NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.1 Initium evangelii Iesu Christi Filii Dei.
It is written in the prophet Isaiah: Look, I am going to send my messenger in front of you to prepare yourway before you.2 Sicut scriptum est in Isaia propheta:
“ Ecce mitto angelum meum ante faciem tuam,
qui praeparabit viam tuam;
A voice of one that cries in the desert: Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight.3 vox clamantis in deserto:
“Parate viam Domini, rectas facite semitas eius” ”,
John the Baptist was in the desert, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.4 fuit Ioannes Baptista in deserto praedicans baptismum paenitentiae inremissionem peccatorum.
All Judaea and all the people of Jerusalem made their way to him, and as they were baptised by him inthe river Jordan they confessed their sins.5 Et egrediebatur ad illum omnis Iudaeae regio etHierosolymitae universi et baptizabantur ab illo in Iordane flumine confitentespeccata sua.
John wore a garment of camel-skin, and he lived on locusts and wild honey.6 Et erat Ioannes vestitus pilis cameli, et zona pellicea circalumbos eius, et locustas et mel silvestre edebat.
In the course of his preaching he said, 'After me is coming someone who is more powerful than me, andI am not fit to kneel down and undo the strap of his sandals.7 Et praedicabat dicens: “ Venit fortior me post me, cuius non sum dignusprocumbens solvere corrigiam calceamentorum eius.
I have baptised you with water, but he wil baptise you with the Holy Spirit.'8 Ego baptizavi vos aqua; illevero baptizabit vos in Spiritu Sancto ”.
It was at this time that Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptised in the Jordan by John.9 Et factum est in diebus illis, venit Iesus a Nazareth Galilaeae et baptizatusest in Iordane ab Ioanne.
And at once, as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit, likea dove, descending on him.10 Et statim ascendens de aqua vidit apertos caelos etSpiritum tamquam columbam descendentem in ipsum;
And a voice came from heaven, 'You are my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on you.'11 et vox facta est de caelis:“ Tu es Filius meus dilectus; in te complacui ”.
And at once the Spirit drove him into the desert12 Et statim Spiritus expellit eum in desertum.
and he remained there for forty days, and was put to the test by Satan. He was with the wild animals,and the angels looked after him.13 Et erat in desertoquadraginta diebus et tentabatur a Satana; eratque cum bestiis, et angeliministrabant illi.
After John had been arrested, Jesus went into Galilee. There he proclaimed the gospel from Godsaying,14 Postquam autem traditus est Ioannes, venit Iesus in Galilaeam praedicansevangelium Dei
'The time is fulfil ed, and the kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the gospel.'15 et dicens: “ Impletum est tempus, et appropinquavit regnumDei; paenitemini et credite evangelio ”.
As he was walking along by the Lake of Galilee he saw Simon and Simon's brother Andrew casting anet in the lake -- for they were fishermen.16 Et praeteriens secus mare Galilaeae vidit Simonem et Andream fratrem Simonismittentes in mare; erant enim piscatores.
And Jesus said to them, 'Come after me and I will make you into fishers of people.'17 Et dixit eis Iesus: “ Venite postme, et faciam vos fieri piscatores hominum ”.
And at once they left their nets and fol owed him.18 Et protinus, relictisretibus, secuti sunt eum.
Going on a little further, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John; they too were in theirboat, mending the nets.19 Et progressus pusillum vidit Iacobum Zebedaei etIoannem fratrem eius, et ipsos in navi componentes retia,
At once he called them and, leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the men he employed, theywent after him.20 et statim vocavitillos. Et, relicto patre suo Zebedaeo in navi cum mercennariis, abierunt posteum.
They went as far as Capernaum, and at once on the Sabbath he went into the synagogue and beganto teach.21 Et ingrediuntur Capharnaum. Et statim sabbatis ingressus synagogam docebat.
And his teaching made a deep impression on them because, unlike the scribes, he taught them withauthority.22 Et stupebant super doctrina eius: erat enim docens eos quasi potestatemhabens et non sicut scribae.
