1 Yahweh spoke to Moses, in the desert of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting, on the first day of the secondmonth, in the second year after the exodus from Egypt, and said:	1 וידבר יהוה אל משה במדבר סיני באהל מועד באחד לחדש השני בשנה השנית לצאתם מארץ מצרים לאמר
2 'Take a census of the whole community of Israelites by clans and families, taking a count of the namesof al the males, head by head.	2 שאו את ראש כל עדת בני ישראל למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמות כל זכר לגלגלתם
3 You and Aaron wil register al those in Israel, twenty years of age and over, fit to bear arms, companyby company;	3 מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא בישראל תפקדו אתם לצבאתם אתה ואהרן
4 you wil have one man from each tribe, the head of his family, to help you.	4 ואתכם יהיו איש איש למטה איש ראש לבית אבתיו הוא
5 'These are the names of those who must help you: For Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur.	5 ואלה שמות האנשים אשר יעמדו אתכם לראובן אליצור בן שדיאור
6 For Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai.	6 לשמעון שלמיאל בן צורישדי
7 For Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab.	7 ליהודה נחשון בן עמינדב
8 For Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar.	8 ליששכר נתנאל בן צוער
9 For Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon.	9 לזבולן אליאב בן חלן
10 Of the sons of Joseph: for Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; for Manasseh, Gamaliel son ofPedahzur.	10 לבני יוסף לאפרים אלישמע בן עמיהוד למנשה גמליאל בן פדהצור
11 For Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni.	11 לבנימן אבידן בן גדעני
12 For Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.	12 לדן אחיעזר בן עמישדי
13 For Asher, Pagiel son of Ochran.	13 לאשר פגעיאל בן עכרן
14 For Gad, Eliasaph son of Reuel.	14 לגד אליסף בן דעואל
15 For Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan.'	15 לנפתלי אחירע בן עינן
16 These were men of repute in the community; they were the leaders of their ancestral tribes, the headsof Israel's thousands.	16 אלה קריאי העדה נשיאי מטות אבותם ראשי אלפי ישראל הם
17 Moses and Aaron took these men who had been named	17 ויקח משה ואהרן את האנשים האלה אשר נקבו בשמות
18 and on the first day of the second month they mustered the whole community. The Israelitesestablished their pedigrees by clans and families, and one by one the names of all men of twenty years and overwere recorded.	18 ואת כל העדה הקהילו באחד לחדש השני ויתילדו על משפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמות מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה לגלגלתם
19 As Yahweh had ordered, Moses registered them in the desert of Sinai.	19 כאשר צוה יהוה את משה ויפקדם במדבר סיני
20 Once the pedigrees of the descendants of Reuben, Israel's first-born, had been established by clansand families, the names of all the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.	20 ויהיו בני ראובן בכר ישראל תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמות לגלגלתם כל זכר מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא
21 The total of these for the tribe of Reuben was forty-six thousand five hundred.	21 פקדיהם למטה ראובן ששה וארבעים אלף וחמש מאות
22 Once the pedigrees of Simeon's descendants had been established by clans and families, the namesof al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.	22 לבני שמעון תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם פקדיו במספר שמות לגלגלתם כל זכר מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא
23 The total of these for the tribe of Simeon was fifty-nine thousand three hundred.	23 פקדיהם למטה שמעון תשעה וחמשים אלף ושלש מאות
24 Once the pedigrees of Gad's descendants had been established by clans and families, the names ofal the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.	24 לבני גד תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמות מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא
25 The total of these for the tribe of Gad was forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty.	25 פקדיהם למטה גד חמשה וארבעים אלף ושש מאות וחמשים
26 Once the pedigrees of Judah's descendants had been established by clans and families, the namesof al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.	26 לבני יהודה תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמת מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא
27 The total of these for the tribe of Judah was seventy-four thousand six hundred.	27 פקדיהם למטה יהודה ארבעה ושבעים אלף ושש מאות
