NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 Snow no more befits the summer, nor rain the harvest-time, than honours befit a fool.	1 Come la neve all'estate e la pioggia al tempo della messe, così l'onore non s'addice allo stolto.
2 As the sparrow escapes, and the swal ow flies away, so the undeserved curse will never hit its mark.	2 Come uccello che passa volando, come passerotto che va qua e là, così la maledizione non meritata non ha effetto.
3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and for the backs of fools, a stick.	3 La frusta pel cavallo, la cavezza per l'asino, il bastone sul dorso degli stolti.
4 Do not answer a fool in the terms of his fol y for fear you grow like him yourself.	4 Non rispondere allo stolto secondo la sua stoltezza, chè tu non abbia a diventar simile a lui.
5 Answer a fool in the terms of his fol y for fear he imagine himself wise.	5 Rispondi allo stolto secondo la sua stoltezza, perchè non si tenga saggio.
6 He wounds himself, he takes violence for his drink, who sends a message by a fool.	6 Si tronca le gambe e beve iniquità chi affida messaggi ad uno stolto.
7 Unreliable as the legs of the lame, so is a proverb in the mouth of fools.	7 Come lo zoppo ha invano belle gambe, così le gravi sentenze non stan bene in bocca dello stolto.
8 As wel tie the stone to the sling as pay honour to a fool.	8 Come chi getta la pietra nel mucchio di Mercurio, così fa chi onora lo stollo.
9 A thorn branch in a drunkard's hand, such is a proverb in the mouth of fools.	9 Come spina capitata nella mano d'un briaco, così una massima nella bocca dello stolto.
10 An archer wounding everyone, such is he who hires the passing fool and drunkard.	10 La sentenza del giudice finisce le liti, e chi impone silenzio allo stolto calma gli sdegni.
11 As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool reverts to his fol y.	11 Come cane che torna al suo vomito, così è lo stolto che ricade nella sua stoltezza.
12 You see someone who thinks himself wise? More to be hoped for from a fool than from him!	12 Hai tu veduto un uomo che si crede sapiente? Più di lui può sperare uno stolto.
13 'A wild beast on the road!' says the idler, 'a lion in the streets!'	13 Dice il pigro: « C'è un leone nella via, c'è una leonessa nel cammino ».
14 The door turns on its hinges, the idler on his bed.	14 Come la porta gira sui gangheri, così il pigro nel suo letto.
15 Into the dish the idler dips his hand, but is too tired to bring it back to his mouth.	15 Il pigro nasconde la mano sotto l'ascella, gli par gran fatica portarla alla bocca.
16 The idler thinks himself wiser than seven people who answer with discretion.	16 Il pigro si crede più sapiente di sette uomini che pronunziano sentenze.
17 He takes a stray dog by the ears, who meddles in someone else's quarrel.	17 E' come chi piglia un cane per le orecchie colui che, passando, s'irrita e s'immischia nella lite d'un altro.
18 Like a madman hurling firebrands, arrows and death,	18 Come è reo chi scaglia saette e dardi mortali,
19 so is anyone who lies to a companion and then says, 'Aren't I amusing?'	19 così è colui che danneggia con frode l'amico, e, scoperto, dice: « L'ho fatto per scherzo ».
20 No wood, and the fire goes out; no slanderer, and quarrel ing dies down.	20 Al mancar della legna si spegne il fuoco, tolto via il sussurrone, cessan le contese.
21 Charcoal for live embers, wood for fire, and the quarrelsome for kindling strife.	21 Come i carboni dàn la brace e le legna il fuoco, così l'iracondo accende le risse.
22 The words of a slanderer are tasty morsels that go right down into the bel y.	22 Le parole del sussurrone sembran semplici, ma penetrano nell'intimo delle viscere.
23 Base silver-plate on top of clay: such are fervent lips and a wicked heart.	23 Come scoria d'argento a vernice di vaso di terra cotta, così le labbra gonfie unite a cuore malvagio.
24 Whoever hates may hide it in speech, but deep within lies treachery;	24 Il nemico si riconosce al suo parlare, quando nel cuore cova tradimenti.
25 do not trust such a person's pretty speeches, since in the heart lurk seven abominations.	25 Quando parla con voce sommessa, non te ne fidare, perchè porta nel cuore sette malizie.
26 Hatred may disguise itself with guile, to reveal its wickedness later in the assembly.	26 Egli con finzione nasconde il suo odio, ma la sua malizia sarà rivelata nell'assemblea.
27 Whoever digs a pit fal s into it, the stone comes back on him that rol s it.	27 Chi scava la fossa vi cadrà, e la pietra cadrà addosso a chi la rotola.
28 The lying tongue hates its victims, the wheedling mouth causes ruin.	28 La lingua ingannatrice non ama la verità, la bocca che adula è causa di rovine.
