VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
1 Hæ sunt generationes filiorum Noë, Sem, Cham et Japheth : natique sunt eis filii post diluvium.1 These are the descendants of Noah's sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, to whom sons were born afterthe flood:
2 Filii Japheth : Gomer, et Magog, et Madai, et Javan, et Thubal, et Mosoch, et Thiras.2 Japheth's sons: Gomer, Magog, the Medes, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, Tiras.
3 Porro filii Gomer : Ascenez et Riphath et Thogorma.3 Gomer's sons: Ashkenaz, Riphath, Togarmah.
4 Filii autem Javan : Elisa et Tharsis, Cetthim et Dodanim.4 Javan's sons: Elishah, Tarshish, the Kittim, the Dananites.
5 Ab his divisæ sunt insulæ gentium in regionibus suis, unusquisque secundum linguam suam et familias suas in nationibus suis.
5 From these came the dispersal to the islands of the nations. These were Japheth's sons, in theirrespective countries, each with its own language, by clan and nation.
6 Filii autem Cham : Chus, et Mesraim, et Phuth, et Chanaan.6 Ham's sons: Cush, Mizraim, Put, Canaan.
7 Filii Chus : Saba, et Hevila, et Sabatha, et Regma, et Sabatacha. Filii Regma : Saba et Dadan.7 Cush's sons: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, Sabteca. Raamah's sons: Sheba, Dedan.
8 Porro Chus genuit Nemrod : ipse c?pit esse potens in terra,8 Cush fathered Nimrod who was the first potentate on earth.
9 et erat robustus venator coram Domino. Ob hoc exivit proverbium : Quasi Nemrod robustus venator coram Domino.9 He was a mighty hunter in the eyes of Yahweh, hence the saying, 'Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter in theeyes of Yahweh'.
10 Fuit autem principium regni ejus Babylon, et Arach et Achad, et Chalanne, in terra Sennaar.10 The mainstays of his empire were Babel, Erech and Accad, all of them in the land of Shinar.
11 De terra illa egressus est Assur, et ædificavit Niniven, et plateas civitatis, et Chale.11 From this country came Asshur, and he built Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah,
12 Resen quoque inter Niniven et Chale : hæc est civitas magna.12 and Resen between Nineveh and Calah (this being the capital).
13 At vero Mesraim genuit Ludim, et Anamim et Laabim, Nephthuim,13 Mizraim fathered the people of Lud, of Anam, Lehab, Naphtuh,
14 et Phetrusim, et Chasluim : de quibus egressi sunt Philisthiim et Caphtorim.14 Pathros, Casluh and Caphtor, from which the Philistines came.
15 Chanaan autem genuit Sidonem primogenitum suum. Hethæum,15 Canaan fathered Sidon, his first-born, then Heth,
16 et Jebusæum, et Amorrhæum, Gergesæum,16 and the Jebusites, the Amorites, Girgashites,
17 Hevæum, et Aracæum : Sinæum,17 Hivites, Arkites, Sinites,
18 et Aradium, Samaræum, et Amathæum : et post hæc disseminati sunt populi Chananæorum.18 Arvadites, Zemarites and Hamathites. Later, the Canaanite clans spread out.
19 Factique sunt termini Chanaan venientibus a Sidone Geraram usque Gazam, donec ingrediaris Sodomam et Gomorrham, et Adamam, et Seboim usque Lesa.19 The Canaanite frontier stretched from Sidon al the way to Gerar near Gaza, and al the way toSodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboi m near Lesha.
20 Hi sunt filii Cham in cognationibus, et linguis, et generationibus, terrisque et gentibus suis.
20 These were Ham's sons, by clans and languages, by countries and nations.
21 De Sem quoque nati sunt, patre omnium filiorum Heber, fratre Japheth majore.21 Shem too fathered sons, being ancestor of all the sons of Eber and Japheth's elder brother.
22 Filii Sem : Ælam, et Assur, et Arphaxad, et Lud, et Aram.22 Shem's sons: Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, Aram.
23 Filii Aram : Us, et Hul, et Gether, et Mes.23 Aram's sons: Uz, Hul, Gether and Mash.
24 At vero Arphaxad genuit Sale, de quo ortus est Heber.24 Arpachshad fathered Shelah, and Shelah fathered Eber.
25 Natique sunt Heber filii duo : nomen uni Phaleg, eo quod in diebus ejus divisa sit terra : et nomen fratris ejus Jectan.25 To Eber were born two sons: the first was cal ed Peleg, because it was in his time that the earth wasdivided, and his brother was called Joktan.
26 Qui Jectan genuit Elmodad, et Saleph, et Asarmoth, Jare,26 Joktan fathered Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah,
27 et Aduram, et Uzal, et Decla,27 Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah,
28 et Ebal, et Abimaël, Saba,28 Obal, Abima-El, Sheba,
29 et Ophir, et Hevila, et Jobab : omnes isti, filii Jectan.29 Ophir, Havilah, Jobab; al these were sons of Joktan.
30 Et facta est habitatio eorum de Messa pergentibus usque Sephar montem orientalem.30 They occupied a stretch of country from Mesha all the way to Sephar, the eastern mountain range.
31 Isti filii Sem secundum cognationes, et linguas, et regiones in gentibus suis.31 These were Shem's sons, by clans and languages, by countries and nations.
32 Hæ familiæ Noë juxta populos et nationes suas. Ab his divisæ sunt gentes in terra post diluvium.32 Such were the clans of Noah's descendants, listed by descent and nation. From them, other nationsbranched out on earth after the flood.
