1 Fuit vir unus de Ramathaim Suphita de monte Ephraim, et nomen eius Elcana filius Ieroham filii Eliu filii Thohu filii Suph, Ephrathaeus.	1 There was a man of Ramathaim, a Zuphite from the highlands of Ephraim whose name was Elkanahson of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.
2 Et habuit duas uxores: nomen uni Anna et nomen secundae Phenenna. Fueruntque Phenennae filii, Annae autem non erant liberi.	2 He had two wives, one called Hannah, the other Peninnah; Peninnah had children but Hannah hadnone.
3 Et ascendebat vir ille de civitate sua singulis annis, ut adoraret et sacrificaret Domino exercituum in Silo. Erant autem ibi duo filii Heli, Ophni et Phinees, sacerdotes Domini.	3 Every year this man used to go up from his town to worship, and to sacrifice to Yahweh Sabaoth atShiloh. (The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there as priests of Yahweh.)
4 Venit ergo dies, et immolavit Elcana dabatque Phenennae uxori suae et cunctis filiis eius et filiabus partes;	4 One day Elkanah offered a sacrifice. Now he used to give portions to Peninnah and to al her sons anddaughters;
5 Annae autem dabat unam partem electam, quia Annam diligebat; Dominus autem concluserat vulvam eius.	5 to Hannah, however, he would give only one portion: for, although he loved Hannah more, Yahweh hadmade her barren.
6 Affligebat quoque eam aemula eius et vehementer angebat, ut conturbaret eam, quod conclusisset Dominus vulvam eius.	6 Furthermore, her rival would taunt and provoke her, because Yahweh had made her womb barren.
7 Sicque faciebat per singulos annos, cum, redeunte tempore, ascenderent templum Domini, et sic provocabat eam. Porro illa flebat et non capiebat cibum.	7 And this went on year after year; every time they went up to the temple of Yahweh she used to taunther. On that day she wept and would not eat anything;
8 Dixit ergo ei Elcana vir suus: “ Anna, cur fles et quare non comedis? Et quam ob rem affligitur cor tuum? Numquid non ego melior sum tibi quam decem filii? ”.	8 so her husband Elkanah said, 'Hannah, why are you crying? Why are you not eating anything? Why areyou so sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?'
9 Surrexit autem Anna, postquam comederant et biberant in Silo, et Heli sacerdote sedente super sellam ante postes templi Domini.	9 When they had finished eating in the room, Hannah got up and stood before Yahweh. Eli the priest wassitting on his seat by the doorpost of the temple of Yahweh.
10 Cum esset Anna amaro animo, oravit Dominum flens largiter	10 In the bitterness of her soul she prayed to Yahweh with many tears,
11 et votum vovit dicens: “ Domine exercituum, si respiciens videris afflictionem famulae tuae et recordatus mei fueris nec oblitus ancillae tuae dederisque servae tuae sexum virilem, dabo eum Domino omnes dies vitae eius, et novacula non ascendet super caput eius ”.	11 and she made this vow, 'Yahweh Sabaoth! Should you condescend to notice the humiliation of yourservant and keep her in mind instead of disregarding your servant, and give her a boy, I wil give him to Yahwehfor the whole of his life and no razor shal ever touch his head.'
12 Factum est ergo, cum illa multiplicaret preces coram Domino, ut Heli observaret os eius.	12 While she went on praying to Yahweh, Eli was watching her mouth,
13 Porro Anna loquebatur in corde suo; tantumque labia illius movebantur, et vox penitus non audiebatur. Aestimavit igitur eam Heli temulentam	13 for Hannah was speaking under her breath; her lips were moving but her voice could not be heard,and Eli thought that she was drunk.
14 dixitque ei: “ Usquequo ebria eris? Digere paulisper vinum, quo mades! ”.	14 Eli said, 'How much longer are you going to stay drunk? Get rid of your wine.'