And at once in their synagogue there was a man with an unclean spirit, and he shouted,23 Et statim erat in synagoga eorum homo in spirituimmundo; et exclamavit
'What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are:the Holy One of God.'24 dicens: “ Quid nobis et tibi, Iesu Nazarene? Venistiperdere nos? Scio qui sis: Sanctus Dei ”.
But Jesus rebuked it saying, 'Be quiet! Come out of him!'25 Et comminatus est ei Iesusdicens: “ Obmutesce et exi de homine! ”.
And the unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions and with a loud cry went out of him.26 Et discerpens eum spiritusimmundus et exclamans voce magna exivit ab eo.
The people were so astonished that they started asking one another what it al meant, saying, 'Here isa teaching that is new, and with authority behind it: he gives orders even to unclean spirits and they obey him.'27 Et mirati sunt omnes, ita utconquirerent inter se dicentes: “ Quidnam est hoc? Doctrina nova cumpotestate; et spiritibus immundis imperat, et oboediunt ei ”.
And his reputation at once spread everywhere, through all the surrounding Galilean countryside.28 Et processitrumor eius statim ubique in omnem regionem Galilaeae.
And at once on leaving the synagogue, he went with James and John straight to the house of Simonand Andrew.29 Et protinus egredientes de synagoga venerunt in domum Simonis et Andreae cumIacobo et Ioanne.
Now Simon's mother-in-law was in bed and feverish, and at once they told him about her.30 Socrus autem Simonis decumbebat febricitans; et statimdicunt ei de illa.
He went in to her, took her by the hand and helped her up. And the fever left her and she began toserve them.31 Et accedens elevavit eam apprehensa manu; et dimisit eamfebris, et ministrabat eis.
That evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were sick and those who were possessed bydevils.32 Vespere autem facto, cum occidisset sol, afferebant ad eum omnes malehabentes et daemonia habentes;
The whole town came crowding round the door,33 et erat omnis civitas congregata ad ianuam.
and he cured many who were sick with diseases of one kind or another; he also drove out manydevils, but he would not allow them to speak, because they knew who he was.34 Et curavit multos, qui vexabantur variis languoribus, et daemonia multa eiecitet non sinebat loqui daemonia, quoniam sciebant eum.
In the morning, long before dawn, he got up and left the house and went off to a lonely place andprayed there.35 Et diluculo valde mane surgens egressus est et abiit in desertum locum ibiqueorabat.
Simon and his companions set out in search of him,36 Et persecutus est eum Simon et qui cum illo erant;
and when they found him they said, 'Everybody is looking for you.'37 et cuminvenissent eum, dixerunt ei: “ Omnes quaerunt te! ”.
He answered, 'Let us go elsewhere, to the neighbouring country towns, so that I can proclaim themessage there too, because that is why I came.'38 Et ait illis: “Eamus alibi in proximos vicos, ut et ibi praedicem: ad hoc enim veni ”.
And he went all through Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out devils.39 Etvenit praedicans in synagogis eorum per omnem Galilaeam et daemonia eiciens.
A man suffering from a virulent skin-disease came to him and pleaded on his knees saying, 'If you arewil ing, you can cleanse me.'40 Et venit ad eum leprosus deprecans eum et genu flectens et dicens ei: “ Sivis, potes me mundare ”.
Feeling sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him and said to him, 'I am willing. Becleansed.'41 Et misertus extendens manum suam tetigit eum etait illi: “ Volo, mundare! ”;
And at once the skin-disease left him and he was cleansed.42 et statim discessit ab eo lepra, etmundatus est.
And at once Jesus sternly sent him away and said to him,43 Et infremuit in eum statimque eiecit illum
'Mind you tel no one anything, but go and show yourself to the priest, and make the offering for yourcleansing prescribed by Moses as evidence to them.'44 et dicit ei: “Vide,nemini quidquam dixeris; sed vade, ostende te sacerdoti et offer pro emundationetua, quae praecepit Moyses, in testimonium illis ”.
The man went away, but then started freely proclaiming and tel ing the story everywhere, so thatJesus could no longer go openly into any town, but stayed outside in deserted places. Even so, people from alaround kept coming to him.45 At ille egressus coepitpraedicare multum et diffamare sermonem, ita ut iam non posset manifesto incivitatem introire, sed foris in desertis locis erat; et conveniebant ad eumundique.
