1 Quando il Signore venne a sapere che i farisei avevan sentito dire: Gesù fa più discepoli e battezza più di Giovanni	1 When Jesus heard that the Pharisees had found out that he was making and baptising more disciplesthan John-
2 - sebbene non fosse Gesù in persona che battezzava, ma i suoi discepoli -,	2 though in fact it was his disciples who baptised, not Jesus himself-
3 lasciò la Giudea e si diresse di nuovo verso la Galilea.	3 he left Judaea and went back to Galilee.
4 Doveva perciò attraversare la Samarìa.	4 He had to pass through Samaria.
5 Giunse pertanto ad una città della Samarìa chiamata Sicàr, vicina al terreno che Giacobbe aveva dato a Giuseppe suo figlio:	5 On the way he came to the Samaritan town cal ed Sychar near the land that Jacob gave to his sonJoseph.
6 qui c'era il pozzo di Giacobbe. Gesù dunque, stanco del viaggio, sedeva presso il pozzo. Era verso mezzogiorno.	6 Jacob's wel was there and Jesus, tired by the journey, sat down by the wel . It was about the sixth hour.
7 Arrivò intanto una donna di Samarìa ad attingere acqua. Le disse Gesù: "Dammi da bere".	7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, 'Give me something to drink.'
8 I suoi discepoli infatti erano andati in città a far provvista di cibi.	8 His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.
9 Ma la Samaritana gli disse: "Come mai tu, che sei Giudeo, chiedi da bere a me, che sono una donna samaritana?". I Giudei infatti non mantengono buone relazioni con i Samaritani.	9 The Samaritan woman said to him, 'You are a Jew. How is it that you ask me, a Samaritan, forsomething to drink?' -- Jews, of course, do not associate with Samaritans.
10 Gesù le rispose: "Se tu conoscessi il dono di Dio e chi è colui che ti dice: "Dammi da bere!", tu stesso gliene avresti chiesto ed egli ti avrebbe dato acqua viva".	10 Jesus replied to her: If you only knew what God is offering and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give mesomething to drink,' you would have been the one to ask, and he would have given you living water.
11 Gli disse la donna: "Signore, tu non hai un mezzo per attingere e il pozzo è profondo; da dove hai dunque quest'acqua viva?	11 'You have no bucket, sir,' she answered, 'and the well is deep: how do you get this living water?
12 Sei tu forse più grande del nostro padre Giacobbe, che ci diede questo pozzo e ne bevve lui con i suoi figli e il suo gregge?".	12 Are you a greater man than our father Jacob, who gave us this wel and drank from it himself with hissons and his cattle?'
13 Rispose Gesù: "Chiunque beve di quest'acqua avrà di nuovo sete;	13 Jesus replied: Whoever drinks this water wil be thirsty again;
14 ma chi beve dell'acqua che io gli darò, non avrà mai più sete, anzi, l'acqua che io gli darò diventerà in lui sorgente di acqua che zampilla per la vita eterna".	14 but no one who drinks the water that I shal give wil ever be thirsty again: the water that I shal give wil become a spring of water within, welling up for eternal life.
15 "Signore, gli disse la donna, dammi di quest'acqua, perché non abbia più sete e non continui a venire qui ad attingere acqua".	15 'Sir,' said the woman, 'give me some of that water, so that I may never be thirsty or come here again todraw water.'
16 Le disse: "Va' a chiamare tuo marito e poi ritorna qui".	16 'Go and call your husband,' said Jesus to her, 'and come back here.'
17 Rispose la donna: "Non ho marito". Le disse Gesù: "Hai detto bene "non ho marito";	17 The woman answered, 'I have no husband.' Jesus said to her, 'You are right to say, "I have nohusband";
18 infatti hai avuto cinque mariti e quello che hai ora non è tuo marito; in questo hai detto il vero".	18 for although you have had five, the one you now have is not your husband. You spoke the truth there.'
19 Gli replicò la donna: "Signore, vedo che tu sei un profeta.	19 'I see you are a prophet, sir,' said the woman.
20 I nostri padri hanno adorato Dio sopra questo monte e voi dite che è Gerusalemme il luogo in cui bisogna adorare".	20 'Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, though you say that Jerusalem is the place where one oughtto worship.'
21 Gesù le dice: "Credimi, donna, è giunto il momento in cui né su questo monte, né in Gerusalemme adorerete il Padre.	21 Jesus said: Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you wil worship the Father neither on thismountain nor in Jerusalem.
22 Voi adorate quel che non conoscete, noi adoriamo quello che conosciamo, perché la salvezza viene dai Giudei.	22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know; for salvation comes from the Jews.
23 Ma è giunto il momento, ed è questo, in cui i veri adoratori adoreranno il Padre in spirito e verità; perché il Padre cerca tali adoratori.	23 But the hour is coming -- indeed is already here -- when true worshippers wil worship the Father inspirit and truth: that is the kind of worshipper the Father seeks.
24 Dio è spirito, e quelli che lo adorano devono adorarlo in spirito e verità".	24 God is spirit, and those who worship must worship in spirit and truth.
25 Gli rispose la donna: "So che deve venire il Messia (cioè il Cristo): quando egli verrà, ci annunzierà ogni cosa".	25 The woman said to him, 'I know that Messiah -- that is, Christ -- is coming; and when he comes he wilexplain everything.'
26 Le disse Gesù: "Sono io, che ti parlo".	26 Jesus said, 'That is who I am, I who speak to you.'
27 In quel momento giunsero i suoi discepoli e si meravigliarono che stesse a discorrere con una donna. Nessuno tuttavia gli disse: "Che desideri?", o: "Perché parli con lei?".	27 At this point his disciples returned and were surprised to find him speaking to a woman, though noneof them asked, 'What do you want from her?' or, 'What are you talking to her about?'
