1 Now, when the wal had been rebuilt and I had hung the doors, the gatekeepers (the singers and theLevites) were then appointed.	1 Postquam autem ædificatus est murus, et posui valvas, et recensui janitores, et cantores, et Levitas,
2 I entrusted the administration of Jerusalem to my brother Hanani, and to Hananiah the commander ofthe citadel, for he was a more trustworthy, God-fearing man than many others.	2 præcepi Hanani fratri meo, et Hananiæ principi domus de Jerusalem (ipse enim quasi vir verax et timens Deum plus ceteris videbatur),
3 I said to them, 'The gates of Jerusalem must not be opened until the sun gets hot; and the doors mustbe shut and barred before it begins to go down. Detail guards from the residents of Jerusalem, each to his post,in front of his own house.'	3 et dixi eis : Non aperiantur portæ Jerusalem usque ad calorem solis. Cumque adhuc assisterent, clausæ portæ sunt, et oppilatæ : et posui custodes de habitatoribus Jerusalem, singulos per vices suas, et unumquemque contra domum suam.
4 The city was large and spacious but the population was smal , and the houses had not been rebuilt.	4 Civitas autem erat lata nimis et grandis, et populus parvus in medio ejus, et non erant domus ædificatæ.
5 My God then inspired me to assemble the nobles, the officials and the people for the purpose of takinga census by families. I discovered the genealogical register of those who had returned in the first group, andthere I found entered:	5 Deus autem dedit in corde meo, et congregavi optimates, et magistratus, et vulgus, ut recenserem eos : et inveni librum census eorum qui ascenderant primum, et inventum est scriptum in eo.
6 These are the people of the province who returned from the captivity of the Exile, those whomNebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had deported, and who returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his owntown.	6 Isti filii provinciæ, qui ascenderunt de captivitate migrantium, quos transtulerat Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis, et reversi sunt in Jerusalem et in Judæam, unusquisque in civitatem suam.
7 They were the ones who arrived with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani,Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah. The number of the men of the people of Israel:	7 Qui venerunt cum Zorobabel, Josue, Nehemias, Azarias, Raamias, Nahamani, Mardochæus, Belsam, Mespharath, Begoai, Nahum, Baana. 63 And among the priests: the sons of Hobaiah, the sons of Hakkoz, the sons of Barzil ai -- who hadmarried one of the daughters of Barzil ai the Gileadite, whose name he adopted.	63 Et de sacerdotibus, filii Habia, filii Accos, filii Berzellai, qui accepit de filiabus Berzellai Galaaditis uxorem, et vocatus est nomine eorum.
64 These had looked for their entries in the official genealogies but were not to be found there, and werehence disqualified from the priesthood.	64 Hi quæsierunt scripturam suam in censu, et non invenerunt : et ejecti sunt de sacerdotio.
65 Consequently, His Excel ency forbade them to eat any of the consecrated food until a priest appearedwho could consult urim and thummim.	65 Dixitque Athersatha eis ut non manducarent de Sanctis sanctorum, donec staret sacerdos doctus et eruditus.
66 The whole assembly numbered forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty people,	66 Omnis multitudo quasi vir unus quadraginta duo millia trecenti sexaginta,
67 not counting their slaves and maidservants to the number of seven thousand three hundred and thirty-seven. They also had two hundred and forty-five male and female singers.	67 absque servis et ancillis eorum, qui erant septem millia trecenti triginta septem, et inter eos cantores et cantatrices, ducenti quadraginta quinque.
68 They had four hundred and thirty-five camels and six thousand seven hundred and twenty donkeys.	68 Equi eorum, septingenti triginta sex : muli eorum, ducenti quadraginta quinque :
69 A certain number of heads of families contributed to the work. His Excel ency contributed onethousand gold drachmas, fifty bowls, and thirty priestly robes to the fund.	69 cameli eorum, quadringenti triginta quinque : asini, sex millia septingenti viginti.
70 And heads of families gave twenty thousand gold drachmas and two thousand two hundred silverminas to the work fund.	70 Nonnulli autem de principibus familiarum dederunt in opus. Athersatha dedit in thesaurum auri drachmas mille, phialas quinquaginta, tunicas sacerdotales quingentas triginta.
71 The gifts made by the rest of the people amounted to twenty thousand gold drachmas, two thousandsilver minas, and sixty-seven priestly robes.	71 Et de principibus familiarum dederunt in thesaurum operis, auri drachmas viginti millia, et argenti mnas duo millia ducentas.
72 The priests, the Levites and some of the people lived in Jerusalem and thereabouts; the singers, thegatekeepers, and the temple slaves in their appropriate towns; and al the other Israelites, in their own towns.Now when the seventh month came round -- the Israelites being in their towns-	72 Et quod dedit reliquus populus, auri drachmas viginti millia, et argenti mnas duo millia, et tunicas sacerdotales sexaginta septem.
	73 Habitaverunt autem sacerdotes, et Levitæ, et janitores, et cantores, et reliquum vulgus, et Nathinæi, et omnis Israël, in civitatibus suis.