15 Respondens Anna: “ Nequaquam, inquit, domine mi; nam mulier infelix nimis ego sum: vinumque et omne, quod inebriare potest, non bibi, sed effudi animam meam in conspectu Domini.	15 'No, my lord,' Hannah replied, 'I am a woman in great trouble; I have not been drinking wine or strongdrink -- I am pouring out my soul before Yahweh.
16 Ne reputes ancillam tuam quasi unam de filiabus Belial, quia ex multitudine doloris et maeroris mei locuta sum usque in praesens ”.	16 Do not take your servant for a worthless woman; al this time I have been speaking from the depth ofmy grief and my resentment.'
17 Tunc Heli ait ei: “ Vade in pace, et Deus Israel det tibi petitionem, quam rogasti eum ”.	17 Eli then replied, 'Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant what you have asked of him.'
18 Et illa dixit: “ Utinam inveniat ancilla tua gratiam in oculis tuis ”. Et abiit mulier in viam suam et comedit; vultusque illius non fuerunt amplius sicut prius.	18 To which she said, 'May your servant find favour in your sight.' With that, the woman went away; shebegan eating and was dejected no longer.
19 Et surrexerunt mane et adoraverunt coram Domino. Reversique sunt et venerunt in domum suam in Rama. Cognovit autem Elcana Annam uxorem suam, et recordatus est eius Dominus.	19 They got up early in the morning and, after worshipping Yahweh, set out and went home to Ramah.Elkanah lay with his wife Hannah, and Yahweh remembered her.
20 Et factum est post circulum dierum concepit Anna et peperit filium vocavitque nomen eius Samuel, eo quod a Domino postulasset eum.	20 Hannah conceived and, in due course, gave birth to a son, whom she named Samuel, 'since', shesaid, 'I asked Yahweh for him.'
21 Ascendit autem vir Elcana et omnis domus eius, ut immolaret Domino hostiam annuam et votum suum.	21 Elkanah, the husband, went up with all his family to offer the annual sacrifice to Yahweh and to fulfilhis vow.
22 Et Anna non ascendit; dixit enim viro suo: “ Non vadam, donec ablactetur infans, et ducam eum, et appareat ante conspectum Domini et maneat ibi iugiter ”.	22 However, Hannah did not go up, having said to her husband, 'Not before the child has been weaned.Then I shal bring him and present him before Yahweh and he will stay there for ever.'
23 Et ait ei Elcana vir suus: “ Fac, quod bonum tibi videtur, et mane, donec ablactes eum; precorque, ut impleat Dominus verbum suum ”. Mansit ergo mulier et lactavit filium suum, donec amoveret eum a lacte.	23 Elkanah her husband then said to her, 'Do what you think fit; wait until you have weaned him. MayYahweh bring about what he has said.' So the woman stayed behind and nursed her child until she weaned him.
24 Et adduxit eum secum, postquam ablactaverat, cum vitulo trium annorum et tribus modiis farinae et utre vini; et adduxit eum ad domum Domini in Silo. Puer autem erat adhuc infantulus.	24 When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, as wel as a three-year-old bul , an ephah offlour and a skin of wine, and took him into the temple of Yahweh at Shiloh; the child was very young.
25 Et immolaverunt vitulum et obtulerunt puerum Heli,	25 They sacrificed the bul and led the child to Eli.
26 et ait Anna: “ Obsecro, mi domine; vivit anima tua, domine, ego sum illa mulier, quae steti coram te hic orans Dominum.	26 She said, 'If you please, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood beside you here,praying to Yahweh.
27 Pro puero isto oravi, et dedit mihi Dominus petitionem meam, quam postulavi eum.	27 This is the child for which I was praying, and Yahweh has granted me what I asked of him.
28 Idcirco et ego commodavi eum Domino; cunctis diebus, quibus vivet, postulatus erit pro Domino ”. Et adoraverunt ibi Dominum.	28 Now I make him over to Yahweh for the whole of his life. He is made over to Yahweh.' They thenworshipped Yahweh there.
