1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the reputation of Jesus	1 At the time Herod the Tetrarch heard the fame of Jesus.
2 and said to his servants, "This man is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why mighty powers are at work in him."	2 And he said to his servants: This is John the Baptist: he is risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works shew forth themselves in him.
3 Now Herod had arrested John, bound (him), and put him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip,	3 For Herod had apprehended John and bound him, and put him into prison, because of Herodias, his brother's wife.
4 for John had said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."	4 For John said to him: It is not lawful for thee to have her.
5 Although he wanted to kill him, he feared the people, for they regarded him as a prophet.	5 And having a mind to put him to death, he feared the people: because they esteemed him as a prophet.
6 But at a birthday celebration for Herod, the daughter of Herodias performed a dance before the guests and delighted Herod	6 But on Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before them: and pleased Herod.
7 so much that he swore to give her whatever she might ask for.	7 Whereupon he promised with an oath, to give her whatsoever she would ask of him.
8 Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist."	8 But she being instructed before by her mother, said: Give me here in a dish the head of John the Baptist.
9 The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests who were present, he ordered that it be given,	9 And the king was struck sad: yet because of his oath, and for them that sat with him at table, he commanded it to be given.
10 and he had John beheaded in the prison.	10 And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.
11 His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who took it to her mother.	11 And his head was brought in a dish: and it was given to the damsel, and she brought it to her mother.
12 His disciples came and took away the corpse and buried him; and they went and told Jesus.	12 And his disciples came and took the body, and buried it, and came and told Jesus.
13 When Jesus heard of it, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns.	13 Which when Jesus had heard, he retired from thence by boat, into a desert place apart, and the multitudes having heard of it, followed him on foot out of the cities.
14 When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick.	14 And he coming forth saw a great multitude, and had compassion on them, and healed their sick.
15 When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, "This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves."	15 And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying: This is a desert place, and the hour is now past: send away the multitudes, that going into the towns, they may buy themselves victuals.
16 (Jesus) said to them, "There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves."	16 But Jesus said to them, They have no need to go: give you them to eat.
17 But they said to him, "Five loaves and two fish are all we have here."	17 They answered him: We have not here, but five loaves, and two fishes.
18 Then he said, "Bring them here to me,"	18 He said to them: Bring them hither to me.
19 and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds.	19 And when he had commanded the multitudes to sit down upon the grass, he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes.
20 They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over --twelve wicker baskets full.	20 And they did all eat, and were filled. And they took up what remained, twelve full baskets of fragments.
21 Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children.	21 And the number of them that did eat, was five thousand men, besides women and children.
22 Then he made the disciples get into the boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.	22 And forthwith Jesus obliged his disciples to go up into the boat, and to go before him over the water, till he dismissed the people.
23 After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone.	23 And having dismissed the multitude, he went into a mountain alone to pray. And when it was evening, he was there alone.
24 Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it.	24 But the boat in the midst of the sea was tossed with the waves: for the wind was contrary.
25 During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them, walking on the sea.	25 And in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them walking upon the sea.
26 When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. "It is a ghost," they said, and they cried out in fear.	26 And they seeing him walk upon the sea, were troubled, saying: It is an apparition. And they cried out for fear.
27 At once (Jesus) spoke to them, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid."	27 And immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying: Be of good heart: it is I, fear ye not.
28 Peter said to him in reply, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water."	28 And Peter making answer, said: Lord, if it be thou, bid me come to thee upon the waters.
29 He said, "Come." Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.	29 And he said: Come. And Peter going down out of the boat, walked upon the water to come to Jesus.
30 But when he saw how (strong) the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!"	30 But seeing the wind strong, he was afraid: and when he began to sink, he cried out, saying: Lord, save me.
31 Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?"	31 And immediately Jesus stretching forth his hand took hold of him, and said to him: O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt?
32 After they got into the boat, the wind died down.	32 And when they were come up into the boat, the wind ceased.
33 Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, "Truly, you are the Son of God."	33 And they that were in the boat came and adored him, saying: Indeed thou art the Son of God.
34 After making the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret.	34 And having passed the water, they came into the country of Genesar.
35 When the men of that place recognized him, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought to him all those who were sick	35 And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent into all that country, and brought to him all that were diseased.
36 and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak, and as many as touched it were healed.	36 And they besought him that they might touch but the hem of his garment. And as many as touched, were made whole.
