1 I am the man familiar with misery under the rod of his fury.	1 (Alef)Io sono l’uomo che ha provato la miseria sotto la sferza della sua ira.
2 He has led and guided me into darkness, not light.	2 (Alef) Egli mi ha guidato, mi ha fatto camminare nelle tenebre e non nella luce.
3 Against none but me does he turn his hand, again and again, al day.	3 (Alef) Sì, contro di me egli volge e rivolge la sua mano tutto il giorno.
4 He has wasted my flesh and skin away, has broken my bones.	4 (Bet) Egli ha consumato la mia carne e la mia pelle, ha rotto le mie ossa.
5 He has besieged me and made hardship a circlet round my head.	5 (Bet) Ha costruito sopra di me, mi ha circondato di veleno e di affanno.
6 He has forced me to dwel where al is dark, like those long-dead in their everlasting home.	6 (Bet) Mi ha fatto abitare in luoghi tenebrosi come i morti da gran tempo.
7 He has walled me in so that I cannot escape; he has weighed me down with chains;	7 (Ghimel)Mi ha costruito un muro tutt’intorno, non posso più uscire; ha reso pesanti le mie catene.
8 even when I shout for help, he shuts out my prayer.	8 (Ghimel) Anche se grido e invoco aiuto, egli soffoca la mia preghiera.
9 He has closed my way with blocks of stone, he has obstructed my paths.	9 (Ghimel) Ha sbarrato le mie vie con blocchi di pietra, ha ostruito i miei sentieri.
10 For me he is a lurking bear, a lion in hiding.	10 (Dalet) Era per me un orso in agguato, un leone in luoghi nascosti.
11 Heading me off, he has torn me apart, leaving me shattered.	11 (Dalet) Seminando di spine la mia via, mi ha lacerato, mi ha reso desolato.
12 He has bent his bow and used me as a target for his arrows.	12 (Dalet) Ha teso l’arco, mi ha posto come bersaglio alle sue saette.
13 He has shot deep into me with shafts from his quiver.	13 (He) Ha conficcato nei miei reni le frecce della sua faretra.
14 I have become a joke to al my own people, their refrain all day long.	14 (He) Sono diventato lo scherno di tutti i popoli, la loro beffarda canzone tutto il giorno.
15 He has given me my fil of bitterness, he has made me drunk with wormwood.	15 (He) Mi ha saziato con erbe amare, mi ha dissetato con assenzio.
16 He has broken my teeth with gravel, he has fed me on ashes.	16 (Vau) Ha spezzato i miei denti con la ghiaia, mi ha steso nella polvere.
17 I have been deprived of peace, I have forgotten what happiness is	17 (Vau) Sono rimasto lontano dalla pace, ho dimenticato il benessere.
18 and thought, 'My lasting hope in Yahweh is lost.'	18 (Vau) E dico: «È scomparsa la mia gloria, la speranza che mi veniva dal Signore».
19 Bring to mind my misery and anguish; it is wormwood and gall!	19 (Zain) Il ricordo della mia miseria e del mio vagare è come assenzio e veleno.
20 My heart dwel s on this continual y and sinks within me.	20 (Zain) Ben se ne ricorda la mia anima e si accascia dentro di me.
21 This is what I shal keep in mind and so regain some hope:	21 (Zain) Questo intendo richiamare al mio cuore, e per questo voglio riprendere speranza.
22 Surely Yahweh's mercies are not over, his deeds of faithful love not exhausted;	22 (Het) Le grazie del Signore non sono finite, non sono esaurite le sue misericordie.
23 every morning they are renewed; great is his faithfulness!	23 (Het) Si rinnovano ogni mattina, grande è la sua fedeltà.
24 'Yahweh is al I have,' I say to myself, 'and so I shal put my hope in him.'	24 (Het) «Mia parte è il Signore – io esclamo –, per questo in lui spero».
25 Yahweh is good to those who trust him, to al who search for him.	25 (Tet) Buono è il Signore con chi spera in lui, con colui che lo cerca.
26 It is good to wait in silence for Yahweh to save.	26 (Tet) È bene aspettare in silenzio la salvezza del Signore.
27 It is good for someone to bear the yoke from a young age,	27 (Tet) È bene per l’uomo portare un giogo nella sua giovinezza.
28 to sit in solitude and silence when it weighs heavy,	28 (Iod)Sieda costui solitario e resti in silenzio, poiché egli glielo impone.
29 to lay one's head in the dust -- maybe there is hope-	29 (Iod)Ponga nella polvere la bocca, forse c’è ancora speranza.
30 to offer one's cheek to the striker, to have one's fil of disgrace!	30 (Iod)Porga a chi lo percuote la sua guancia, si sazi di umiliazioni.
31 For the Lord will not reject anyone for ever.	31 (Caf) Poiché il Signore non respinge per sempre.
32 If he brings grief, he wil have pity out of the ful ness of his faithful love,	32 (Caf) Ma, se affligge, avrà anche pietà secondo il suo grande amore.
33 for it is not for his own pleasure that he torments and grieves the human race.	33 (Caf) Poiché contro il suo desiderio egli umilia e affligge i figli dell’uomo.
