NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
The portion falling to the tribe of the sons of Judah, by clans, was near the frontier of Edom, from thedesert of Zin southwards to Kadesh in the south.1 The lot for the clans of the Judahite tribe fell in the extreme south toward the boundary of Edom, the desert of Zin in the Negeb.
Their southern frontier began at the tip of the Salt Sea, at the southerly bay;2 The boundary there ran from the bay that forms the southern end of the Salt Sea,
it proceeded south of the Ascent of Scorpions, crossed Zin and came up to Kadesh-Barnea from thesouth; past Hezron, it went on to Addar and turned towards Karka;3 southward below the pass of Akrabbim, across through Zin, up to a point south of Kadesh-barnea, across to Hezron, and up to Addar; from there, looping around Karka,
the frontier then went on to Azmon, came out at the Torrent of Egypt and reached as far as the sea. This is to be your southern frontier.4 it crossed to Azmon and then joined the Wadi of Egypt before coming out at the sea. (This is your southern boundary.)
The eastern frontier was the Salt Sea as far as the mouth of the Jordan.5 The eastern boundary was the Salt Sea as far as the mouth of the Jordan.
The northern boundary began at the bay at the mouth of the Jordan. The boundary went up to Beth-Hoglah, passed north of Beth-ha-Arabah and went on to the Stone of Bohan son of Reuben.6 The northern boundary climbed from the bay where the Jordan meets the sea, up to Beth-hoglah, and ran north of Beth-arabah, up to Eben-Bohan-ben-Reuben.
The boundary then went on to Debir from the Vale of Achor and turned north towards the stone circleopposite the Ascent of Adummim, which is south of the Torrent; the boundary went on to the Waters of En-Shemesh and came out at En-Rogel.7 Thence it climbed to Debir, north of the vale of Achor, in the direction of the Gilgal that faces the pass of Adummim, on the south side of the wadi; from there it crossed to the waters of En-shemesh and emerged at En-rogel.
It then went back up the Val ey of Hinnom, coming from the south to the flank of the Jebusite -- that is,Jerusalem -- and climbed to the crest of the mountain barring the Valley of Hinnom to the west, at the northernend of the Val ey of the Rephaim.8 Climbing again to the Valley of Ben-hinnom on the southern flank of the Jebusites (that is, Jerusalem), the boundary rose to the top of the mountain at the northern end of the Valley of Rephaim, which bounds the Valley of Hinnom on the west.
From the mountain top, the boundary curved round to the spring of the Waters of Nephtoah, went on tothe towns of Mount Ephron and then turned towards Baalah -- that is, Kiriath-Jearim.9 From the top of the mountain it ran to the fountain of waters of Nephtoah, extended to the cities of Mount Ephron, and continued to Baalah, or Kiriath-jearim.
From Baalah, the boundary curved westwards to the highlands of Seir, skirted the northern slope ofMount Jearim -- that is, Chesalon -- went down to Beth-Shemesh and through Timnah,10 From Baalah the boundary curved westward to Mount Seir and passed north of the ridge of Mount Jearim (that is, Chesalon); thence it descended to Beth-shemesh, and ran across to Timnah.
came out on the northern flank of Ekron, turned towards Shikkeron and, passing through thehighlands of Baalah, came out at Jabneel, and reached as far as the sea.11 It then extended along the northern flank of Ekron, continued through Shikkeron, and across to Mount Baalah, thence to include Jabneel, before it came out at the sea.
The western boundary was the Great Sea itself. Such was the frontier surrounding the sons of Judah,by clans.12 The western boundary was the Great Sea and its coast. This was the complete boundary of the clans of the Judahites.
Caleb son of Jephunneh was given a share within that of the sons of Judah, in accordance withYahweh's order to Joshua: Kiriath-Arba, the town of the father of Anak -- that is, Hebron.13 As the LORD had commanded, Joshua gave Caleb, son of Jephunneh, a portion among the Judahites, namely, Kiriath-arba (Arba was the father of Anak), that is, Hebron.
Caleb drove out the three sons of Anak: Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai, descended from Anak.14 And Caleb drove out from there the three Anakim, the descendants of Anak: Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai.
From there he marched on the inhabitants of Debir; Debir in olden days was cal ed Kiriath-Sepher.15 From there he marched up against the inhabitants of Debir, which was formerly called Kiriath-sepher.
Caleb then said, 'To the man who attacks and takes Kiriath-Sepher, I shal give my daughter Achsahas wife.'16 Caleb said, "I will give my daughter Achsah in marriage to the one who attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it."
The man who captured it was Othniel son of Kenaz, brother of Caleb, who gave him his daughterAchsah as wife.17 Othniel, son of Caleb's brother Kenaz, captured it, and so Caleb gave him his daughter Achsah in marriage.
When she arrived, he urged her to ask her father for arable land, but when she alighted from thedonkey and Caleb asked her, 'What is the matter?'18 On the day of her marriage to Othniel, she induced him to ask her father for some land. Then, as she alighted from the ass, Caleb asked her, "What is troubling you?"
she said to him, 'Grant me a blessing! As the land you have given me is the Negeb, give me springsof water too!' So Caleb gave her what she wanted, the upper springs and the lower springs.19 She answered, "Give me an additional gift! Since you have assigned to me land in the Negeb, give me also pools of water." So he gave her the upper and the lower pools.
