NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA CEI 2008
1 Snow no more befits the summer, nor rain the harvest-time, than honours befit a fool.	1 Come neve d’estate e pioggia alla mietitura, così l’onore non conviene allo stolto.
2 As the sparrow escapes, and the swal ow flies away, so the undeserved curse will never hit its mark.	2 Come passero che svolazza, come rondine che volteggia, così una maledizione immotivata non ha effetto.
3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and for the backs of fools, a stick.	3 La frusta per il cavallo, la cavezza per l’asino e il bastone per la schiena degli stolti.
4 Do not answer a fool in the terms of his fol y for fear you grow like him yourself.	4 Non rispondere allo stolto secondo la sua stoltezza, per non divenire anche tu simile a lui.
5 Answer a fool in the terms of his fol y for fear he imagine himself wise.	5 Rispondi allo stolto secondo la sua stoltezza, perché egli non si creda saggio.
6 He wounds himself, he takes violence for his drink, who sends a message by a fool.	6 Si taglia i piedi e beve amarezze chi invia messaggi per mezzo di uno stolto.
7 Unreliable as the legs of the lame, so is a proverb in the mouth of fools.	7 Come pendono le gambe da uno zoppo, così una massima sulla bocca dello stolto.
8 As wel tie the stone to the sling as pay honour to a fool.	8 Come chi lega una pietra alla fionda, così chi attribuisce onori a uno stolto.
9 A thorn branch in a drunkard's hand, such is a proverb in the mouth of fools.	9 Come ramo spinoso in mano a un ubriaco, così una massima sulla bocca dello stolto.
10 An archer wounding everyone, such is he who hires the passing fool and drunkard.	10 È come un arciere che colpisce a caso chi paga lo stolto o stipendia il primo che passa.
11 As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool reverts to his fol y.	11 Come il cane torna al suo vomito, così lo stolto ripete le sue stoltezze.
12 You see someone who thinks himself wise? More to be hoped for from a fool than from him!	12 Hai visto un uomo che è saggio ai suoi occhi? C’è più da sperare da uno stolto che da lui.
13 'A wild beast on the road!' says the idler, 'a lion in the streets!'	13 Il pigro dice: «C’è una belva per la strada, un leone si aggira per le piazze».
14 The door turns on its hinges, the idler on his bed.	14 La porta gira sui cardini, così il pigro sul suo letto.
15 Into the dish the idler dips his hand, but is too tired to bring it back to his mouth.	15 Il pigro immerge la mano nel piatto, ma dura fatica a riportarla alla bocca.
16 The idler thinks himself wiser than seven people who answer with discretion.	16 Il pigro si crede più saggio di sette persone che rispondono con senno.
17 He takes a stray dog by the ears, who meddles in someone else's quarrel.	17 È simile a chi prende un cane per le orecchie un passante che si intromette nella lite di un altro.
18 Like a madman hurling firebrands, arrows and death,	18 Come un pazzo che scaglia tizzoni e frecce di morte,
19 so is anyone who lies to a companion and then says, 'Aren't I amusing?'	19 così è colui che inganna il suo prossimo e poi dice: «Ma sì, è stato uno scherzo!».
20 No wood, and the fire goes out; no slanderer, and quarrel ing dies down.	20 Per mancanza di legna il fuoco si spegne; se non c’è il calunniatore, il litigio si calma.
21 Charcoal for live embers, wood for fire, and the quarrelsome for kindling strife.	21 Mantice per il carbone e legna per il fuoco, tale è l’attaccabrighe per attizzare le liti.
22 The words of a slanderer are tasty morsels that go right down into the bel y.	22 Le parole del calunniatore sono come ghiotti bocconi, che scendono fin nell’intimo.
23 Base silver-plate on top of clay: such are fervent lips and a wicked heart.	23 Come patina d’argento su un coccio di creta sono le labbra lusinghiere con un cuore maligno.
24 Whoever hates may hide it in speech, but deep within lies treachery;	24 Chi odia si maschera con le labbra, ma nel suo intimo cova inganni;
25 do not trust such a person's pretty speeches, since in the heart lurk seven abominations.	25 anche se usa espressioni melliflue, non credergli, perché nel cuore egli ha sette obbrobri.
26 Hatred may disguise itself with guile, to reveal its wickedness later in the assembly.	26 Chi odia si nasconde con astuzia, ma la sua malizia apparirà pubblicamente.
27 Whoever digs a pit fal s into it, the stone comes back on him that rol s it.	27 Chi scava una fossa vi cadrà dentro e chi rotola una pietra, gli ricadrà addosso.
28 The lying tongue hates its victims, the wheedling mouth causes ruin.	28 Una lingua bugiarda fa molti danni, una bocca adulatrice produce rovina.
