1 ALEPH. Come mai si è oscurato l'oro, il suo bel colore si è cangiato, sono disperse le pietre del santuario pegli angoli di tutte le piazze?	1 How tarnished is the gold, how changed the noble metal; How the sacred stones lie strewn at every street corner!
2 BETH. I figliuoli illustri di Sion, che eran vestiti di oro finissimo, come mai sono stimati quasi vasi di terra cotta, lavoro di uno stovigliaio?	2 Zion's precious sons, fine gold their counterpart, Now worth no more than earthen jars made by the hands of a potter!
3 GHIMEL. Ma le la mie stesse scuoprono le loro mammelle, allattano i loro parti: crudele la figlia del popol mio, che imita lo struzzolo del deserto.	3 Even the jackals bare their breasts and suckle their young; The daughter of my people has become as cruel as the ostrich in the desert.
4 DALETH. La lingua del bambino di latte rimase attaccata al palato di lui per la sete: i fanciulli domandavan del pane, e non era chi lor lo spezzasse.	4 The tongue of the suckling cleaves to the roof of its mouth in thirst; The babes cry for food, but there is no one to give it to them.
5 HE. Quelli, che banchettavano tralle delizie, son periti in mezzo alle strade: quegli, che erano stati allevati nella porpora, hanno brancicato lo sterco.	5 Those accustomed to dainty food perish in the streets; Those brought up in purple now cling to the ash heaps.
6 VAU. Ed è stata maggiore l'iniquità della figlia del popol mio, che il peccato di Sodoma, la quale fu atterrata in un punto, e mano di uomo non principiò a minarla.	6 The punishment of the daughter of my people is greater than the penalty of Sodom, Which was overthrown in an instant without the turning of a hand.
7 ZAIN. I suoi Nazaret eran più candidi che la neve più puri del latte, rosseggiaci più dell'avorio, più belli dei saffiri.	7 Brighter than snow were her princes, whiter than milk, More ruddy than coral, more precious than sapphire.
8 HETH. La loro faccia è più nera dei carboni, e non si riconoscono pelle strade: la loro pelle è attaccata alle ossa, e in aridita, e fatta simile al legno.	8 Now their appearance is blacker than soot, they are unrecognized on the streets; Their skin shrinks on their bones, as dry as wood.
9 TETH. Migliore fu la condizione di que', che furon uccisi di spada, che di quelli, che moriron di fame: perocché questi si strussero consunti per la sterilità della terra.	9 Better for those who perish by the sword than for those who die of hunger, Who waste away, as though pierced through, lacking the fruits of the field!
10 JOD. Le mani delle donne compassionevoli misero a cuocere i loro figli; questi furono il loro cibo nella calamità della figlia del popol mio.	10 The hands of compassionate women boiled their own children, To serve them as mourners' food in the downfall of the daughter of my people.
11 CAPH. Il Signore ha sfogato il suo furore, ha versata l'ira di sua indignazione, ha acceso in Sion il fuoco, che ha divorate le sue fondamenta.	11 The LORD has spent his anger, poured out his blazing wrath; He has kindled a fire in Zion that has consumed her foundations.
12 LAMED. Non credevano i re della terra, e gli abitatori tutti del mondo, che il nemico, e l'avversario entrerebbe nelle porte di Gerusalemme;	12 The kings of the earth did not believe, nor any of the world's inhabitants, That enemy or foe could enter the gates of Jerusalem.
13 MEM. Pe' peccati, e pelle iniquità de' suoi profeti, e de suoi sacerdoti, i quali sparsero in mezzo a lei il sangue de' giusti.	13 Because of the sins of her prophets and the crimes of her priests, Who shed in her midst the blood of the just!--
14 NUN. Andavano errando quai ciechi pelle piazze, lordati di sangue, e non potend' altro, si alzavan le estremità della veste:	14 They staggered blindly in the streets, soiled with blood, So that people could not touch even their garments:
15 SAMECH. Ritiratevi impuri che siete, dicevan gridando agli altri, ritiratevi, andate via, non ci toccate: perocché hanno fatta rissa, e sdegnati disser tralle nazioni: Ei non abiterà più tra di loro.	15 "Away you unclean!" they cried to them, "Away, away, do not draw near!" If they left and wandered among the nations, nowhere could they remain.
16 PHE. La faccia (irata) del Signore gli ha dispersi: ei non volgerà più ad esse il suo sguardo: non hanno avuto rispetto alla faccia de' sacerdoti, né hanno avuto compassione pe' seniori.	16 The LORD himself has dispersed them, he regards them no more; He does not receive the priests with favor, nor show kindness to the elders.
17 AIN. Quando noi oravamo tuttora in piedi, si stancarono gli occhi nostri rivolti al vano soccorso nostro, e ad una nazione, che non poteva salvarci.	17 Our eyes ever wasted away, looking in vain for aid; From our watchtower we watched for a nation that could not save us.
18 SADE. I nostri piedi trovavano inciampo nell'andar pelle nostre piazze, il nostro fine si appressò, i nostri giorni si son compiuti, perchè è venuto il nostro termine.	18 Men dogged our steps so that we could not walk in our streets; Our end drew near, and came; our time had expired.
19 COPH. I nemici nostri furono più veloci, che le aquile del cielo, ci hanno per seguitati pelle montagne, ci hanno tese insidie nel deserto.	19 Our pursuers were swifter than eagles in the air, They harassed us on the mountains and waylaid us in the desert.
20 RES. Il Cristo, il Signore, spirito di nostra bocca e stato preso pe' nostri peccati: cui noi abbiam detto: all'ombra tua viveremo tralle nazioni.	20 The anointed one of the LORD, our breath of life, was caught in their snares, He in whose shadow we thought we could live on among the nations.
21 SIN. Rallegrati, e fa festa, o figlia di Edom, che abiti nella terra di Hus: a te ancora giungerà il calice, sarai inebriata, e denudata.	21 Though you rejoice and are glad, O daughter Edom, you who dwell in the land of Uz, To you also shall the cup be passed; you shall become drunk and naked.
22 THAU. La tua iniquità ha un termine, o figlia di Sion: ei non ti farà più cangiar di paese. Egli punirà la tua iniquità, o figlia di Edom, discoprirà i tuoi peccati.	22 Your chastisement is completed, O daughter Zion, he will not prolong your exile; But your wickedness, O daughter Edom, he will punish, he will lay bare your sins.
