1 COPIA della lettera mandata da Geremia a quegli, che dovcano essere condotti schiavi a Babilonia dal re de' Babilonesi, per far loro sapere quello, che Dio aveva a lui comandato. Per ragion de' peccati commessi dinanzi al Signore voi sarete condotti schiavi a Babilonia da Nabuchodonosor re de' Babilonesi.	1 A copy of the letter which Jeremiah sent to those who were being led captive to Babylon by the king of the Babylonians, to convey to them what God had commanded him:
2 Arrivati adunque a Babilonia, ivi starete per moltissimi anni, e per lungo tempo fino a sette generazioni: e dipoi vi trarrò di colà in pace.	2 When you reach Babylon you will be there many years, a period seven generations long; after which I will bring you back from there in peace.
3 Ma adesso voi vedrete in Babilonia dei d'oro, e d'argento, e di pietra, e di legno portarsi sopra le spalle, e incuter timore alle genti.	3 And now in Babylon you will see borne upon men's shoulders gods of silver and gold and wood, which cast fear upon the pagans.
4 Badate adunque di non imitar voi pure il fare degli stranieri, sicché abbiate paura, e vi prenda il timore di tali dei.	4 Take care that you yourselves do not imitate their alien example and stand in fear of them,
5 Quando adunque vedrete la turba dinanzi, e di dietro adorarli, dite ne' vostri cuori: Te fa d'uopo di adorare, o Signore;	5 when you see the crowd before them and behind worshiping them. Rather, say in your hearts, "You, O LORD, are to be worshiped!";
6 Perocché il mio Angelo è con voi, ed io stesso avrò cura delle anime vostre.	6 for my angel is with you, and he is the custodian of your lives.
7 Conciossiachè la loro lingua fu limata dall'artefice: quegli ancora, che sono indorati, e inargentati, sono menzogna, e non posson parlare.	7 Their tongues are smoothed by woodworkers; they are covered with gold and silver-but they are a fraud, and cannot speak.
8 E come si fa ad una fanciulla, che ama gli ornamenti, così dato di mano all'oro si ornano questi con arte.	8 People bring gold, as to a maiden in love with ornament,
9 Certo, che i loro dei hanno sulle lor teste corone di oro, onde poi i sacerdoti tolgon ad essi l'oro, e l'argento, e se l'appropriano.	9 and furnish crowns for the heads of their gods. Then sometimes the priests take the silver and gold from their gods and spend it on themselves,
10 E di questo ne ornano le prostitute, e le meretrici, e vicendevolmente riavutolo dalle meretrici ne abbelliscono i loro dei;	10 or give part of it to the harlots on the terrace. They trick them out in garments like men, these gods of silver and gold and wood;
11 E questi (dei) non san liberarsi dalla ruggine, e dalla tignuola.	11 but though they are wrapped in purple clothing, they are not safe from corrosion or insects.
12 Ma quando gli han rivestiti di porpora, lavati loro la faccia a motivo della polvere, che è grandissima ne' loro templi.	12 They wipe their faces clean of the house dust which is thick upon them.
13 E l'idolo ha in mano lo scettro come un uomo, come uno, che governa un paese: ma egli non fa morir chi lo offende.	13 Each has a scepter, like the human ruler of a district; but none does away with those that offend against it.
14 Ha talora in mano la spada, e la scure, ma non si può salvar dalla guerra, né dai ladri; per le quali cose in tendete com'ei non son dii.	14 Each has in its right hand an axe or dagger, but it cannot save itself from war or pillage. Thus it is known they are not gods; do not fear them.
15 Non abbiate adunque timore di essi: imperocché tali sono i loro dei, qnal è un vaso rotto, che non è buono a nulla.	15 As useless as one's broken tools
16 Collocati, che sono in una casa, i loro occhi si cuopron di polvere smossa da' piedi di color, che vi entrano.	16 are their gods, set up in their houses; their eyes are full of dust from the feet of those who enter.
17 E siccome colui, che ha offeso il re, si chiude dentro molte porte, o come fassi ad un morto, che si conduca alla sepoltura; cosi i sacerdoti assicuran le porte con serrature, e chiavistelli, affinché i ladri non ispoglin gli dei.	17 Their courtyards are walled in like those of a man brought to execution for a crime against the king; the priests reinforce their houses with gates and bars and bolts, lest they be carried off by robbers.
