NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
'Then the kingdom of Heaven wil be like this: Ten wedding attendants took their lamps and went tomeet the bridegroom.1 Tunc simile erit regnum cælorum decem virginibus : quæ accipientes lampades suas exierunt obviam sponso et sponsæ.
Five of them were foolish and five were sensible:2 Quinque autem ex eis erant fatuæ, et quinque prudentes :
the foolish ones, though they took their lamps, took no oil with them,3 sed quinque fatuæ, acceptis lampadibus, non sumpserunt oleum secum :
whereas the sensible ones took flasks of oil as wel as their lamps.4 prudentes vero acceperunt oleum in vasis suis cum lampadibus.
The bridegroom was late, and they al grew drowsy and fell asleep.5 Moram autem faciente sponso, dormitaverunt omnes et dormierunt.
But at midnight there was a cry, "Look! The bridegroom! Go out and meet him."6 Media autem nocte clamor factus est : Ecce sponsus venit, exite obviam ei.
Then al those wedding attendants woke up and trimmed their lamps,7 Tunc surrexerunt omnes virgines illæ, et ornaverunt lampades suas.
and the foolish ones said to the sensible ones, "Give us some of your oil: our lamps are going out."8 Fatuæ autem sapientibus dixerunt : Date nobis de oleo vestro, quia lampades nostræ extinguuntur.
But they replied, "There may not be enough for us and for you; you had better go to those who sel itand buy some for yourselves."9 Responderunt prudentes, dicentes : Ne forte non sufficiat nobis, et vobis, ite potius ad vendentes, et emite vobis.
They had gone off to buy it when the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went in with him tothe wedding hall and the door was closed.10 Dum autem irent emere, venit sponsus : et quæ paratæ erant, intraverunt cum eo ad nuptias, et clausa est janua.
The other attendants arrived later. "Lord, Lord," they said, "open the door for us."11 Novissime vero veniunt et reliquæ virgines, dicentes : Domine, domine, aperi nobis.
But he replied, "In truth I tel you, I do not know you."12 At ille respondens, ait : Amen dico vobis, nescio vos.
So stay awake, because you do not know either the day or the hour.13 Vigilate itaque, quia nescitis diem, neque horam.
'It is like a man about to go abroad who summoned his servants and entrusted his property to them.14 Sicut enim homo peregre proficiscens, vocavit servos suos, et tradidit illis bona sua.
To one he gave five talents, to another two, to a third one, each in proportion to his ability. Then heset out on his journey.15 Et uni dedit quinque talenta, alii autem duo, alii vero unum, unicuique secundum propriam virtutem : et profectus est statim.
The man who had received the five talents promptly went and traded with them and made five more.16 Abiit autem qui quinque talenta acceperat, et operatus est in eis, et lucratus est alia quinque.
The man who had received two made two more in the same way.17 Similiter et qui duo acceperat, lucratus est alia duo.
But the man who had received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master'smoney.18 Qui autem unum acceperat, abiens fodit in terram, et abscondit pecuniam domini sui.
Now a long time afterwards, the master of those servants came back and went through his accountswith them.19 Post multum vero temporis venit dominus servorum illorum, et posuit rationem cum eis.
The man who had received the five talents came forward bringing five more. "Sir," he said, "youentrusted me with five talents; here are five more that I have made."20 Et accedens qui quinque talenta acceperat, obtulit alia quinque talenta, dicens : Domine, quinque talenta tradidisti mihi, ecce alia quinque superlucratus sum.
His master said to him, "Well done, good and trustworthy servant; you have shown you aretrustworthy in small things; I wil trust you with greater; come and join in your master's happiness."21 Ait illi dominus ejus : Euge serve bone, et fidelis : quia super pauca fuisti fidelis, super multa te constituam ; intra in gaudium domini tui.
Next the man with the two talents came forward. "Sir," he said, "you entrusted me with two talents; here are two more that I have made."22 Accessit autem et qui duo talenta acceperat, et ait : Domine, duo talenta tradidisti mihi, ecce alia duo lucratus sum.
His master said to him, "Well done, good and trustworthy servant; you have shown you aretrustworthy in small things; I wil trust you with greater; come and join in your master's happiness."23 Ait illi dominus ejus : Euge serve bone, et fidelis : quia super pauca fuisti fidelis, super multa te constituam ; intra in gaudium domini tui.
Last came forward the man who had the single talent. "Sir," said he, "I had heard you were a hardman, reaping where you had not sown and gathering where you had not scattered;24 Accedens autem et qui unum talentum acceperat, ait : Domine, scio quia homo durus es ; metis ubi non seminasti, et congregas ubi non sparsisti :
so I was afraid, and I went off and hid your talent in the ground. Here it is; it was yours, you have itback."25 et timens abii, et abscondi talentum tuum in terra : ecce habes quod tuum est.
