1 Yahweh spoke to Moses, in the desert of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting, on the first day of the secondmonth, in the second year after the exodus from Egypt, and said:	1 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen in deserto Sinai in tabernaculo fœderis, prima die mensis secundi, anno altero egressionis eorum ex Ægypto, dicens :
2 'Take a census of the whole community of Israelites by clans and families, taking a count of the namesof al the males, head by head.	2 Tollite summam universæ congregationis filiorum Israël per cognationes et domos suas, et nomina singulorum, quidquid sexus est masculini
3 You and Aaron wil register al those in Israel, twenty years of age and over, fit to bear arms, companyby company;	3 a vigesimo anno et supra, omnium virorum fortium ex Israël, et numerabitis eos per turmas suas, tu et Aaron.
4 you wil have one man from each tribe, the head of his family, to help you.	4 Eruntque vobiscum principes tribuum ac domorum in cognationibus suis,
5 'These are the names of those who must help you: For Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur.	5 quorum ista sunt nomina : de Ruben, Elisur, filius Sedeur ;

7 For Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab.	7 de Juda, Nahasson filius Aminadab ;
8 For Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar.	8 de Issachar, Nathanaël filius Suar ;
9 For Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon.	9 de Zabulon, Eliab filius Helon ;

16 These were men of repute in the community; they were the leaders of their ancestral tribes, the headsof Israel's thousands.	16 Hi nobilissimi principes multitudinis per tribus et cognationes suas, et capita exercitus Israël,

18 and on the first day of the second month they mustered the whole community. The Israelitesestablished their pedigrees by clans and families, and one by one the names of all men of twenty years and overwere recorded.	18 et congregaverunt primo die mensis secundi, recensentes eos per cognationes, et domos, ac familias, et capita, et nomina singulorum a vigesimo anno et supra,
19 As Yahweh had ordered, Moses registered them in the desert of Sinai.	19 sicut præceperat Dominus Moysi. Numeratique sunt in deserto Sinai.
20 Once the pedigrees of the descendants of Reuben, Israel's first-born, had been established by clansand families, the names of all the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.	20 De Ruben primogenito Israëlis per generationes et familias ac domos suas, et nomina capitum singulorum, omne quod sexus est masculini a vigesimo anno et supra, procedentium ad bellum,
21 The total of these for the tribe of Reuben was forty-six thousand five hundred.	21 quadraginta sex millia quingenti.
22 Once the pedigrees of Simeon's descendants had been established by clans and families, the namesof al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.	22 De filiis Simeon per generationes et familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt per nomina et capita singulorum, omne quod sexus est masculini a vigesimo anno et supra, procedentium ad bellum,
23 The total of these for the tribe of Simeon was fifty-nine thousand three hundred.	23 quinquaginta novem millia trecenti.
24 Once the pedigrees of Gad's descendants had been established by clans and families, the names ofal the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.	24 De filiis Gad per generationes et familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt per nomina singulorum a viginti annis et supra, omnes qui ad bella procederent,
25 The total of these for the tribe of Gad was forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty.	25 quadraginta quinque millia sexcenti quinquaginta.
26 Once the pedigrees of Judah's descendants had been established by clans and families, the namesof al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.	26 De filiis Juda per generationes et familias ac domos cognationum suarum, per nomina singulorum a vigesimo anno et supra, omnes qui poterant ad bella procedere,
27 The total of these for the tribe of Judah was seventy-four thousand six hundred.	27 recensiti sunt septuaginta quatuor millia sexcenti.
28 Once the pedigrees of Issachar's descendants had been established by clans and families, thenames of al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.	28 De filiis Issachar, per generationes et familias ac domos cognationum suarum, per nomina singulorum a vigesimo anno et supra, omnes qui ad bella procederent,