28 La donna intanto lasciò la brocca, andò in città e disse alla gente:	28 The woman put down her water jar and hurried back to the town to tel the people,
29 "Venite a vedere un uomo che mi ha detto tutto quello che ho fatto. Che sia forse il Messia?".	29 'Come and see a man who has told me everything I have done; could this be the Christ?'
30 Uscirono allora dalla città e andavano da lui.	30 This brought people out of the town and they made their way towards him.
31 Intanto i discepoli lo pregavano: "Rabbì, mangia".	31 Meanwhile, the disciples were urging him, 'Rabbi, do have something to eat';
32 Ma egli rispose: "Ho da mangiare un cibo che voi non conoscete".	32 but he said, 'I have food to eat that you do not know about.'
33 E i discepoli si domandavano l'un l'altro: "Qualcuno forse gli ha portato da mangiare?".	33 So the disciples said to one another, 'Has someone brought him food?'
34 Gesù disse loro: "Mio cibo è fare la volontà di colui che mi ha mandato e compiere la sua opera.	34 But Jesus said: My food is to do the will of the one who sent me, and to complete his work.
35 Non dite voi: Ci sono ancora quattro mesi e poi viene la mietitura? Ecco, io vi dico: Levate i vostri occhi e guardate i campi che già biondeggiano per la mietitura.	35 Do you not have a saying: Four months and then the harvest? Wel , I tel you, look around you, look atthe fields; already they are white, ready for harvest!
36 E chi miete riceve salario e raccoglie frutto per la vita eterna, perché ne goda insieme chi semina e chi miete.	36 Already the reaper is being paid his wages, already he is bringing in the grain for eternal life, so thatsower and reaper can rejoice together.
37 Qui infatti si realizza il detto: uno semina e uno miete.	37 For here the proverb holds true: one sows, another reaps;
38 Io vi ho mandati a mietere ciò che voi non avete lavorato; altri hanno lavorato e voi siete subentrati nel loro lavoro".	38 I sent you to reap a harvest you have not laboured for. Others have laboured for it; and you have comeinto the rewards of their labour.
39 Molti Samaritani di quella città credettero in lui per le parole della donna che dichiarava: "Mi ha detto tutto quello che ho fatto".	39 Many Samaritans of that town believed in him on the strength of the woman's words of testimony, 'Hetold me everything I have done.'
40 E quando i Samaritani giunsero da lui, lo pregarono di fermarsi con loro ed egli vi rimase due giorni.	40 So, when the Samaritans came up to him, they begged him to stay with them. He stayed for two days,and
41 Molti di più credettero per la sua parola	41 many more came to believe on the strength of the words he spoke to them;
42 e dicevano alla donna: "Non è più per la tua parola che noi crediamo; ma perché noi stessi abbiamo udito e sappiamo che questi è veramente il salvatore del mondo".	42 and they said to the woman, 'Now we believe no longer because of what you told us; we have heardhim ourselves and we know that he is indeed the Saviour of the world.'
43 Trascorsi due giorni, partì di là per andare in Galilea.	43 When the two days were over Jesus left for Galilee.
44 Ma Gesù stesso aveva dichiarato che un profeta non riceve onore nella sua patria.	44 He himself had declared that a prophet is not honoured in his own home town.
45 Quando però giunse in Galilea, i Galilei lo accolsero con gioia, poiché avevano visto tutto quello che aveva fatto a Gerusalemme durante la festa; anch'essi infatti erano andati alla festa.	45 On his arrival the Galileans received him wel , having seen al that he had done at Jerusalem duringthe festival which they too had attended.
46 Andò dunque di nuovo a Cana di Galilea, dove aveva cambiato l'acqua in vino. Vi era un funzionario del re, che aveva un figlio malato a Cafàrnao.	46 He went again to Cana in Galilee, where he had changed the water into wine. And there was a royalofficial whose son was il at Capernaum;
47 Costui, udito che Gesù era venuto dalla Giudea in Galilea, si recò da lui e lo pregò di scendere a guarire suo figlio poiché stava per morire.	47 hearing that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judaea, he went and asked him to come and cure hisson, as he was at the point of death.
48 Gesù gli disse: "Se non vedete segni e prodigi, voi non credete".	48 Jesus said to him, 'Unless you see signs and portents you will not believe!'
49 Ma il funzionario del re insistette: "Signore, scendi prima che il mio bambino muoia".	49 'Sir,' answered the official, 'come down before my child dies.'
50 Gesù gli risponde: "Va', tuo figlio vive". Quell'uomo credette alla parola che gli aveva detto Gesù e si mise in cammino.	50 'Go home,' said Jesus, 'your son wil live.' The man believed what Jesus had said and went on his wayhome;
51 Proprio mentre scendeva, gli vennero incontro i servi a dirgli: "Tuo figlio vive!".	51 and while he was stil on the way his servants met him with the news that his boy was alive.
52 S'informò poi a che ora avesse cominciato a star meglio. Gli dissero: "Ieri, un'ora dopo mezzogiorno la febbre lo ha lasciato".	52 He asked them when the boy had begun to recover. They replied, 'The fever left him yesterday at theseventh hour.'
53 Il padre riconobbe che proprio in quell'ora Gesù gli aveva detto: "Tuo figlio vive" e credette lui con tutta la sua famiglia.	53 The father realised that this was exactly the time when Jesus had said, 'Your son wil live'; and he andal his household believed.
54 Questo fu il secondo miracolo che Gesù fece tornando dalla Giudea in Galilea.	54 This new sign, the second, Jesus performed on his return from Judaea to Galilee.
