Nehemiah 7

NEW JERUSALEM	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 Now, when the wal had been rebuilt and I had hung the doors, the gatekeepers (the singers and theLevites) were then appointed.	1 Now after the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and numbered the porters and singing men, and Levites:
2 I entrusted the administration of Jerusalem to my brother Hanani, and to Hananiah the commander ofthe citadel, for he was a more trustworthy, God-fearing man than many others.	2 I commanded Hanani my brother, and Hananias ruler of the house of Jerusalem, (for he seemed as a sincere man, and one that feared God above the rest,)
3 I said to them, 'The gates of Jerusalem must not be opened until the sun gets hot; and the doors mustbe shut and barred before it begins to go down. Detail guards from the residents of Jerusalem, each to his post,in front of his own house.'	3 And I said to them: Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened till the sun be hot. And while they were yet standing by, the gates were shut, and barred: and I set watchmen of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one by their courses, and every mall over against his house.
4 The city was large and spacious but the population was smal , and the houses had not been rebuilt.	4 And the city was very wide and great, and the people few in the midst thereof, and the houses were not built.
5 My God then inspired me to assemble the nobles, the officials and the people for the purpose of takinga census by families. I discovered the genealogical register of those who had returned in the first group, andthere I found entered:	5 But God had put in my heart, and I assembled the princes and magistrates, and common people, to number them: and I found a book of the number of them who came up at first, and therein it was found written:
6 These are the people of the province who returned from the captivity of the Exile, those whomNebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had deported, and who returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his owntown.	6 These are the children of the province, who came up from the captivity of them that had been carried away, whom Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon had carried away, and who returned into Judea, every one into his own city.
7 They were the ones who arrived with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani,Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah. The number of the men of the people of Israel:	7 Who came with Zorobabel, Josue, Nehemias, Azarias, Raamias, Nahamani, Mardochai, Belsam, Mespharath, Begoia, Nahum, Baana. The number of the men of the people of Israel:
8 sons of Parosh, two thousand one hundred and seventy-two;	8 The children of Pharos, two thousand one hundred seventy-two.
9 sons of Shephatiah, three hundred and seventy-two;	9 The children of Sephatia, three hundred seventy-two.
10 sons of Arah, six hundred and fifty-two;	10 The children of Area, six hundred fifty-two.
11 sons of Pahath-Moab, that is to say sons of Jeshua and Joab, two thousand eight hundred andeighteen;	11 The children of Phahath Moab of the children of Josue and Joab, two thousand eight hundred eighteen.

59 sons of Shephatiah, sons of Hattil, sons of Pochereth-ha-Zebaim, sons of Amon.	59 The children of Saphatia, the children of Hatil, the children of Phochereth, who was born of Sabaim, the son of Amon.
60 The total of the temple slaves and the sons of Solomon's slaves: three hundred and ninety-two.	60 All the Nathinites, and the children of the servants of Solomon, three hundred ninety-two.
61 The fol owing, who came from Tel-Melah, Tel-Harsha, Cherub, Addon and Immer, could not prove thattheir families and ancestry were of Israelite origin:	61 And these are they that came up from Telmela, Thelharsa, Cherub, Addon, and Emmer: and could not shew the house of their fathers, nor their seed, whether they were of Israel.
62 the sons of Delaiah, the sons of Tobiah, the sons of Nekoda: six hundred and forty-two.	62 The children of Dalaia, the children of Tobia, the children of Necoda, six hundred forty-two.
63 And among the priests: the sons of Hobaiah, the sons of Hakkoz, the sons of Barzil ai -- who hadmarried one of the daughters of Barzil ai the Gileadite, whose name he adopted.	63 And of the priests, the children of Habia, the children of Accos, the children of Berzellai, who took a wife of the daughters of Berzellai the Galaadite, and he was called by their name.
64 These had looked for their entries in the official genealogies but were not to be found there, and werehence disqualified from the priesthood.	64 These sought their writing in the record, and found it not: and they were cast out of the priesthood.
65 Consequently, His Excel ency forbade them to eat any of the consecrated food until a priest appearedwho could consult urim and thummim.	65 And Athersatha said to them, that they should not eat of the holies of holies, until there stood up a priest learned and skilful.
66 The whole assembly numbered forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty people,	66 All the multitude as it were one man, forty-two thousand three hundred sixty,
67 not counting their slaves and maidservants to the number of seven thousand three hundred and thirty-seven. They also had two hundred and forty-five male and female singers.	67 Beside their menservants and womenservants, who were seven thousand three hundred thirty-seven: and among them singing men, and singing women, two hundred forty-five.
68 They had four hundred and thirty-five camels and six thousand seven hundred and twenty donkeys.	68 Their horses, seven hundred thirtysix: their mules two hundred forty-five:
69 A certain number of heads of families contributed to the work. His Excel ency contributed onethousand gold drachmas, fifty bowls, and thirty priestly robes to the fund.	69 Their camels, four hundred thirtyfive, their asses, six thousand seven hundred and twenty.
70 And heads of families gave twenty thousand gold drachmas and two thousand two hundred silverminas to the work fund.	70 And some of the heads of the families gave unto the work. Athersatha gave into the treasure a thousand drama of gold, fifty bowls, and five hundred and thirty garments for priests.
71 The gifts made by the rest of the people amounted to twenty thousand gold drachmas, two thousandsilver minas, and sixty-seven priestly robes.	71 And some of the heads of families gave to the treasure of the work, twenty thousand drama of gold, and two thousand two hundred pounds of silver.
72 The priests, the Levites and some of the people lived in Jerusalem and thereabouts; the singers, thegatekeepers, and the temple slaves in their appropriate towns; and al the other Israelites, in their own towns.Now when the seventh month came round -- the Israelites being in their towns-	72 And that which the rest of the people gave, was twenty thousand drama of gold, and two thousand pounds of silver, and sixty-seven garments for priests.
	73 And the priests, and the Levites, and the porters, and the singing men, and the rest of the common people, and the Nathinites, and all Israel dwelt in their cities.
