in luogo rimoto.
11 Heading me off, he has torn me apart, leaving me shattered.	11 DALETH. Egli ha rumati i miei sentieri, e mi ha straziato, mi ha abbandonato alla desolazione.
12 He has bent his bow and used me as a target for his arrows.	12 DALETH. Egli tese il suo arco, e mi fè come segno agli strali.
13 He has shot deep into me with shafts from his quiver.	13 HE. Ne' miei reni ha confitte le frecce del suo turcasso.
14 I have become a joke to al my own people, their refrain all day long.	14 HE. Son divenuto il ludìbrio di tutto il mio popolo; la lor canzone per tutto il giorno.
15 He has given me my fil of bitterness, he has made me drunk with wormwood.	15 HE. Mi ha ripieno di amarezza, mi ha inebriato di assenzio.

19 Bring to mind my misery and anguish; it is wormwood and gall!	19 ZAIN. Ricorditi della miseria, miseria mia eccedente, e dell'assenzio, e del fiele.
20 My heart dwel s on this continual y and sinks within me.	20 ZAIN. Queste cose ho di continuo alla memoria, e si strugge l'anima mia dentro di me.
21 This is what I shal keep in mind and so regain some hope:	21 ZAIN. Queste cose riandando in cuor mio, per questo io spererò.
22 Surely Yahweh's mercies are not over, his deeds of faithful love not exhausted;	22 HETH. Misericordia del Signore ell'è, che noi non siamo consunti: perchè non son mai venute meno le sue misericordie.
23 every morning they are renewed; great is his faithfulness!	23 HETH. Delle nuove ne sono ogni mattina: grandemente fedele se' tu.
24 'Yahweh is al I have,' I say to myself, 'and so I shal put my hope in him.'	24 HETH. Mia porzione è il Signore, disse l'anima mia: per questo io lo aspetterò.
25 Yahweh is good to those who trust him, to al who search for him.	25 TETH. Buono è il Signore a que', che sperano in lui, all'anima, che lo cerca.
26 It is good to wait in silence for Yahweh to save.	26 TETH. Buona cosa è l'aspettare in silenzio la salute di Dio.
27 It is good for someone to bear the yoke from a young age,	27 TETH. Buona cosa è per l'uomo l'aver portato il giogo fin dalla sua adolescenza.
28 to sit in solitude and silence when it weighs heavy,	28 JOD. Ei sederà solitario, e si tacerà, perch'egli il giogo ha preso sopra di se.
29 to lay one's head in the dust -- maybe there is hope-	29 JOD. Porrà la bocca sua nella polvere (cercando) se a sorte siavi speranza.
30 to offer one's cheek to the striker, to have one's fil of disgrace!	30 JOD. Porgerà la guancia a chi lo percuote: sarà satollato d'ignominie.
31 For the Lord will not reject anyone for ever.	31 CAPH. Perocché non per sempre rigetterà da se il Signore.
32 If he brings grief, he wil have pity out of the ful ness of his faithful love,	32 CAPH. Perocché se egli ci ha rigettati, avrà anche pietà secondo le molte sue misericordie.
33 for it is not for his own pleasure that he torments and grieves the human race.	33 CAPH. Perocché non di sua elezione egli umilia, e rigetta i figliuoli degli uomini,
34 When al the prisoners in a country are crushed underfoot,	34 LAMED. Ma per calpestare sotto i suoi piedi tutti gli schiavi della terra,
35 when human rights are overridden in defiance of the Most High,	35 LAMED. Pesare con non giusta bilancia la causa d'un uomo nel suo cospetto.
36 when someone is cheated of justice, does not the Lord see it?	36 LAMED. Ledere ingiustamente un uomo nel suo giudizio: ciò non sa fare il Signore.
37 Who has only to speak and it is so done? Who commands, if not the Lord?	37 MEM. Chi è colui, che ha detto, che si facesse una cosa, senza che il Signore la comandasse?
38 From where, if not from the mouth of the Most High, do evil and good come?	38 MEM. Non verran eglino dalla bocca del Signore i beni, ed i mali?
39 Why then should anyone complain? Better to be bold against one's sins.	39 MEM. Perchè mai uomo vivente querelavasi dell'effetto de' suoi peccati?
