NEW AMERICAN BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
Hallelujah! Give thanks to the LORD, who is good, whose love endures forever.1 Al eluia! Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, his faithful love is everlasting!
Who can tell the mighty deeds of the LORD, proclaim in full God's praise?2 Who can recount al Yahweh's triumphs, who can ful y voice his praise?
Happy those who do what is right, whose deeds are always just.3 How blessed are those who keep to what is just, whose conduct is always upright!
Remember me, LORD, as you favor your people; come to me with your saving help,4 Remember me, Yahweh, in your love for your people. Come near to me with your saving power,
That I may see the prosperity of your chosen, rejoice in the joy of your people, and glory with your heritage.5 let me share the happiness of your chosen ones, let me share the joy of your people, the pride ofyour heritage.
We have sinned like our ancestors; we have done wrong and are guilty.6 Like our ancestors, we have sinned, we have acted wickedly, guiltily;
Our ancestors in Egypt did not attend to your wonders. They did not remember your great love; they defied the Most High at the Red Sea.7 our ancestors in Egypt never grasped the meaning of your wonders. They did not bear in mind yourcountless acts of love, at the Sea of Reeds they defied the Most High;
Yet he saved them for his name's sake to make his power known.8 but for the sake of his name he saved them, to make known his mighty power.
He roared at the Red Sea and it dried up. He led them through the deep as through a desert.9 At his rebuke the Sea of Reeds dried up, he let them pass through the deep as though it were desert,
He rescued them from hostile hands, freed them from the power of the enemy.10 so he saved them from their opponents' clutches, rescued them from the clutches of their enemies.
The waters covered their oppressors; not one of them survived.11 The waters enveloped their enemies, not one of whom was left.
Then they believed his words and sang songs of praise.12 Then they believed what he had said, and sang his praises.
But they soon forgot all he had done; they had no patience for his plan.13 But they soon forgot his achievements, they did not even wait for his plans;
In the desert they gave way to their cravings, tempted God in the wasteland.14 they were overwhelmed with greed in the wastelands, in the solitary wastes they challenged God.
So he gave them what they asked and sent among them a wasting disease.15 He gave them al they asked for, but struck them with a deep wasting sickness;
In the camp they challenged Moses and Aaron, the holy one of the LORD.16 in the camp they grew jealous of Moses, and of Aaron, Yahweh's holy one.
The earth opened and swallowed Dathan, it closed on the followers of Abiram.17 The earth opened and swal owed up Dathan, closed in on Abiram's faction;
Against that company the fire blazed; flames consumed the wicked.18 fire flamed out against their faction, the renegades were engulfed in flames.
At Horeb they fashioned a calf, worshiped a metal statue.19 At Horeb they made a calf, bowed low before cast metal;
They exchanged their glorious God for the image of a grass-eating bull.20 they exchanged their glory for the image of a grass-eating bull.
They forgot the God who saved them, who did great deeds in Egypt,21 They forgot the God who was saving them, who had done great deeds in Egypt,
Amazing deeds in the land of Ham, fearsome deeds at the Red Sea.22 such wonders in the land of Ham, such awesome deeds at the Sea of Reeds.
He would have decreed their destruction, had not Moses, the chosen leader, Withstood him in the breach to turn back his destroying anger.23 He thought of putting an end to them, had not Moses, his chosen one, taken a stand in the breachand confronted him, to turn his anger away from destroying them.
Next they despised the beautiful land; they did not believe the promise.24 They counted a desirable land for nothing, they put no trust in his promise;
In their tents they complained; they did not obey the LORD.25 they stayed in their tents and grumbled, they would not listen to Yahweh's voice.
So with raised hand he swore to destroy them in the desert,26 So he lifted his hand against them, to strike them down in the desert,
To scatter their descendants among the nations, disperse them in foreign lands.27 to strike down their descendants among the nations, to scatter them al over the world.
They joined in the rites of Baal of Peor, ate food sacrificed to dead gods.28 They committed themselves to serve Baal-Peor, and ate sacrifices made to lifeless gods.
They provoked him by their actions, and a plague broke out among them.29 They so provoked him by their actions that a plague broke out among them.
Then Phinehas rose to intervene, and the plague was brought to a halt.30 Then up stood Phinehas to intervene, and the plague was checked;
This was counted for him as a righteous deed for all generations to come.31 for this he is the example of uprightness, from age to age for ever.
At the waters of Meribah they angered God, and Moses suffered because of them.32 At the waters of Meribah they so angered Yahweh, that Moses suffered on their account,
They so embittered his spirit that rash words crossed his lips.33 for they had embittered his spirit, and he spoke without due thought.
They did not destroy the peoples as the LORD had commanded them,34 They did not destroy the nations, as Yahweh had told them to do,
But mingled with the nations and imitated their ways.35 but intermarried with them, and adopted their ways.
They worshiped their idols and were ensnared by them.36 They worshipped those nations' false gods, til they found themselves entrapped,
They sacrificed to the gods their own sons and daughters,37 and sacrificed their own sons and their daughters to demons.
Shedding innocent blood, the blood of their own sons and daughters, Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, desecrating the land with bloodshed.38 Innocent blood they shed, the blood of their sons and daughters; offering them to the idols ofCanaan, they pol uted the country with blood.
They defiled themselves by their actions, became adulterers by their conduct.39 They defiled themselves by such actions, their behaviour was that of a harlot.
So the LORD grew angry with his people, abhorred his own heritage.40 Yahweh's anger blazed out at his people, his own heritage fil ed him with disgust.
He handed them over to the nations, and their adversaries ruled them.41 He handed them over to the nations, and their opponents became their masters;
Their enemies oppressed them, kept them under subjection.42 their enemies lorded it over them, crushing them under their rule.
Many times did he rescue them, but they kept rebelling and scheming and were brought low by their own guilt.43 Time and again he rescued them, but they stil defied him deliberately, and sank ever deeper in theirguilt;
Still God had regard for their affliction when he heard their wailing.44 even so he took pity on their distress, as soon as he heard them cry out.
For their sake he remembered his covenant and relented in his abundant love,45 Bearing his covenant with them in mind, he relented in his boundless and faithful love;
Winning for them compassion from all who held them captive.46 he ensured that they received compassion, in their treatment by al their captors.
Save us, LORD, our God; gather us from among the nations That we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in praising you.47 Save us, Yahweh our God, gather us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to your holyname, and may glory in praising you.
Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting! Let all the people say, Amen! Hallelujah!48 Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel, from all eternity and for ever! Let all the people say, 'Amen'.