34 When al the prisoners in a country are crushed underfoot,	34 (Lamed)Schiacciano sotto i loro piedi tutti i prigionieri del paese.
35 when human rights are overridden in defiance of the Most High,	35 (Lamed) Ledono i diritti di un uomo davanti al volto dell’Altissimo.
36 when someone is cheated of justice, does not the Lord see it?	36 (Lamed) Opprimono un altro in una causa. Forse il Signore non vede tutto questo?
37 Who has only to speak and it is so done? Who commands, if not the Lord?	37 (Mem) Chi mai ha parlato e la sua parola si è avverata, senza che il Signore lo avesse comandato?
38 From where, if not from the mouth of the Most High, do evil and good come?	38 (Mem) Dalla bocca dell’Altissimo non procedono forse le sventure e il bene?
39 Why then should anyone complain? Better to be bold against one's sins.	39 (Mem) Perché si rammarica un essere vivente, un uomo, per i castighi dei suoi peccati?
40 Let us examine our path, let us ponder it and return to Yahweh.	40 (Nun) «Esaminiamo la nostra condotta e scrutiamola, ritorniamo al Signore.
41 Let us raise our hearts and hands to God in heaven.	41 (Nun) Innalziamo i nostri cuori al di sopra delle mani, verso Dio nei cieli.
42 We are the ones who have sinned, who have rebel ed, and you have not forgiven.	42 (Nun) Noi abbiamo peccato e siamo stati ribelli, e tu non ci hai perdonato.
43 You have enveloped us in anger, pursuing us, slaughtering without pity.	43 (Samec) Ti sei avvolto nell’ira e ci hai perseguitati, hai ucciso senza pietà.
44 You have wrapped yourself in a cloud too thick for prayer to pierce.	44 (Samec) Ti sei avvolto in una nube, perché la supplica non giungesse fino a te.
45 You have reduced us to rubbish and refuse among the nations.	45 (Samec) Ci hai ridotti a spazzatura e rifiuto in mezzo ai popoli.
46 Our enemies open their mouths in chorus against us.	46 (Pe) Hanno spalancato la bocca contro di noi tutti i nostri nemici.
47 Terror and pitfal have been our lot, ravage and ruin.	47 (Pe) Nostra sorte sono terrore e fossa, sterminio e rovina».
48 My eyes dissolve in torrents of tears at the ruin of my beloved people.	48 (Pe) Rivoli di lacrime scorrono dai miei occhi, per la rovina della figlia del mio popolo.
49 My eyes wil weep ceaselessly, without relief,	49 (Ain) Il mio occhio piange senza sosta perché non ha pace,
50 until Yahweh looks down and sees from heaven.	50 (Ain) finché non guardi e non veda il Signore dal cielo.
51 My eyes have grown sore over al the daughters of my city.	51 (Ain) Il mio occhio mi tormenta per tutte le figlie della mia città.
52 Unprovoked, my enemies hunted me down like a bird.	52 (Sade) Mi hanno dato la caccia come a un passero coloro che mi odiano senza ragione.
53 They shut me final y in a pit, they closed me in with a stone.	53 (Sade) Mi hanno chiuso vivo nella fossa e hanno gettato pietre su di me.
54 The waters rose over my head; I thought, 'I am lost!'	54 (Sade) Sono salite le acque fin sopra il mio capo; ho detto: «È finita per me».
55 Yahweh, I called on your name from the deep pit.	55 (Kof) Ho invocato il tuo nome, o Signore, dalla fossa profonda.
56 You heard my voice, do not close your ear to my prayer, to my cry.	56 (Kof) Tu hai udito il mio grido: «Non chiudere l’orecchio al mio sfogo».
57 You are near when I cal to you. You said, 'Do not be afraid!'	57 (Kof) Tu eri vicino quando t’invocavo, hai detto: «Non temere!».
58 Lord, you defended my cause, you have redeemed my life.	58 (Res) Tu hai difeso, Signore, la mia causa, hai riscattato la mia vita.
59 Yahweh, you have seen the wrong done to me, grant me redress.	59 (Res) Hai visto, o Signore, la mia umiliazione, difendi il mio diritto!
60 You have seen their vindictiveness, al their plots against me.	60 (Res) Hai visto tutte le loro vendette, tutte le loro trame contro di me.
61 You have heard their insults, Yahweh, al their plots against me,	61 (Sin) Hai udito, Signore, i loro insulti, tutte le loro trame contro di me.
62 the whispering and murmuring of my enemies against me all day long.	62 (Sin) I discorsi dei miei oppositori e i loro pensieri sono contro di me tutto il giorno.
63 Look, whether they sit or stand, I am their refrain.	63 (Sin)Osserva quando siedono e quando si alzano; io sono la loro beffarda canzone.
64 Yahweh, repay them as their deeds deserve.	64 (Tau) Ripagali, o Signore, secondo l’opera delle loro mani.
65 Lay hardness of heart as your curse on them.	65 (Tau) Rendili duri di cuore, sia su di loro la tua maledizione!
66 Angrily pursue them, root them out from under your heavens!	66 (Tau) Perseguitali nell’ira, Signore, e distruggili sotto il cielo.