40 Let us examine our path, let us ponder it and return to Yahweh.	40 NUN. Disaminiamo, e facciam ricerca de' nostri andamenti, e torniamo al Signore.
41 Let us raise our hearts and hands to God in heaven.	41 NUN. Alziamo al cielo insiem colle mani i cuori nostri al Signore.
42 We are the ones who have sinned, who have rebel ed, and you have not forgiven.	42 NUN. Noi iniquamente ci diportammo, e ti provocammo ad ira: per questo tu se' inesorabile.
43 You have enveloped us in anger, pursuing us, slaughtering without pity.	43 SAMECH. Tu ti cuopristi col tuo furore, e ci percuotesti: tu uccidesti, e non perdonasti.
44 You have wrapped yourself in a cloud too thick for prayer to pierce.	44 SAMECH. Ti ponesti davanti una nuvola, perchè non arrivasse a te l'orazione.
45 You have reduced us to rubbish and refuse among the nations.	45 SAMECH. Tu mi hai diradicato, e gettato per terra sulla faccia di tutti i popoli.
46 Our enemies open their mouths in chorus against us.	46 PHE. Tutti i nemici hanno aperta la loro bocca contro di noi.
47 Terror and pitfal have been our lot, ravage and ruin.	47 PHE. La profezia fu per noi terrore, e laccio, e rovina.
48 My eyes dissolve in torrents of tears at the ruin of my beloved people.	48 PHE. Rivi di acque spargono gli occhi miei sopra l'afflizione della figliuola del popol mio.
49 My eyes wil weep ceaselessly, without relief,	49 AIN. Il mio occhio è afflitto, né si dà posa, perchè requie alcuna non è,
50 until Yahweh looks down and sees from heaven.	50 AIN. Fino a tanto che il Signore volga l'occhio dal cielo, e rimiri.
51 My eyes have grown sore over al the daughters of my city.	51 AIN. L'occhio mio è stato nemico della mia vita, in piangendo le figlie tutte della mia patria.
52 Unprovoked, my enemies hunted me down like a bird.	52 SADE. Come uccello alla caccia mi presero i miei nemici senza mia colpa.
53 They shut me final y in a pit, they closed me in with a stone.	53 SADE. E caduta l'anima mia nella fossa: hanno posta una pietra sopra di me.
54 The waters rose over my head; I thought, 'I am lost!'	54 SADE. Un diluvio di acque si è scaricato sulla mia testa: io dissi: Son perduto
55 Yahweh, I called on your name from the deep pit.	55 COPH. Invocai il nome tuo o Signore,dalla fossa profonda.
56 You heard my voice, do not close your ear to my prayer, to my cry.	56 COPH. Tu ascoltasti la voce mia; or non chiuder le orecchie tue a' mie singulti, e a' miei clamori.
57 You are near when I cal to you. You said, 'Do not be afraid!'	57 COPH. Tu ti appressasti nel giorno, ch'io ti invocai: dicesti: Non temere.
58 Lord, you defended my cause, you have redeemed my life.	58 RES. Tu pronunziasti in favore dell'anima mia, o redentore della mia vita.
59 Yahweh, you have seen the wrong done to me, grant me redress.	59 RES. Tu hai veduto, o Signore, l'iniquità loro inverso di me: fammi giustizia.
60 You have seen their vindictiveness, al their plots against me.	60 RES. Tu vedesti i lor furori, e tutti i loro disegni contro di me.
61 You have heard their insults, Yahweh, al their plots against me,	61 SIN. Tu udisti, o Signore, le lor villanie, e i lor pensieri contro di me;
62 the whispering and murmuring of my enemies against me all day long.	62 SIN. E le parole di color, che mi fanno guerra, e quel, ch'ei meditan tutto giorno contro di me.
63 Look, whether they sit or stand, I am their refrain.	63 SIN. Osserva come andando essi, e venendo, io sono la loro canzone.
64 Yahweh, repay them as their deeds deserve.	64 THAU. Tu renderai loro, o Signore, se condo le opere delle lor mani.
65 Lay hardness of heart as your curse on them.	65 THAU. Tu porrai sopra il cuor loro per iscudo gli attuimi, che lor manderai.
66 Angrily pursue them, root them out from under your heavens!	66 THAU. Li perseguiterai col furor tuo, e lispergerai di sotto al cieli, o Signore.
