NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 Snow no more befits the summer, nor rain the harvest-time, than honours befit a fool.	1 - Come all'estate la neve, come alla mèsse la pioggia, così allo stolto la gloria non sta bene.
2 As the sparrow escapes, and the swal ow flies away, so the undeserved curse will never hit its mark.	2 Come uccello che passa via, come passero che se ne va, così la maledizione scagliata senza motivo, sorvolerà su chiunque fu detta.
3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and for the backs of fools, a stick.	3 La sferza al cavallo, la cavezza all'asino, e al dosso degli stolti, il bastone.
4 Do not answer a fool in the terms of his fol y for fear you grow like him yourself.	4 Non risponder allo stolto secondo la sua stoltezza, affinchè non diventi par suo anche tu.
5 Answer a fool in the terms of his fol y for fear he imagine himself wise.	5 Rispondi allo stolto secondo la sua stoltezza, affinchè non si creda saggio ai suoi occhi.
6 He wounds himself, he takes violence for his drink, who sends a message by a fool.	6 Resta a piè zoppo e col male in corpochi manda commissioni per mezzo d'uno stolto.
7 Unreliable as the legs of the lame, so is a proverb in the mouth of fools.	7 Come a uno zoppo non serve aver belli gli stinchi, così non serve il proverbio in bocca agli stolti.
8 As wel tie the stone to the sling as pay honour to a fool.	8 Come chi getta sassi alle macerie, così chi dà lode allo stolto.
9 A thorn branch in a drunkard's hand, such is a proverb in the mouth of fools.	9 Come uno spino se in mano a un ubriaco spuntasse, così il proverbio in bocca agli stolti.
10 An archer wounding everyone, such is he who hires the passing fool and drunkard.	10 La sentenza tronca le litie chi impone il silenzio allo stolto acqueta gli sdegni.
11 As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool reverts to his fol y.	11 Come il cane che ritorna al vomito, così lo stolto che ricasca nella sua stoltezza.
12 You see someone who thinks himself wise? More to be hoped for from a fool than from him!	12 Hai visto un uomo sapiente ai suoi propri occhi? c'è da aspettarsi più da uno stolto che da costui.
13 'A wild beast on the road!' says the idler, 'a lion in the streets!'	13 Dice il pigro: «Di fuori c'è il leone, c'è la pantera per istrada».
14 The door turns on its hinges, the idler on his bed.	14 Come la porta si gira sui propri cardinicosì il pigro nel proprio letto.
15 Into the dish the idler dips his hand, but is too tired to bring it back to his mouth.	15 Il pigro mette la mano sotto l'ascella, e a stento la ritira per portarsela alla bocca.
16 The idler thinks himself wiser than seven people who answer with discretion.	16 Ai suoi occhi lo stolto è più sapientedi sette uomini che dànno responsi assennati.
17 He takes a stray dog by the ears, who meddles in someone else's quarrel.	17 Come chi afferra un cane per gli orecchi, così il passante impronto che s'immischia nelle questioni altrui.
18 Like a madman hurling firebrands, arrows and death,	18 Come è colpevole chi lancia dardi e giavellotti micidiali,
19 so is anyone who lies to a companion and then says, 'Aren't I amusing?'	19 così chi dolosamente nuoce all'amico, e preso in fallo dice: «Lo feci per celia».
20 No wood, and the fire goes out; no slanderer, and quarrel ing dies down.	20 Col finir delle legna il fuoco si spegne, e levato di mezzo il detrattore, si sopiscono le contese.
21 Charcoal for live embers, wood for fire, and the quarrelsome for kindling strife.	21 Il carbone per la brace, la legna pel fuoco e l'accattabrighe per attizzar le risse.
22 The words of a slanderer are tasty morsels that go right down into the bel y.	22 Le parole del maldicente paiono cose delle più lievi, ma s'insinuano sino al fondo delle viscere.
23 Base silver-plate on top of clay: such are fervent lips and a wicked heart.	23 Come chi vuole inverniciare un vaso di terracotta con argentone, così chi unisce labbra riboccanti d'affetto a tristo cuore.
24 Whoever hates may hide it in speech, but deep within lies treachery;	24 Dal suo parlare si conosce il nemico, quando in cuor suo ha progettato l'inganno.
25 do not trust such a person's pretty speeches, since in the heart lurk seven abominations.	25 Quando fa la voce sommessa non credergli, poichè sette scelleratezze sono nel suo cuore.
26 Hatred may disguise itself with guile, to reveal its wickedness later in the assembly.	26 Chi nasconde dolosamente il suo odio, vedrà la sua malizia svelata nell'assemblea.
27 Whoever digs a pit fal s into it, the stone comes back on him that rol s it.	27 Chi scava la fossa ci casca dentro, e la pietra ritorna su chi l'ha rotata.
28 The lying tongue hates its victims, the wheedling mouth causes ruin.	28 La lingua bugiarda non ama la schiettezza e la bocca adulatrice prepara i precipizi.