30 Once the pedigrees of Zebulun's descendants had been established by clans and families, the namesof al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.	30 De filiis Zabulon per generationes et familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt per nomina singulorum a vigesimo anno et supra, omnes qui poterant ad bella procedere,
31 The total of these for the tribe of Zebulun was fifty-seven thousand four hundred.	31 quinquaginta septem millia quadringenti.
32 As regards the descendants of Joseph: once the pedigrees of Ephraim's descendants had beenestablished by clans and families, the names of all the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, wererecorded one by one.	32 De filiis Joseph, filiorum Ephraim per generationes et familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt per nomina singulorum a vigesimo anno et supra, omnes qui poterant ad bella procedere,
33 The total of these for the tribe of Ephraim was forty thousand five hundred.	33 quadraginta millia quingenti.
34 Once the pedigrees of Manasseh's descendants had been established by clans and families, thenames of al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.	34 Porro filiorum Manasse per generationes et familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt per nomina singulorum a viginti annis et supra, omnes qui poterant ad bella procedere,
35 The total of these for the tribe of Manasseh was thirty-two thousand two hundred.	35 triginta duo millia ducenti.
36 Once the pedigrees of Benjamin's descendants had been established by clans and families, thenames of al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.	36 De filiis Benjamin per generationes et familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt nominibus singulorum a vigesimo anno et supra, omnes qui poterant ad bella procedere,
37 The total of these for the tribe of Benjamin was thirty-five thousand four hundred.	37 triginta quinque millia quadringenti.
38 Once the pedigrees of Dan's descendants had been established by clans and families, the names ofal the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.	38 De filiis Dan per generationes et familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt nominibus singulorum a vigesimo anno et supra, omnes qui poterant ad bella procedere,
39 The total of these for the tribe of Dan was sixty-two thousand seven hundred.	39 sexaginta duo millia septingenti.
40 Once the pedigrees of Asher's descendants had been established by clans and families, the namesof al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.	40 De filiis Aser per generationes et familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt per nomina singulorum a vigesimo anno et supra, omnes qui poterant ad bella procedere,
41 The total of these for the tribe of Asher was forty-one thousand five hundred.	41 quadraginta millia et mille quingenti.
42 Once the pedigrees of Naphtali's descendants had been established by clans and families, thenames of al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.	42 De filiis Nephthali per generationes et familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt nominibus singulorum a vigesimo anno et supra, omnes qui poterant ad bella procedere,
43 The total of these for the tribe of Naphtali was fifty-three thousand four hundred.	43 quinquaginta tria millia quadringenti.
44 Such were the men registered by Moses, Aaron and the leaders of Israel, of whom there were twelve,each representing his family.	44 Hi sunt, quos numeraverunt Moyses et Aaron, et duodecim principes Israël, singulos per domos cognationum suarum.
45 Al the Israelites of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were counted by families.	45 Fueruntque omnis numerus filiorum Israël per domos et familias suas a vigesimo anno et supra, qui poterant ad bella procedere,
46 Altogether, the total came to six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty.	46 sexcenta tria millia virorum quingenti quinquaginta.
47 But the Levites and their tribes were not included in the count.	47 Levitæ autem in tribu familiarum suarum non sunt numerati cum eis.
48 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:	48 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens :
49 'Do not, however, take a census of the Levites, or register them with the other Israelites,	49 Tribum Levi noli numerare, neque pones summam eorum cum filiis Israël :
50 but enrol the Levites to take charge of the Dwel ing where the Testimony is and of al its furnishingsand belongings. They must carry the Dwel ing and al its furnishings; they must look after the Dwel ing and pitchtheir camp round it.	50 sed constitue eos super tabernaculum testimonii et cuncta vasa ejus, et quidquid ad cæremonias pertinet. Ipsi portabunt tabernaculum et omnia utensilia ejus : et erunt in ministerio, ac per gyrum tabernaculi metabuntur.
51 Whenever the Dwelling is moved, the Levites will dismantle it; whenever the Dwel ing stops for thenight, the Levites wil erect it. Any unauthorised person coming near it will be put to death.	51 Cum proficiscendum fuerit, deponent Levitæ tabernaculum ; cum castrametandum, erigent. Quisquis externorum accesserit, occidetur.
52 The Israelites wil pitch their tents, each in their own encampment and by their own standard,company by company,	52 Metabuntur autem castra filii Israël unusquisque per turmas et cuneos atque exercitum suum.
53 but the Levites wil pitch their tents round the Dwel ing where the Testimony is. In this way Retributionwil be kept from fal ing on the whole community of Israelites, and the Levites wil keep charge of the Dwel ing ofthe Testimony.'	53 Porro Levitæ per gyrum tabernaculi figent tentoria, ne fiat indignatio super multitudinem filiorum Israël, et excubabunt in custodiis tabernaculi testimonii.
54 The Israelites did exactly as Yahweh had ordered Moses. They did as he said.	54 Fecerunt ergo filii Israël juxta omnia quæ præceperat Dominus Moysi.