28 Once the pedigrees of Issachar's descendants had been established by clans and families, thenames of al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.	28 לבני יששכר תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמת מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא
29 The total of these for the tribe of Issachar was fifty-four thousand four hundred.	29 פקדיהם למטה יששכר ארבעה וחמשים אלף וארבע מאות

32 As regards the descendants of Joseph: once the pedigrees of Ephraim's descendants had beenestablished by clans and families, the names of all the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, wererecorded one by one.	32 לבני יוסף לבני אפרים תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמת מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא
33 The total of these for the tribe of Ephraim was forty thousand five hundred.	33 פקדיהם למטה אפרים ארבעים אלף וחמש מאות
34 Once the pedigrees of Manasseh's descendants had been established by clans and families, thenames of al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.	34 לבני מנשה תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמות מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא
35 The total of these for the tribe of Manasseh was thirty-two thousand two hundred.	35 פקדיהם למטה מנשה שנים ושלשים אלף ומאתים

38 Once the pedigrees of Dan's descendants had been established by clans and families, the names ofal the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.	38 לבני דן תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמת מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא
39 The total of these for the tribe of Dan was sixty-two thousand seven hundred.	39 פקדיהם למטה דן שנים וששים אלף ושבע מאות
40 Once the pedigrees of Asher's descendants had been established by clans and families, the namesof al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.	40 לבני אשר תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמת מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא
41 The total of these for the tribe of Asher was forty-one thousand five hundred.	41 פקדיהם למטה אשר אחד וארבעים אלף וחמש מאות
42 Once the pedigrees of Naphtali's descendants had been established by clans and families, thenames of al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.	42 בני נפתלי תולדתם למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמת מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא
43 The total of these for the tribe of Naphtali was fifty-three thousand four hundred.	43 פקדיהם למטה נפתלי שלשה וחמשים אלף וארבע מאות
44 Such were the men registered by Moses, Aaron and the leaders of Israel, of whom there were twelve,each representing his family.	44 אלה הפקדים אשר פקד משה ואהרן ונשיאי ישראל שנים עשר איש איש אחד לבית אבתיו היו
45 Al the Israelites of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were counted by families.	45 ויהיו כל פקודי בני ישראל לבית אבתם מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא בישראל
46 Altogether, the total came to six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty.	46 ויהיו כל הפקדים שש מאות אלף ושלשת אלפים וחמש מאות וחמשים
47 But the Levites and their tribes were not included in the count.	47 והלוים למטה אבתם לא התפקדו בתוכם
48 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:	48 וידבר יהוה אל משה לאמר
49 'Do not, however, take a census of the Levites, or register them with the other Israelites,	49 אך את מטה לוי לא תפקד ואת ראשם לא תשא בתוך בני ישראל
50 but enrol the Levites to take charge of the Dwel ing where the Testimony is and of al its furnishingsand belongings. They must carry the Dwel ing and al its furnishings; they must look after the Dwel ing and pitchtheir camp round it.	50 ואתה הפקד את הלוים על משכן העדת ועל כל כליו ועל כל אשר לו המה ישאו את המשכן ואת כל כליו והם ישרתהו וסביב למשכן יחנו
51 Whenever the Dwelling is moved, the Levites will dismantle it; whenever the Dwel ing stops for thenight, the Levites wil erect it. Any unauthorised person coming near it will be put to death.	51 ובנסע המשכן יורידו אתו הלוים ובחנת המשכן יקימו אתו הלוים והזר הקרב יומת
52 The Israelites wil pitch their tents, each in their own encampment and by their own standard,company by company,	52 וחנו בני ישראל איש על מחנהו ואיש על דגלו לצבאתם
53 but the Levites wil pitch their tents round the Dwel ing where the Testimony is. In this way Retributionwil be kept from fal ing on the whole community of Israelites, and the Levites wil keep charge of the Dwel ing ofthe Testimony.'	53 והלוים יחנו סביב למשכן העדת ולא יהיה קצף על עדת בני ישראל ושמרו הלוים את משמרת משכן העדות
54 The Israelites did exactly as Yahweh had ordered Moses. They did as he said.	54 ויעשו בני ישראל ככל אשר צוה יהוה את משה כן עשו
