NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Snow no more befits the summer, nor rain the harvest-time, than honours befit a fool.	1 Come la neve all'estate e come la pioggia alla messe, così lo stolto è indegno della gloria.
2 As the sparrow escapes, and the swal ow flies away, so the undeserved curse will never hit its mark.	2 Come il passero svolazza, come la rondine vola via, così la maledizione senza motivo non ha effetto.
3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and for the backs of fools, a stick.	3 Briglia al cavallo, freno all'asino e bastone per il dorso degli stolti.
4 Do not answer a fool in the terms of his fol y for fear you grow like him yourself.	4 Non risponder allo stolto secondo la sua stoltezza, altrimenti rassomigli a lui pure tu.
5 Answer a fool in the terms of his fol y for fear he imagine himself wise.	5 Rispondi allo stolto per la sua stoltezza, perché non si creda di esser saggio.
6 He wounds himself, he takes violence for his drink, who sends a message by a fool.	6 Si mutila i piedi, beve la violenza chi invia un messaggio per mezzo di uno stolto.
7 Unreliable as the legs of the lame, so is a proverb in the mouth of fools.	7 Vacillano le ginocchia dello sciancato e il proverbio sulla bocca degli stolti.
8 As wel tie the stone to the sling as pay honour to a fool.	8 Come uno che mette una pietra nella fionda, così è chi dà gloria allo stolto.
9 A thorn branch in a drunkard's hand, such is a proverb in the mouth of fools.	9 Una spina cresce nella mano dell'ubriacone: il proverbio nella bocca degli stolti.
10 An archer wounding everyone, such is he who hires the passing fool and drunkard.	10 Un arciere che ferisce ogni passante è colui che ingaggia uno stolto.
11 As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool reverts to his fol y.	11 Come un cane ritorna al suo vomito, lo stolto ripete la sua stoltezza.
12 You see someone who thinks himself wise? More to be hoped for from a fool than from him!	12 Vedi uno che si crede di esser saggio? C'è da sperar più dallo stolto che da lui.
13 'A wild beast on the road!' says the idler, 'a lion in the streets!'	13 Dice il pigro: "C'è una fiera nella strada, un leone è nelle vie!".
14 The door turns on its hinges, the idler on his bed.	14 La porta gira sul suo cardine e il pigro sul suo letto.
15 Into the dish the idler dips his hand, but is too tired to bring it back to his mouth.	15 Allunga il pigro la sua mano al piatto, ma fa fatica a portarla alla sua bocca.
16 The idler thinks himself wiser than seven people who answer with discretion.	16 Il pigro si reputa più saggio di sette che rispondono con senno.
17 He takes a stray dog by the ears, who meddles in someone else's quarrel.	17 Come chi prende per la coda il can che passa è chi si impiccia di una lite altrui.
18 Like a madman hurling firebrands, arrows and death,	18 Come colui che per fare il pazzo tira giavellotti, frecce e morte,
19 so is anyone who lies to a companion and then says, 'Aren't I amusing?'	19 così è colui che mente al suo prossimo e dice: "Non mi posso divertire?".
20 No wood, and the fire goes out; no slanderer, and quarrel ing dies down.	20 Finisce la legna, il fuoco si spegne; non c'è denigratore, la collera si placa.
21 Charcoal for live embers, wood for fire, and the quarrelsome for kindling strife.	21 Carbone sulle braci e legna sopra il fuoco: è l'uomo rissoso che attizza sempre liti.
22 The words of a slanderer are tasty morsels that go right down into the bel y.	22 Le parole del denigratore son cibi deliziosi che scendono fino al fondo delle viscere.
23 Base silver-plate on top of clay: such are fervent lips and a wicked heart.	23 Argento con scorie spalmato sulla creta: labbra ardenti e cuore malvagio.
24 Whoever hates may hide it in speech, but deep within lies treachery;	24 Chi odia si maschera con le sue labbra, ma cova nel suo intimo l'inganno.
25 do not trust such a person's pretty speeches, since in the heart lurk seven abominations.	25 Se aggrazia la sua voce non gli credere: perché ci son sette obbrobri nel suo cuore.
26 Hatred may disguise itself with guile, to reveal its wickedness later in the assembly.	26 Può nascondersi l'odio con la dissimulazione: ma la sua malizia si svelerà nell'assemblea.
27 Whoever digs a pit fal s into it, the stone comes back on him that rol s it.	27 Chi scava una fossa ci cade e una pietra ricade su chi la rotola.
28 The lying tongue hates its victims, the wheedling mouth causes ruin.	28 Una lingua bugiarda odia chi ferisce e una bocca sdolcinata produce la rovina.