But his master answered him, "You wicked and lazy servant! So you knew that I reap where I havenot sown and gather where I have not scattered?26 Respondens autem dominus ejus, dixit ei : Serve male, et piger, sciebas quia meto ubi non semino, et congrego ubi non sparsi :
Well then, you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have gotmy money back with interest.27 oportuit ergo te committere pecuniam meam numulariis, et veniens ego recepissem utique quod meum est cum usura.
So now, take the talent from him and give it to the man who has the ten talents.28 Tollite itaque ab eo talentum, et date ei qui habet decem talenta :
For to everyone who has wil be given more, and he wil have more than enough; but anyone whohas not, wil be deprived even of what he has.29 omni enim habenti dabitur, et abundabit : ei autem qui non habet, et quod videtur habere, auferetur ab eo.
As for this good-for-nothing servant, throw him into the darkness outside, where there will be weepingand grinding of teeth."30 Et inutilem servum ejicite in tenebras exteriores : illic erit fletus, et stridor dentium.
'When the Son of man comes in his glory, escorted by al the angels, then he will take his seat on histhrone of glory.31 Cum autem venerit Filius hominis in majestate sua, et omnes angeli cum eo, tunc sedebit super sedem majestatis suæ :
Al nations wil be assembled before him and he wil separate people one from another as theshepherd separates sheep from goats.32 et congregabuntur ante eum omnes gentes, et separabit eos ab invicem, sicut pastor segregat oves ab hædis :
He will place the sheep on his right hand and the goats on his left.33 et statuet oves quidem a dextris suis, hædos autem a sinistris.
Then the King wil say to those on his right hand, "Come, you whom my Father has blessed, take asyour heritage the kingdom prepared for you since the foundation of the world.34 Tunc dicet rex his qui a dextris ejus erunt : Venite benedicti Patris mei, possidete paratum vobis regnum a constitutione mundi :
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger andyou made me welcome,35 esurivi enim, et dedistis mihi manducare : sitivi, et dedistis mihi bibere : hospes eram, et collegistis me :
lacking clothes and you clothed me, sick and you visited me, in prison and you came to see me."36 nudus, et cooperuistis me : infirmus, et visitastis me : in carcere eram, et venistis ad me.
Then the upright will say to him in reply, "Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirstyand give you drink?37 Tunc respondebunt ei justi, dicentes : Domine, quando te vidimus esurientem, et pavimus te : sitientem, et dedimus tibi potum ?
When did we see you a stranger and make you welcome, lacking clothes and clothe you?38 quando autem te vidimus hospitem, et collegimus te : aut nudum, et cooperuimus te ?
When did we find you sick or in prison and go to see you?"39 aut quando te vidimus infirmum, aut in carcere, et venimus ad te ?
And the King wil answer, "In truth I tel you, in so far as you did this to one of the least of thesebrothers of mine, you did it to me."40 Et respondens rex, dicet illis : Amen dico vobis, quamdiu fecistis uni ex his fratribus meis minimis, mihi fecistis.
Then he will say to those on his left hand, "Go away from me, with your curse upon you, to theeternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.41 Tunc dicet et his qui a sinistris erunt : Discedite a me maledicti in ignem æternum, qui paratus est diabolo, et angelis ejus :
For I was hungry and you never gave me food, I was thirsty and you never gave me anything to drink,42 esurivi enim, et non dedistis mihi manducare : sitivi, et non dedistis mihi potum :
I was a stranger and you never made me welcome, lacking clothes and you never clothed me, sickand in prison and you never visited me."43 hospes eram, et non collegistis me : nudus, et non cooperuistis me : infirmus, et in carcere, et non visitastis me.
Then it wil be their turn to ask, "Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty, a stranger or lackingclothes, sick or in prison, and did not come to your help?"44 Tunc respondebunt ei et ipsi, dicentes : Domine, quando te vidimus esurientem, aut sitientem, aut hospitem, aut nudum, aut infirmum, aut in carcere, et non ministravimus tibi ?
Then he will answer, "In truth I tel you, in so far as you neglected to do this to one of the least ofthese, you neglected to do it to me."45 Tunc respondebit illis, dicens : Amen dico vobis : Quamdiu non fecistis uni de minoribus his, nec mihi fecistis.
And they wil go away to eternal punishment, and the upright to eternal life.'46 Et ibunt hi in supplicium æternum : justi autem in vitam æternam.
