NEW AMERICAN BIBLEKING JAMES BIBLE
At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the reputation of Jesus1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,
and said to his servants, "This man is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why mighty powers are at work in him."2 And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.
Now Herod had arrested John, bound (him), and put him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip,3 For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife.
for John had said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."4 For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.
Although he wanted to kill him, he feared the people, for they regarded him as a prophet.5 And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.
But at a birthday celebration for Herod, the daughter of Herodias performed a dance before the guests and delighted Herod6 But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.
so much that he swore to give her whatever she might ask for.7 Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.
Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist."8 And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger.
The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests who were present, he ordered that it be given,9 And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.
and he had John beheaded in the prison.10 And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.
His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who took it to her mother.11 And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.
His disciples came and took away the corpse and buried him; and they went and told Jesus.12 And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.
When Jesus heard of it, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns.13 When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.
When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick.14 And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.
When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, "This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves."15 And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.
(Jesus) said to them, "There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves."16 But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.
But they said to him, "Five loaves and two fish are all we have here."17 And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.
Then he said, "Bring them here to me,"18 He said, Bring them hither to me.
and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds.19 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over --twelve wicker baskets full.20 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.
Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children.21 And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.
Then he made the disciples get into the boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.22 And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.
After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone.23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.
Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it.24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.
During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them, walking on the sea.25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. "It is a ghost," they said, and they cried out in fear.26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
At once (Jesus) spoke to them, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid."27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
Peter said to him in reply, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water."28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
He said, "Come." Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
But when he saw how (strong) the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!"30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?"31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
After they got into the boat, the wind died down.32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, "Truly, you are the Son of God."33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
After making the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret.34 And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.
When the men of that place recognized him, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought to him all those who were sick35 And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;
and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak, and as many as touched it were healed.36 And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.
