NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
1 Make your appeal then. Wil you find an answer? To which of the holy ones wil you turn?1 Voca ergo, si est qui tibi respondeat,
et ad aliquem sanctorum convertere.
2 Resentment kil s the senseless, and anger brings death to the fool.2 Vere stultum interficit iracundia,
et parvulum occidit invidia.
3 I have seen the senseless taking root, when a curse fel suddenly on his house.3 Ego vidi stultum firma radice,
et maledixi pulchritudini ejus statim.
4 His children are deprived of prop and stay, ruined at the gate, and no one to defend them;4 Longe fient filii ejus a salute,
et conterentur in porta,
et non erit qui eruat.
5 their harvest goes to feed the hungry, God snatches it from their mouths, and covetous people thirst fortheir possessions.5 Cujus messem famelicus comedet,
et ipsum rapiet armatus,
et bibent sitientes divitias ejus.
6 No, misery does not grow out of the soil, nor sorrow spring from the ground.6 Nihil in terra sine causa fit,
et de humo non oritur dolor.
7 It is people who breed trouble for themselves as surely as eagles fly to the height.7 Homo nascitur ad laborem,
et avis ad volatum.
8 If I were you, I should appeal to God and lay my case before him.8 Quam ob rem ego deprecabor Dominum,
et ad Deum ponam eloquium meum :
9 His works are great, past al reckoning, marvels beyond al counting.9 qui facit magna et inscrutabilia,
et mirabilia absque numero ;
10 He sends down rain to the earth, pours down water on the fields.10 qui dat pluviam super faciem terræ,
et irrigat aquis universa ;
11 If his wil is to raise up the downcast, or exalt the afflicted to the heights of prosperity,11 qui ponit humiles in sublime,
et mœrentes erigit sospitate ;
12 he frustrates the plans of the artful so that they cannot succeed in their intrigues.12 qui dissipat cogitationes malignorum,
ne possint implere manus eorum quod cœperant ;
13 He traps the crafty in the snare of their own trickery, throws the plans of the cunning into disarray.13 qui apprehendit sapientes in astutia eorum,
et consilium pravorum dissipat.
14 In daylight they come up against darkness, and grope their way as if noon were night.14 Per diem incurrent tenebras,
et quasi in nocte, sic palpabunt in meridie.
15 He rescues the bankrupt from their jaws, and the needy from the grasp of the mighty.15 Porro salvum faciet egenum a gladio oris eorum,
et de manu violenti pauperem.
16 Hope springs afresh for the weak, and wickedness must shut its mouth.16 Et erit egeno spes ;
iniquitas autem contrahet os suum.
17 Blessed are those whom God corrects! Do not then scorn the lesson of Shaddai!17 Beatus homo qui corripitur a Deo :
increpationem ergo Domini ne reprobes :
18 For he who wounds is he who soothes the sore, and the hand that hurts is the hand that heals.18 quia ipse vulnerat, et medetur ;
percutit, et manus ejus sanabunt.
19 Six times he wil deliver you from sorrow, and the seventh time, evil wil not touch you.19 In sex tribulationibus liberabit te,
et in septima non tanget te malum.
20 In time of famine, he wil save you from death, and in wartime from the stroke of the sword.20 In fame eruet te de morte,
et in bello de manu gladii.
21 You will be safe from the lash of the tongue, unafraid at the approach of the despoiler.21 A flagello linguæ absconderis,
et non timebis calamitatem cum venerit.
22 You will laugh at drought and frost, and have no fear of the beasts of the earth.22 In vastitate et fame ridebis,
et bestias terræ non formidabis.
23 You will have a pact with the stones of the field, and live in amity with wild beasts.23 Sed cum lapidibus regionum pactum tuum,
et bestiæ terræ pacificæ erunt tibi.
24 You will know that your tent is secure, and your sheepfold unharmed when you inspect it.24 Et scies quod pacem habeat tabernaculum tuum ;
et visitans speciem tuam, non peccabis.
25 You will see your descendants multiply, your offspring grow like the grass in the fields.25 Scies quoque quoniam multiplex erit semen tuum,
et progenies tua quasi herba terræ.
26 At a ripe age you wil go to the grave, like a wheatsheaf stacked in due season.26 Ingredieris in abundantia sepulchrum,
sicut infertur acervus tritici in tempore suo.
27 Al this we have observed and it is so! Heed it, you wil be the wiser for it!27 Ecce hoc, ut investigavimus, ita est :
quod auditum, mente pertracta.