18 Accendon loro eziandio molte lampane, delle quali non posson quelli vederne pur una: ei sono come le travi in una casa.	18 They light more lamps for them than for themselves, yet not one of these can they see.
19 Dicono, che i serpenti, che son dalla terra, mangian le loro interiora quando mangiano ad essi i lor vestimenti, ed essi noi sentono.	19 They are like any beam in the house; it is said their hearts are eaten away. Though the insects out of the ground consume them and their garments, they do not feel it.
20 Le loro facce son nere pel fumo, che si fa nelle lor case.	20 Their faces are blackened by the smoke of the house.
21 Sopra il loro corpo, e sopra il loro capo volano le civette, e le rondini, e altri uccelli, e il simile fanno i gatti.	21 Bats and swallows alight on their bodies and on their heads; and cats as well as birds.
22 Donde imparate, che questi non sono dei: non abbiate adunque di essi timore.	22 Know, therefore, that they are not gods, and do not fear them.
23 l'oro ancora, che hanno, è per mostra: se qualcheduno non li ripulisce dalla ruggine, non saran risplendenti: e quando erano fusi, nulla sentivano.	23 Despite the gold that covers them for adornment, unless someone wipes away the corrosion, they do not shine; nor did they feel anything when they were molded.
24 E furon comprati a prezzo sommo, benché spirito non sia in essi.	24 They are bought at any price, and there is no spirit in them.
25 Li portano sulle spalle quasi sian senza piedi, facendo vedere agli uomini la vergognosa loro impotenza. Siano confusi anche color, che gli adorano.	25 Having no feet, they are carried on men's shoulders, displaying their shame to all; and those who worship them are put to confusion
26 Per questo se cascan per terra, non si rialzan da loro, e se uno li collocherà ritti, da per loro non istaranuo, ma si reggeranno sugli omeri di quelli, come i morti.	26 because, if they fall to the ground, the worshipers must raise them up. They neither move of themselves if one sets them upright, nor come upright if they fall; but one puts gifts beside them as beside the dead.
27 Le loro ostie le vendono i sacerdoti in loro prò, ed anche le loro donne ne strappano, e non ne fanno parte all'ammalato, né al mendico;	27 Their priests resell their sacrifices for their own advantage. Even their wives cure parts of the meat, but do not share it with the poor and the weak;
28 I lor sagrifizj li toccano donne fresche dal parto, e le menstruate. Conoscendo adunque da tali cose, ch'ei non son dei, non li temete;	28 the menstruous and women in childbed handle their sacrifices. Knowing from this that they are not gods, do not fear them.
29 Imperocché a qual titolo si chiaman dei perché le donne presentano doni a questi dei d'argento, d'oro, e di legno,	29 How can they be called gods? For women bring the offerings to these gods of silver and gold and wood;
30 E nelle case di essi seggono i sacerdoti, portando tonache stracciate, e rase le teste, e la barba, e il capo ignudo.	30 and in their temples the priests squat with torn tunic and with shaven hair and beard, and with their heads uncovered.
31 E dan ruggiti alzando la voce ai loro dei, come si fa alla cena di un morto.	31 They shout and wail before their gods as others do at a funeral banquet.
32 I sacerdoti tolgon loro le vestimenta, e ne rivéston le mogli, e i figliuoli.	32 The priests take some of their clothing and put it on their wives and children.
33 E se è fatto loro del male, e se è fatto loro del bene, non posson rendere il contraccambio: e non possono fare un re, né disfarlo.	33 Whether they are treated well or ill by anyone, they cannot requite it; they can neither set up a king nor remove him.
34 Parimente non possono né dar ricchezze, né vendicarsi. Se uno fa ad essi un voto, e noll'adempie, neppur di ciò si querelano.	34 Similarly, they cannot give anyone riches or coppers; if one fails to fulfill a vow to them, they cannot exact it of him.
35 Non liberanti' uomo dalla morte, e non salvano il debole dal più possente.	35 They neither save a man from death, nor deliver the weak from the strong.
36 Non rendono a' ciechi la vista non traggon uomo dalla miseria.	36 To no blind man do they restore his sight, nor do they save any man in an emergency.
