1 I am the man familiar with misery under the rod of his fury.	1 (Aleph)Ego vir videns paupertatem meam in virga indignationis ejus.
2 He has led and guided me into darkness, not light.	2 (Aleph)Me minavit, et adduxit in tenebras, et non in lucem.
3 Against none but me does he turn his hand, again and again, al day.	3 (Aleph)Tantum in me vertit et convertit manum suam tota die.
4 He has wasted my flesh and skin away, has broken my bones.	4 (Beth)Vetustam fecit pellem meam et carnem meam ; contrivit ossa mea.
5 He has besieged me and made hardship a circlet round my head.	5 (Beth)Ædificavit in gyro meo, et circumdedit me felle et labore.
6 He has forced me to dwel where al is dark, like those long-dead in their everlasting home.	6 (Beth)In tenebrosis collocavit me, quasi mortuos sempiternos.

15 He has given me my fil of bitterness, he has made me drunk with wormwood.	15 (He)Replevit me amaritudinibus ; inebriavit me absinthio.

19 Bring to mind my misery and anguish; it is wormwood and gall!	19 (Zain)Recordare paupertatis, et transgressionis meæ, absinthii et fellis.
20 My heart dwel s on this continual y and sinks within me.	20 (Zain)Memoria memor ero, et tabescet in me anima mea.
21 This is what I shal keep in mind and so regain some hope:	21 (Zain)Hæc recolens in corde meo, ideo sperabo.
22 Surely Yahweh's mercies are not over, his deeds of faithful love not exhausted;	22 (Heth)Misericordiæ Domini, quia non sumus consumpti ; quia non defecerunt miserationes ejus.
23 every morning they are renewed; great is his faithfulness!	23 (Heth)Novi diluculo, multa est fides tua.
24 'Yahweh is al I have,' I say to myself, 'and so I shal put my hope in him.'	24 (Heth)Pars mea Dominus, dixit anima mea ; propterea exspectabo eum.
25 Yahweh is good to those who trust him, to al who search for him.	25 (Teth)Bonus est Dominus sperantibus in eum, animæ quærenti illum.
26 It is good to wait in silence for Yahweh to save.	26 (Teth)Bonum est præstolari cum silentio salutare Dei.
27 It is good for someone to bear the yoke from a young age,	27 (Teth)Bonum est viro cum portaverit jugum ab adolescentia sua.
28 to sit in solitude and silence when it weighs heavy,	28 (Jod)Sedebit solitarius, et tacebit, quia levavit super se.
29 to lay one's head in the dust -- maybe there is hope-	29 (Jod)Ponet in pulvere os suum, si forte sit spes.
30 to offer one's cheek to the striker, to have one's fil of disgrace!	30 (Jod)Dabit percutienti se maxillam : saturabitur opprobriis.
31 For the Lord will not reject anyone for ever.	31 (Caph)Quia non repellet in sempiternum Dominus.
32 If he brings grief, he wil have pity out of the ful ness of his faithful love,	32 (Caph)Quia si abjecit, et miserebitur, secundum multitudinem misericordiarum suarum.
33 for it is not for his own pleasure that he torments and grieves the human race.	33 (Caph)Non enim humiliavit ex corde suo et abjecit filios hominum.
34 When al the prisoners in a country are crushed underfoot,	34 (Lamed)Ut conteret sub pedibus suis omnes vinctos terræ.
35 when human rights are overridden in defiance of the Most High,	35 (Lamed)Ut declinaret judicium viri in conspectu vultus Altissimi.
36 when someone is cheated of justice, does not the Lord see it?	36 (Lamed)Ut perverteret hominem in judicio suo ; Dominus ignoravit.
37 Who has only to speak and it is so done? Who commands, if not the Lord?	37 (Mem)Quis est iste qui dixit ut fieret, Domino non jubente ?
38 From where, if not from the mouth of the Most High, do evil and good come?	38 (Mem)Ex ore Altissimi non egredientur nec mala nec bona ?
39 Why then should anyone complain? Better to be bold against one's sins.	39 (Mem)Quid murmuravit homo vivens, vir pro peccatis suis ?
40 Let us examine our path, let us ponder it and return to Yahweh.	40 (Nun)Scrutemur vias nostras, et quæramus, et revertamur ad Dominum.
41 Let us raise our hearts and hands to God in heaven.	41 (Nun)Levemus corda nostra cum manibus ad Dominum in cælos.
42 We are the ones who have sinned, who have rebel ed, and you have not forgiven.	42 (Nun)Nos inique egimus, et ad iracundiam provocavimus ; idcirco tu inexorabilis es.
43 You have enveloped us in anger, pursuing us, slaughtering without pity.	43 (Samech)Operuisti in furore, et percussisti nos ; occidisti, nec pepercisti.

47 Terror and pitfal have been our lot, ravage and ruin.	47 (Phe)Formido et laqueus facta est nobis vaticinatio, et contritio.
48 My eyes dissolve in torrents of tears at the ruin of my beloved people.	48 (Phe)Divisiones aquarum deduxit oculus meus, in contritione filiæ populi mei.
49 My eyes wil weep ceaselessly, without relief,	49 (Ain)Oculus meus afflictus est, nec tacuit, eo quod non esset requies.
50 until Yahweh looks down and sees from heaven.	50 (Ain)Donec respiceret et videret Dominus de cælis.
51 My eyes have grown sore over al the daughters of my city.	51 (Ain)Oculus meus deprædatus est animam meam in cunctis filiabus urbis meæ.

59 Yahweh, you have seen the wrong done to me, grant me redress.	59 (Res)Vidisti, Domine, iniquitatem illorum adversum me : judica judicium meum.
60 You have seen their vindictiveness, al their plots against me.	60 (Res)Vidisti omnem furorem, universas cogitationes eorum adversum me.
61 You have heard their insults, Yahweh, al their plots against me,	61 (Sin)Audisti opprobrium eorum, Domine, omnes cogitationes eorum adversum me.
62 the whispering and murmuring of my enemies against me all day long.	62 (Sin)Labia insurgentium mihi, et meditationes eorum adversum me tota die.
63 Look, whether they sit or stand, I am their refrain.	63 (Sin)Sessionem eorum et resurrectionem eorum vide ; ego sum psalmus eorum.
64 Yahweh, repay them as their deeds deserve.	64 (Thau)Redes eis vicem, Domine, juxta opera manuum suarum.
65 Lay hardness of heart as your curse on them.	65 (Thau)Dabis eis scutum cordis, laborem tuum.
66 Angrily pursue them, root them out from under your heavens!	66 (Thau)Persequeris in furore, et conteres eos sub cælis, Domine.
