Six days before the Passover, Jesus went to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom he had raised fromthe dead.1 Na sześć dni przed Paschą Jezus przybył do Betanii, gdzie mieszkał Łazarz, którego Jezus wskrzesił z martwych.
They gave a dinner for him there; Martha waited on them and Lazarus was among those at table.2 Urządzono tam dla Niego ucztę. Marta posługiwała, a Łazarz był jednym z zasiadających z Nim przy stole.
Mary brought in a pound of very costly ointment, pure nard, and with it anointed the feet of Jesus, wiping them with her hair; the house was fil ed with the scent of the ointment.3 Maria zaś wzięła funt szlachetnego i drogocennego olejku nardowego i namaściła Jezusowi nogi, a włosami swymi je otarła. A dom napełnił się wonią olejku.
Then Judas Iscariot -- one of his disciples, the man who was to betray him-said,4 Na to rzekł Judasz Iskariota, jeden z uczniów Jego, ten, który miał Go wydać:
'Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denari and the money given to the poor?'5 Czemu to nie sprzedano tego olejku za trzysta denarów i nie rozdano ich ubogim?
He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he was in charge of thecommon fund and used to help himself to the contents.6 Powiedział zaś to nie dlatego, jakoby dbał o biednych, ale ponieważ był złodziejem, i mając trzos wykradał to, co składano.
So Jesus said, 'Leave her alone; let her keep it for the day of my burial.7 Na to Jezus powiedział: Zostaw ją! Przechowała to, aby /Mnie namaścić/ na dzień mojego pogrzebu.
You have the poor with you always, you wil not always have me.'8 Bo ubogich zawsze macie u siebie, ale Mnie nie zawsze macie.
Meanwhile a large number of Jews heard that he was there and came not only on account of Jesusbut also to see Lazarus whom he had raised from the dead.9 Wielki tłum Żydów dowiedział się, że tam jest; a przybyli nie tylko ze względu na Jezusa, ale także by ujrzeć Łazarza, którego wskrzesił z martwych.
Then the chief priests decided to kill Lazarus as well,10 Arcykapłani zatem postanowili stracić również Łazarza,
since it was on his account that many of the Jews were leaving them and believing in Jesus.11 Gdyż wielu z jego powodu odłączyło się od Żydów i uwierzyło w Jezusa.
The next day the great crowd of people who had come up for the festival heard that Jesus was on hisway to Jerusalem.12 Nazajutrz wielki tłum, który przybył na święto, usłyszawszy, że Jezus przybywa do Jerozolimy,
They took branches of palm and went out to receive him, shouting: 'Hosanna! Blessed is he who iscoming in the name of the Lord, the king of Israel.'13 wziął gałązki palmowe i wybiegł Mu naprzeciw. Wołali: Hosanna! Błogosławiony, który przychodzi w imię Pańskie oraz Król izraelski!
Jesus found a young donkey and mounted it -- as scripture says:14 A gdy Jezus znalazł osiołka, dosiadł go, jak jest napisane:
Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion; look, your king is approaching, riding on the foal of a donkey.15 Nie bój się, Córo Syjońska! Oto Król twój przychodzi, siedząc na oślęciu.
At first his disciples did not understand this, but later, after Jesus had been glorified, theyremembered that this had been written about him and that this was what had happened to him.16 Z początku Jego uczniowie tego nie zrozumieli. Ale gdy Jezus został uwielbiony, wówczas przypomnieli sobie, że to o Nim było napisane i że tak Mu uczynili.
The crowd who had been with him when he cal ed Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from thedead kept bearing witness to it;17 Dawał więc świadectwo ten tłum, który był z Nim wówczas, kiedy Łazarza z grobu wywołał i wskrzesił z martwych.
this was another reason why the crowd came out to receive him: they had heard that he had giventhis sign.18 Dlatego też tłum wyszedł Mu na spotkanie, ponieważ usłyszał, że ten znak uczynił.
