Siracide 13

JERUSALEM	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Qui touche à la poix s'englue, qui fréquente l'orgueilleux en vient à lui ressembler.	1 He who touches pitch blackens his hand; he who associates with an impious man learns his ways.
2 Ne te charge pas d'un lourd fardeau, ne te lie pas à plus fort et plus riche que toi. Pourquoimettre le pot de terre avec le pot de fer? S'il le heurte il se brisera.	2 Bear no burden too heavy for you; go with no one greater or wealthier than yourself. How can the earthen pot go with the metal cauldron? When they knock together, the pot will be smashed:
3 Le riche commet une injustice, il prend de grands airs; le pauvre est lésé, il se fait suppliant.	3 The rich man does wrong and boasts of it, the poor man is wronged and begs forgiveness.
4 Si tu lui es utile il se sert de toi, si tu fais défaut, il s'écartera de toi.	4 As long as the rich man can use you he will enslave you, but when you are exhausted, he will abandon you.
5 As-tu quelque bien? Il vivra avec toi, il te dépouillera sans aucun remords.	5 As long as you have anything he will speak fair words to you, and with smiles he will win your confidence;
6 A-t-il besoin de toi? Il t'enjôlera, te fera des sourires et te donnera de l'espoir, il t'adresserade bonnes paroles et dira: "De quoi as-tu besoin?"	6 When he needs something from you he will cajole you, then without regret he will impoverish you.
7 Il t'humiliera au cours de ses festins, jusqu'à te dépouiller par deux et trois fois, et pour finiril se moquera de toi. Puis s'il t'aperçoit il s'écartera de toi en hochant la tête à ton sujet.	7 While it serves his purpose he will beguile you, then twice or three times he will terrify you; When later he sees you he will pass you by, and shake his head over you.
8 Prends garde de ne pas te laisser séduire, pour ne pas être humilié dans ta sottise.	8 Guard against being presumptuous; be not as those who lack sense.
9 Quand un grand t'appelle, dérobe-toi, il t'appellera de plus belle.	9 When invited by a man of influence, keep your distance; then he will urge you all the more.
10 Ne te précipite pas, de peur d'être repoussé; ne te tiens pas trop loin, de peur d'être oublié.	10 Be not bold with him lest you be rebuffed, but keep not too far away lest you be forgotten.
11 Ne t'avise pas d'être familier avec lui, ne te fie pas à sa faconde. Par son verbiage il te metà l'épreuve, comme en se jouant il s'informe.	11 Engage not freely in discussion with him, trust not his many words; For by prolonged talk he will test you, and though smiling he will probe you.
12 Impitoyable est celui qui colporte les propos; il ne t'épargne ni les coups ni les chaînes.	12 Mercilessly he will make of you a laughingstock, and will not refrain from injury or chains.
13 Prends garde et fais bien attention, car tu chemines en compagnie de ta propre ruine.	13 Be on your guard and take care never to accompany men of violence.
	14 Every living thing loves its own kind, every man a man like himself.
15 Tout être vivant aime son semblable et tout homme son prochain.	15 Every being is drawn to its own kind; with his own kind every man associates.
16 Toute bête s'accouple selon son espèce et l'homme s'associe à son semblable.	16 Is a wolf ever allied with a lamb? So it is with the sinner and the just.
17 Comment pourraient s'entendre le loup et l'agneau? Ainsi en est-il du pécheur et del'homme pieux.	17 Can there be peace between the hyena and the dog? Or between the rich and the poor can there be peace?
18 Quelle paix peut-il y avoir entre l'hyène et le chien? Et quelle paix entre le riche et lepauvre?	18 Lion's prey are the wild asses of the desert; so too the poor are feeding grounds for the rich.
19 Les onagres au désert sont le gibier des lions, ainsi les pauvres sont la proie des riches.	19 A proud man abhors lowliness; so does the rich man abhor the poor.
20 Pour l'orgueilleux l'humilité est une abjection: ainsi le riche a le pauvre en horreur.	20 When a rich man stumbles he is supported by a friend; when a poor man trips he is pushed down by a friend.
21 Quand le riche fait un faux pas, ses amis le soutiennent; quand le malheureux fait unechute, ses amis le rejettent.	21 Many are the supporters for a rich man when he speaks; though what he says is odious, it wins approval. When a poor man speaks they make sport of him; he speaks wisely and no attention is paid him.
22 Quand le riche trébuche, beaucoup le reçoivent dans leurs bras, s'il dit des sottises, on lefélicite. Quand le malheureux trébuche, on lui fait des reproches, s'il dit des choses sensées, il n'y a pas de placepour lui.	22 A rich man speaks and all are silent, his wisdom they extol to the clouds. A poor man speaks and they say: "Who is that?" If he slips they cast him down.
23 Quand le riche parle, tous se taisent et l'on porte aux nues son discours. Quand le pauvreparle, on dit: "Qui est-ce?" Et s'il achoppe on le jette par terre.	23 Wealth is good when there is no sin; but poverty is evil by the standards of the proud.
24 La richesse est bonne quand elle est sans péché, la pauvreté est mauvaise aux dires del'impie.	24 The heart of a man changes his countenance, either for good or for evil.
25 Le coeur de l'homme modèle son visage soit en bien soit en mal.	25 The sign of a good heart is a cheerful countenance; withdrawn and perplexed is the laborious schemer.
