The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.1 The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
It is written in the prophet Isaiah: Look, I am going to send my messenger in front of you to prepare yourway before you.2 As it has been written by the prophet Isaiah: “Behold, I send my Angel before your face, who shall prepare your way before you.
A voice of one that cries in the desert: Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight.3 The voice of one crying out in the desert: Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight his paths.”
John the Baptist was in the desert, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.4 John was in the desert, baptizing and preaching a baptism of repentance, as a remission of sins.
All Judaea and all the people of Jerusalem made their way to him, and as they were baptised by him inthe river Jordan they confessed their sins.5 And there went out to him all the region of Judea and all those of Jerusalem, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
John wore a garment of camel-skin, and he lived on locusts and wild honey.6 And John was clothed with camel’s hair and with a leather belt around his waist. And he ate locusts and wild honey.
In the course of his preaching he said, 'After me is coming someone who is more powerful than me, andI am not fit to kneel down and undo the strap of his sandals.7 And he preached, saying: “A stronger one comes after me. I am not worthy to reach down and loosen the laces of his shoes.
I have baptised you with water, but he wil baptise you with the Holy Spirit.'8 I have baptized you with water. Yet truly, he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
It was at this time that Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptised in the Jordan by John.9 And it happened that, in those days, Jesus arrived from Nazareth of Galilee. And he was baptized by John in the Jordan.
And at once, as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit, likea dove, descending on him.10 And immediately, upon ascending from the water, he saw the heavens opened and the Spirit, like a dove, descending, and remaining with him.
And a voice came from heaven, 'You are my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on you.'11 And there was a voice from heaven: “You are my beloved Son; in you I am well pleased.”
And at once the Spirit drove him into the desert12 And immediately the Spirit prompted him into the desert.
and he remained there for forty days, and was put to the test by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels looked after him.13 And he was in the desert for forty days and forty nights. And he was tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the Angels ministered to him.
After John had been arrested, Jesus went into Galilee. There he proclaimed the gospel from Godsaying,14 Then, after John was handed over, Jesus went into Galilee, preaching the Gospel of the kingdom of God,
'The time is fulfil ed, and the kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the gospel.'15 and saying: “For the time has been fulfilled and the kingdom of God has drawn near. Repent and believe in the Gospel.”
As he was walking along by the Lake of Galilee he saw Simon and Simon's brother Andrew casting anet in the lake -- for they were fishermen.16 And passing by the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew, casting nets into the sea, for they were fishermen.
And Jesus said to them, 'Come after me and I will make you into fishers of people.'17 And Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
And at once they left their nets and fol owed him.18 And at once abandoning their nets, they followed him.
Going on a little further, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John; they too were in theirboat, mending the nets.19 And continuing on a little ways from there, he saw James of Zebedee and his brother John, and they were mending their nets in a boat.
At once he called them and, leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the men he employed, theywent after him.20 And immediately he called them. And leaving behind their father Zebedee in the boat with his hired hands, they followed him.
They went as far as Capernaum, and at once on the Sabbath he went into the synagogue and beganto teach.21 And they entered into Capernaum. And entering into the synagogue promptly on the Sabbaths, he taught them.
And his teaching made a deep impression on them because, unlike the scribes, he taught them withauthority.22 And they were astonished over his doctrine. For he was teaching them as one who has authority, and not like the scribes.
And at once in their synagogue there was a man with an unclean spirit, and he shouted,23 And in their synagogue, there was a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,
'What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are:the Holy One of God.'24 saying: “What are we to you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God.”
But Jesus rebuked it saying, 'Be quiet! Come out of him!'25 And Jesus admonished him, saying, “Be silent, and depart from the man.”
And the unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions and with a loud cry went out of him.26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, departed from him.
The people were so astonished that they started asking one another what it al meant, saying, 'Here isa teaching that is new, and with authority behind it: he gives orders even to unclean spirits and they obey him.'27 And they were all so amazed that they inquired among themselves, saying: “What is this? And what is this new doctrine? For with authority he commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”
And his reputation at once spread everywhere, through all the surrounding Galilean countryside.28 And his fame went out quickly, throughout the entire region of Galilee.
And at once on leaving the synagogue, he went with James and John straight to the house of Simonand Andrew.29 And soon after departing from the synagogue, they went into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.
Now Simon's mother-in-law was in bed and feverish, and at once they told him about her.30 But the mother-in-law of Simon lay ill with a fever. And at once they told him about her.
He went in to her, took her by the hand and helped her up. And the fever left her and she began toserve them.31 And drawing near to her, he raised her up, taking her by the hand. And immediately the fever left her, and she ministered to them.
That evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were sick and those who were possessed bydevils.32 Then, when evening arrived, after the sun had set, they brought to him all who had maladies and those who had demons.
The whole town came crowding round the door,33 And the entire city was gathered together at the door.
and he cured many who were sick with diseases of one kind or another; he also drove out manydevils, but he would not allow them to speak, because they knew who he was.34 And he healed many who were troubled with various illnesses. And he cast out many demons, but he would not permit them to speak, because they knew him.
In the morning, long before dawn, he got up and left the house and went off to a lonely place andprayed there.35 And rising up very early, departing, he went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed.
Simon and his companions set out in search of him,36 And Simon, and those who were with him, followed after him.
and when they found him they said, 'Everybody is looking for you.'37 And when they had found him, they said to him, “For everyone is seeking you.”
He answered, 'Let us go elsewhere, to the neighbouring country towns, so that I can proclaim themessage there too, because that is why I came.'38 And he said to them: “Let us go into the neighboring towns and cities, so that I may preach there also. Indeed, it was for this reason that I came.”
And he went all through Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out devils.39 And he was preaching in their synagogues and throughout all of Galilee, and casting out demons.
A man suffering from a virulent skin-disease came to him and pleaded on his knees saying, 'If you arewil ing, you can cleanse me.'40 And a leper came to him, begging him. And kneeling down, he said to him, “If you are willing, you are able to cleanse me.”
Feeling sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him and said to him, 'I am willing. Becleansed.'41 Then Jesus, taking pity on him, reached out his hand. And touching him, he said to him: “I am willing. Be cleansed.”
And at once the skin-disease left him and he was cleansed.42 And after he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.
And at once Jesus sternly sent him away and said to him,43 And he admonished him, and he promptly sent him away.
'Mind you tel no one anything, but go and show yourself to the priest, and make the offering for yourcleansing prescribed by Moses as evidence to them.'44 And he said to him: “See to it that you tell no one. But go and show yourself to the high priest, and offer for your cleansing that which Moses instructed, as a testimony for them.”
The man went away, but then started freely proclaiming and tel ing the story everywhere, so thatJesus could no longer go openly into any town, but stayed outside in deserted places. Even so, people from alaround kept coming to him.45 But having departed, he began to preach and to disseminate the word, so that he was no longer able to openly enter a city, but had to remain outside, in deserted places. And they were gathered to him from every direction.