Then the Pharisees said to one another, 'You see, you are making no progress; look, the whole worldhas gone after him!'19 Faryzeusze zaś mówili jeden do drugiego: Widzicie, że nic nie zyskujecie? Patrz - świat poszedł za Nim.
Among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks.20 A wśród tych, którzy przybyli, aby oddać pokłon /Bogu/ w czasie święta, byli też niektórzy Grecy.
These approached Philip, who came from Bethsaida in Galilee, and put this request to him, 'Sir, weshould like to see Jesus.'21 Oni więc przystąpili do Filipa, pochodzącego z Betsaidy Galilejskiej, i prosili go mówiąc: Panie, chcemy ujrzeć Jezusa.
Philip went to tell Andrew, and Andrew and Philip together went to tel Jesus.22 Filip poszedł i powiedział Andrzejowi. Z kolei Andrzej i Filip poszli i powiedzieli Jezusowi.
Jesus replied to them: Now the hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified.23 A Jezus dał im taką odpowiedź: Nadeszła godzina, aby został uwielbiony Syn Człowieczy.
In all truth I tell you, unless a wheat grain fal s into the earth and dies, it remains only a single grain;but if it dies it yields a rich harvest.24 Zaprawdę, zaprawdę, powiadam wam: Jeżeli ziarno pszenicy wpadłszy w ziemię nie obumrze, zostanie tylko samo, ale jeżeli obumrze, przynosi plon obfity.
Anyone who loves his life loses it; anyone who hates his life in this world wil keep it for eternal life.25 Ten, kto kocha swoje życie, traci je, a kto nienawidzi swego życia na tym świecie, zachowa je na życie wieczne.
Whoever serves me, must fol ow me, and my servant wil be with me wherever I am. If anyone servesme, my Father wil honour him.26 A kto by chciał Mi służyć, niech idzie na Mną, a gdzie Ja jestem, tam będzie i mój sługa. A jeśli ktoś Mi służy, uczci go mój Ojciec.
Now my soul is troubled. What shal I say: Father, save me from this hour? But it is for this veryreason that I have come to this hour.27 Teraz dusza moja doznała lęku i cóż mam powiedzieć? Ojcze, wybaw Mnie od tej godziny. Nie, właśnie dlatego przyszedłem na tę godzinę.
Father, glorify your name! A voice came from heaven, 'I have glorified it, and I wil again glorify it.'28 Ojcze, wsław Twoje imię. Wtem rozległ się głos z nieba: Już wsławiłem i jeszcze wsławię.
The crowd standing by, who heard this, said it was a clap of thunder; others said, 'It was an angelspeaking to him.'29 Tłum stojący /to/ usłyszał i mówił: Zagrzmiało! Inni mówili: Anioł przemówił do Niego.
Jesus answered, 'It was not for my sake that this voice came, but for yours.30 Na to rzekł Jezus: Głos ten rozległ się nie ze względu na Mnie, ale ze względu na was.
'Now sentence is being passed on this world; now the prince of this world is to be driven out.31 Teraz odbywa się sąd nad tym światem. Teraz władca tego świata zostanie precz wyrzucony.
And when I am lifted up from the earth, I shal draw al people to myself.'32 A Ja, gdy zostanę nad ziemię wywyższony, przyciągnę wszystkich do siebie.
By these words he indicated the kind of death he would die.33 To powiedział zaznaczając, jaką śmiercią miał umrzeć.
The crowd answered, 'The Law has taught us that the Christ wil remain for ever. So how can yousay, "The Son of man must be lifted up"? Who is this Son of man?'34 Na to tłum Mu odpowiedział: Myśmy się dowiedzieli z Prawa, że Mesjasz ma trwać na wieki. Jakżeż Ty możesz mówić, że potrzeba wywyższyć Syna Człowieczego? Któż to jest ten Syn Człowieczy?
