NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the reputation of Jesus1 In illo tempore audivit He rodes tetrarcha famam Iesu
and said to his servants, "This man is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why mighty powers are at work in him."2 et ait puerissuis: “ Hic est Ioannes Baptista; ipse surrexit a mortuis, et ideo virtutesoperantur in eo ”.
Now Herod had arrested John, bound (him), and put him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip,3 Herodes enim tenuit Ioannem et alligavit eum et posuit incarcere propter Herodiadem uxorem Philippi fratris sui.
for John had said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."4 Dicebat enim illiIoannes: “ Non licet tibi habere eam ”.
Although he wanted to kill him, he feared the people, for they regarded him as a prophet.5 Et volens illum occidere, timuitpopulum, quia sicut prophetam eum habebant.
But at a birthday celebration for Herod, the daughter of Herodias performed a dance before the guests and delighted Herod6 Die autem natalis Herodis saltavit filia Herodiadis in medio et placuitHerodi,
so much that he swore to give her whatever she might ask for.7 unde cum iuramento pollicitus est ei dare, quodcumque postulasset.
Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist."8 At illa, praemonita a matre sua: “ Da mihi, inquit, hic in disco caput IoannisBaptistae ”.
The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests who were present, he ordered that it be given,9 Et contristatus rex propter iuramentum et eos, qui pariterrecumbebant, iussit dari
and he had John beheaded in the prison.10 misitque et decollavit Ioannem in carcere;
His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who took it to her mother.11 etallatum est caput eius in disco et datum est puellae, et tulit matri suae.
His disciples came and took away the corpse and buried him; and they went and told Jesus.12 Etaccedentes discipuli eius tulerunt corpus et sepelierunt illud et venientesnuntiaverunt Iesu.
When Jesus heard of it, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns.13 Quod cum audisset Iesus, secessit inde in navicula in locum desertum seorsum;et cum audissent, turbae secutae sunt eum pedestres de civitatibus.
When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick.14 Et exiensvidit turbam multam et misertus est eorum et curavit languidos eorum.
When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, "This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves."15 Vespereautem facto, accesserunt ad eum discipuli dicentes: “ Desertus est locus, ethora iam praeteriit; dimitte turbas, ut euntes in castella emant sibi escas ”.
(Jesus) said to them, "There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves."16 Iesus autem dixit eis: “ Non habent necesse ire; date illis vos manducare”.
But they said to him, "Five loaves and two fish are all we have here."17 Illi autem dicunt ei: “ Non habemus hic nisi quinque panes et duospisces ”.
Then he said, "Bring them here to me,"18 Qui ait: “ Afferte illos mihi huc ”.
and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds.19 Et cum iussissetturbas discumbere supra fenum, acceptis quinque panibus et duobus piscibus, aspiciens in caelum benedixit et fregit et dedit discipulis panes, discipuliautem turbis.
They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over --twelve wicker baskets full.20 Et manducaverunt omnes et saturati sunt; et tulerunt reliquiasfragmentorum duodecim cophinos plenos.
Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children.21 Manducantium autem fuit numerus ferequinque milia virorum, exceptis mulieribus et parvulis.
Then he made the disciples get into the boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.22 Et statim iussit discipulos ascendere in naviculam et praecedere eum transfretum, donec dimitteret turbas.
After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone.23 Et dimissis turbis, ascendit in montem solusorare. Vespere autem facto, solus erat ibi.
Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it.24 Navicula autem iam multis stadiis a terra distabat, fluctibus iactata; eratenim contrarius ventus.
During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them, walking on the sea.25 Quarta autem vigilia noctis venit ad eos ambulanssupra mare.
When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. "It is a ghost," they said, and they cried out in fear.26 Discipuli autem, videntes eum supra mare ambulantem, turbati suntdicentes: “ Phantasma est ”, et prae timore clamaverunt.
At once (Jesus) spoke to them, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid."27 Statimque Iesuslocutus est eis dicens: “ Habete fiduciam, ego sum; nolite timere! ”.
Peter said to him in reply, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water."28 Respondens autem ei Petrus dixit: “ Domine, si tu es, iube me venire ad tesuper aquas ”.
He said, "Come." Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.29 At ipse ait: “ Veni! ”. Et descendens Petrus de naviculaambulavit super aquas et venit ad Iesum.
But when he saw how (strong) the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!"30 Videns vero ventum validum timuitet, cum coepisset mergi, clamavit dicens: “ Domine, salvum me fac! ”.
Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?"31 Continuo autem Iesus extendens manum apprehendit eum et ait illi: “ Modicaefidei, quare dubitasti? ”.
After they got into the boat, the wind died down.32 Et cum ascendissent in naviculam, cessavitventus.
Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, "Truly, you are the Son of God."33 Qui autem in navicula erant, adoraverunt eum dicentes: “ VereFilius Dei es! ”.
After making the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret.34 Et cum transfretassent, venerunt in terram Gennesaret.
When the men of that place recognized him, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought to him all those who were sick35 Et cum cognovissenteum viri loci illius, miserunt in universam regionem illam et obtulerunt eiomnes male habentes,
and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak, and as many as touched it were healed.36 et rogabant eum, ut vel fimbriam vestimenti eiustangerent; et, quicumque tetigerunt, salvi facti sunt.