37 Non avran pietà della vedova, né faranno bene agli orfani.	37 They neither pity the widow nor benefit the orphan.
38 Simili alle pietre del monte son questi loro dei di legno, di pietra, d'oro, e d'argento. E color, che gli onorano, saran confusi.	38 These gilded and silvered wooden statues are like stones from the mountains; and their worshipers will be put to shame.
39 Come dunque è da pensarsi, o da dirsi, ch'ei siano dei,	39 How then can it be thought or claimed that they are gods?
40 Quando di più i Caldei stessi non li rispettano? eglino quando hanno udito, che uno non può parlare, perché è unitolo, lo presentano a Bel, pre gandolo a far, ch'ei parli;	40 Even the Chaldeans themselves have no respect for them; for when they see a deaf mute, incapable of speech, they bring forward Bel and ask the god to make noise, as though the man could understand;
41 Come se potessero aver sentimento coloro, che non hanno moto; ed egli stessi, fatti accorti, gli abbandonano; perocché i loro dei non han senso.	41 and they are themselves unable to reflect and abandon these gods, for they have no sense.
42 Ma le donne cinte di corde seggon per le strade, brugiando noccioli d'ulivi.	42 And their women, girt with cords, sit by the roads, burning chaff for incense;
43 E quando una di esse condotta via da uno, che passa, ha dormito con lui getta in faccia alla sua vicina, che ella non è stata stimata da tanto com'essa, e che la sua corda non è stata rotta.	43 and whenever one of them is drawn aside by some passer-by who lies with her, she mocks her neighbor who has not been dignified as she has, and has not had her cord broken.
44 E tutto quello, che intorno ad essi ai fa, è cosa falsa. Come mai è da pensarsi, o da dirsi, ch'ei siano dei?	44 All that takes place around these gods is a fraud: how then can it be thought or claimed that they are gods?
45 Sono stati fatti da legnajuoli, e da orefici. E non altro saranno, che quello, che piacerà a' sacerdoti.	45 They are produced by woodworkers and goldsmiths, and they are nothing else than what these craftsmen wish them to be.
46 Gli stessi artefici, che li fanno, non son di lunga durata. Potrann' eglino adunque esser dei i lavori fatti da essi?	46 Even those who produce them are not long-lived;
47 Hanno lasciate menzogne, e ob brobrio a quei, che saranno dopo di loro.	47 how then can what they have produced be gods? They have left frauds and opprobrium to their successors.
48 Che se sopraggiunge loro guerra, e sciagure, i sacerdoti vanno pensando dove riporsi con que' lor dei.	48 For when war or disaster comes upon them, the priests deliberate among themselves where they can hide with them.
49 Come mai adunque possono essere in concetto di dei coloro, che né dalla guerra si liberano, né si sottraggono alle sciagure?	49 How then can one not know that these are no-gods, which do not save themselves either from war or from disaster?
50 Imperocché essendo cose di legno, e indorate, e inargentate, si conoscerà una volta da tutte le genti, e dai regi che son falsità: manifesto essendo, ch'ei non son dei, ma opere delle mani degli uomini, e non fanno nulla, che sia da Dio.	50 They are wooden, gilded and silvered; they will later be known for frauds. To all peoples and kings it will be clear that they are not gods, but human handiwork; and that God's work is not in them.
51 E donde adunque conoscesi, ch'ei non sono dei, ma opere delle mani degli uomini, e che nulla fanno, che sia da Dio?	51 Who does not know that they are not gods?
52 Non danno il re ad un regno, né concedono agli uomini la pioggia,	52 They set no king over the land, nor do they give men rain.
53 Non decideranno le controversie, né libereranno le provincie dalle ingiurie; perocché nulla possono, come cornacchie, che volan di mezzo tral cielo, e la terra.	53 They neither vindicate their own rights, nor do they recover what is unjustly taken, for they are unable;
54 Imperocché quando si sarà appiccato il fuoco alla casa degli dei di legno, d'argento, e d'oro, i lor sacerdoti fuggiran certamente, e si metteranno in salvo; ma eglino vi brugeranno dentro non men che le travi.	54 they are like crows between heaven and earth. For when fire breaks out in the temple of these wooden or gilded or silvered gods, though the priests flee and are safe, they themselves are burnt up in the fire like beams.