Jesus then said: The light wil be with you only a little longer now. Go on your way while you have thelight, or darkness wil overtake you, and nobody who walks in the dark knows where he is going.35 Odpowiedział im więc Jezus: Jeszcze przez krótki czas przebywa wśród was światłość. Chodźcie, dopóki macie światłość, aby was ciemność nie ogarnęła. A kto chodzi w ciemności, nie wie, dokąd idzie.
While you stil have the light, believe in the light so that you may become children of light. Having saidthis, Jesus left them and was hidden from their sight.36 Dopóki światłość macie, wierzcie w światłość, abyście byli synami światłości. To powiedział Jezus i odszedł, i ukrył się przed nimi.
Though they had been present when he gave so many signs, they did not believe in him;37 Chociaż jednak uczynił On przed nimi tak wielkie znaki, nie uwierzyli w Niego,
this was to fulfil the words of the prophet Isaiah: Lord, who has given credence to what they haveheard from us, and who has seen in it a revelation of the Lord's arm?38 aby się spełniło słowo proroka Izajasza, który rzekł: Panie, któż uwierzył naszemu głosowi? A ramię Pańskie komu zostało objawione?
Indeed, they were unable to believe because, as Isaiah says again:39 Dlatego nie mogli uwierzyć, ponieważ znów rzekł Izajasz:
He has blinded their eyes, he has hardened their heart, to prevent them from using their eyes to see, using their heart to understand, changing their ways and being healed by me.40 Zaślepił ich oczy i twardym uczynił ich serce, żeby nie widzieli oczami oraz nie poznali sercem i nie nawrócili się, ażebym ich uzdrowił.
Isaiah said this because he saw his glory, and his words referred to Jesus.41 Tak powiedział Izajasz, ponieważ ujrzał chwałę Jego i o Nim mówił.
And yet there were many who did believe in him, even among the leading men, but they did not admitit, because of the Pharisees and for fear of being banned from the synagogue:42 Niemniej jednak i spośród przywódców wielu w Niego uwierzyło, ale z obawy przed faryzeuszami nie przyznawali się, aby ich nie wyłączono z synagogi.
they put human glory before God's glory.43 Bardziej bowiem umiłowali chwałę ludzką aniżeli chwałę Bożą.
Jesus declared publicly: Whoever believes in me believes not in me but in the one who sent me,44 Jezus zaś tak wołał: Ten, kto we Mnie wierzy, wierzy nie we Mnie, lecz w Tego, który Mnie posłał.
and whoever sees me, sees the one who sent me.45 A kto Mnie widzi, widzi Tego, który Mnie posłał.
I have come into the world as light, to prevent anyone who believes in me from staying in the darkany more.46 Ja przyszedłem na świat jako światło, aby każdy, kto we Mnie wierzy, nie pozostawał w ciemności.
If anyone hears my words and does not keep them faithful y, it is not I who shal judge such a person, since I have come not to judge the world, but to save the world:47 A jeżeli ktoś posłyszy słowa moje, ale ich nie zachowa, to Ja go nie sądzę. Nie przyszedłem bowiem po to, aby świat sądzić, ale aby świat zbawić.
anyone who rejects me and refuses my words has his judge already: the word itself that I havespoken wil be his judge on the last day.48 Kto gardzi Mną i nie przyjmuje słów moich, ten ma swego sędziego: słowo, które powiedziałem, ono to będzie go sądzić w dniu ostatecznym.
For I have not spoken of my own accord; but the Father who sent me commanded me what to sayand what to speak,49 Nie mówiłem bowiem sam od siebie, ale Ten, który Mnie posłał, Ojciec, On Mi nakazał, co mam powiedzieć i oznajmić.
and I know that his commands mean eternal life. And therefore what the Father has told me is what Ispeak.50 A wiem, że przykazanie Jego jest życiem wiecznym. To, co mówię, mówię tak, jak Mi Ojciec powiedział.
