1 Now, when the wal had been rebuilt and I had hung the doors, the gatekeepers (the singers and theLevites) were then appointed.	1 ויהי כאשר נבנתה החומה ואעמיד הדלתות ויפקדו השוערים והמשררים והלוים
2 I entrusted the administration of Jerusalem to my brother Hanani, and to Hananiah the commander ofthe citadel, for he was a more trustworthy, God-fearing man than many others.	2 ואצוה את חנני אחי ואת חנניה שר הבירה על ירושלם כי הוא כאיש אמת וירא את האלהים מרבים
3 I said to them, 'The gates of Jerusalem must not be opened until the sun gets hot; and the doors mustbe shut and barred before it begins to go down. Detail guards from the residents of Jerusalem, each to his post,in front of his own house.'	3 ויאמר להם לא יפתחו שערי ירושלם עד חם השמש ועד הם עמדים יגיפו הדלתות ואחזו והעמיד משמרות ישבי ירושלם איש במשמרו ואיש נגד ביתו
4 The city was large and spacious but the population was smal , and the houses had not been rebuilt.	4 והעיר רחבת ידים וגדולה והעם מעט בתוכה ואין בתים בנוים
5 My God then inspired me to assemble the nobles, the officials and the people for the purpose of takinga census by families. I discovered the genealogical register of those who had returned in the first group, andthere I found entered:	5 ויתן אלהי אל לבי ואקבצה את החרים ואת הסגנים ואת העם להתיחש ואמצא ספר היחש העולים בראשונה ואמצא כתוב בו
6 These are the people of the province who returned from the captivity of the Exile, those whomNebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had deported, and who returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his owntown.	6 אלה בני המדינה העלים משבי הגולה אשר הגלה נבוכדנצר מלך בבל וישובו לירושלם וליהודה איש לעירו
7 They were the ones who arrived with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani,Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah. The number of the men of the people of Israel:	7 הבאים עם זרבבל ישוע נחמיה עזריה רעמיה נחמני מרדכי בלשן מספרת בגוי נחום בענה מספר אנשי עם ישראל
8 sons of Parosh, two thousand one hundred and seventy-two;	8 בני פרעש אלפים מאה ושבעים ושנים
9 sons of Shephatiah, three hundred and seventy-two;	9 בני שפטיה שלש מאות שבעים ושנים
10 sons of Arah, six hundred and fifty-two;	10 בני ארח שש מאות חמשים ושנים
11 sons of Pahath-Moab, that is to say sons of Jeshua and Joab, two thousand eight hundred andeighteen;	11 בני פחת מואב לבני ישוע ויואב אלפים ושמנה מאות שמנה עשר
12 sons of Elam, one thousand two hundred and fifty-four;	12 בני עילם אלף מאתים חמשים וארבעה
13 sons of Zattu, eight hundred and forty-five;	13 בני זתוא שמנה מאות ארבעים וחמשה
14 sons of Zaccai, seven hundred and sixty;	14 בני זכי שבע מאות וששים
15 sons of Binnui, six hundred and forty-eight;	15 בני בנוי שש מאות ארבעים ושמנה
16 sons of Bebai, six hundred and twenty-eight;	16 בני בבי שש מאות עשרים ושמנה
17 sons of Azgad, two thousand three hundred and twenty-two;	17 בני עזגד אלפים שלש מאות עשרים ושנים

19 sons of Bigvai, two thousand and sixty-seven;	19 בני בגוי אלפים ששים ושבעה

58 sons of Jaala, sons of Darkon, sons of Giddel,	58 בני יעלא בני דרקון בני גדל
59 sons of Shephatiah, sons of Hattil, sons of Pochereth-ha-Zebaim, sons of Amon.	59 בני שפטיה בני חטיל בני פכרת הצביים בני אמון
60 The total of the temple slaves and the sons of Solomon's slaves: three hundred and ninety-two.	60 כל הנתינים ובני עבדי שלמה שלש מאות תשעים ושנים
61 The fol owing, who came from Tel-Melah, Tel-Harsha, Cherub, Addon and Immer, could not prove thattheir families and ancestry were of Israelite origin:	61 ואלה העולים מתל מלח תל חרשא כרוב אדון ואמר ולא יכלו להגיד בית אבותם וזרעם אם מישראל הם
62 the sons of Delaiah, the sons of Tobiah, the sons of Nekoda: six hundred and forty-two.	62 בני דליה בני טוביה בני נקודא שש מאות וארבעים ושנים
63 And among the priests: the sons of Hobaiah, the sons of Hakkoz, the sons of Barzil ai -- who hadmarried one of the daughters of Barzil ai the Gileadite, whose name he adopted.	63 ומן הכהנים בני חביה בני הקוץ בני ברזלי אשר לקח מבנות ברזלי הגלעדי אשה ויקרא על שמם
64 These had looked for their entries in the official genealogies but were not to be found there, and werehence disqualified from the priesthood.	64 אלה בקשו כתבם המתיחשים ולא נמצא ויגאלו מן הכהנה
65 Consequently, His Excel ency forbade them to eat any of the consecrated food until a priest appearedwho could consult urim and thummim.	65 ויאמר התרשתא להם אשר לא יאכלו מקדש הקדשים עד עמד הכהן לאורים ותומים
66 The whole assembly numbered forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty people,	66 כל הקהל כאחד ארבע רבוא אלפים שלש מאות וששים
67 not counting their slaves and maidservants to the number of seven thousand three hundred and thirty-seven. They also had two hundred and forty-five male and female singers.	67 מלבד עבדיהם ואמהתיהם אלה שבעת אלפים שלש מאות שלשים ושבעה ולהם משררים ומשררות מאתים וארבעים וחמשה
68 They had four hundred and thirty-five camels and six thousand seven hundred and twenty donkeys.	68 סוסיהם שבע מאות שלשים וששה פרדיהם מאתים ארבעים וחמשה
69 A certain number of heads of families contributed to the work. His Excel ency contributed onethousand gold drachmas, fifty bowls, and thirty priestly robes to the fund.	69 גמלים ארבע מאות שלשים וחמשה חמרים ששת אלפים שבע מאות ועשרים
70 And heads of families gave twenty thousand gold drachmas and two thousand two hundred silverminas to the work fund.	70 ומקצת ראשי האבות נתנו למלאכה התרשתא נתן לאוצר זהב דרכמנים אלף מזרקות חמשים כתנות כהנים שלשים וחמש מאות
71 The gifts made by the rest of the people amounted to twenty thousand gold drachmas, two thousandsilver minas, and sixty-seven priestly robes.	71 ומראשי האבות נתנו לאוצר המלאכה זהב דרכמונים שתי רבות וכסף מנים אלפים ומאתים
72 The priests, the Levites and some of the people lived in Jerusalem and thereabouts; the singers, thegatekeepers, and the temple slaves in their appropriate towns; and al the other Israelites, in their own towns.Now when the seventh month came round -- the Israelites being in their towns-	72 ואשר נתנו שארית העם זהב דרכמונים שתי רבוא וכסף מנים אלפים וכתנת כהנים ששים ושבעה