55 E non faran resistenza a un re in tempo di guerra: come adunque da pensarsi, o da tenersi, ch'ei siano dei?	55 They cannot resist a king, or enemy forces.
56 Non si salveranno da' ladri, né da' malandrini gli dei di legno, e di pietra, e indorati, e inargentati, perchè quelli ne posson più,	56 How then can it be admitted or thought that they are gods? are safe from neither thieves nor bandits, these wooden and silvered and gilded gods;
57 E terranno loro l'argento, e l'oro e il vestito, onde son ricoperti, e se n' anderanno; e gli dei non aiuteranno se stessi.	57 those who seize them strip off the gold and the silver, and go away with the clothing that was on them, and they cannot help themselves.
58 Perla qual cosa miglior cosa è un re, che fa mostra di suo valore, od un vaso utile nella casa, di cui si farà gloria il padrone, o la porta della casa, che custodisce quel, che in essa si trova, che i falsi dei.	58 How much better to be a king displaying his valor, or a handy tool in a house, the joy of its owner, than these false gods; or the door of a house, that keeps safe those who are within, rather than these false gods; or a wooden post in a palace, rather than these false gods!
59 Certamente il sole, e la luna, e le stelle mandate ad esser utili col loro splendore, sono ubbidienti.	59 The sun and moon and stars are bright, and obedient in the service for which they are sent.
60 Similmente anche il folgore si fa distinguere quando apparisce; e pari mente anche il vento spira in ogni regione.	60 Likewise the lightning, when it flashes, is a goodly sight; and the same wind blows over all the land.
61 E le nuvole quando è lor comandato da Dio di scorrere tutto l'orbe, fanno quel, che fu lor comandato.	61 The clouds, too, when commanded by God to proceed across the whole world, fulfill the order;
62 Il fuoco ancora mandato di sopra a consumare i monti, e le selve, fa quel, che gli fu ordinato. Ma costoro né per bellezza, né per virtudi sono simili ad una di queste cose:	62 and fire, sent from on high to burn up the mountains and the forests, does what has been commanded. But these false gods are not their equal, whether in beauty or in power;
63 Per la qual cosa da pensarsi non è, né da dirsi, che questi siano dei, mentre non possono né far giustizia, né far cosa alcuna agli uomini.	63 so that it is unthinkable, and cannot be claimed, that they are gods. They can neither execute judgment, nor benefit man.
64 Conoscendo pertanto, che ei non son dei, voi perciò non li temete;	64 Know, therefore, that they are not gods, and do not fear them.
65 Imperocché eglino non manderanno maledizione ai regi, né benedizione.	65 Kings they neither curse nor bless.
66 Ei non mostrano a' popoli nel cielo i segni de' tempi: né splenderan come il sole, né faran lume come la luna.	66 They show the nations no signs in the heavens, nor are they brilliant like the sun, nor shining like the moon.
67 Da più di loro sono le bestie, che possono fuggire al coperto, e giovare a se stesse.	67 The beasts which can help themselves by fleeing to shelter are better than they are.
68 In verun modo adunque non sono, dei, com'è manifesto: per questo adunque non li temete;	68 Thus in no way is it clear to us that they are gods; so do not fear them.
69 Imperocché siccome in un cocomeraio uno spauracchio non è buona guardia, cosi sono i loro dei di legno, d'argento, e d'oro.	69 For like a scarecrow in a cucumber patch, that is no protection, are their wooden, gilded, silvered gods.
70 E nella stessa guisa succede della vitalba in un orto, sulla quale vanno posarsi tutti gli uccelli. Simili ancora son questi loro dei di legno, e indorati, e inargentati ad un morto gittato tralle tenebre.	70 Just like a thornbush in a garden on which perches every kind of bird, or like a corpse hurled into darkness, are their silvered and gilded wooden gods.
71 Dalla porpora ancora, e dallo scarlatto, che intignono addosso a loro, imparerete di certo, ch'ei non sou dei. Eglino stessi finalmente saran mangiati, e saranno l'obbrobrio d'ogni paese.	71 From the rotting of the purple and the linen upon them, it can be known that they are not gods; they themselves will in the end be comsumed, and be a disgrace in the land.
72 Migliore è l'uomo giusto, che non ha idoli: perocché egli sarà lungi dall'ignominia.	72 The better for the just man who has no idols: he shall be far from disgrace!
