NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
Hallelujah! Give thanks to the LORD, who is good, whose love endures forever.1 Alleluia. Give glory to the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
Who can tell the mighty deeds of the LORD, proclaim in full God's praise?2 Who shall declare the powers of the Lord? who shall set forth all his praises?
Happy those who do what is right, whose deeds are always just.3 Blessed are they that keep judgment, and do justice at all times.
Remember me, LORD, as you favor your people; come to me with your saving help,4 Remember us, O Lord, in the favour of thy people: visit us with thy salvation.
That I may see the prosperity of your chosen, rejoice in the joy of your people, and glory with your heritage.5 That we may see the good of thy chosen, that we may rejoice in the joy of thy nation: that thou mayst be praised with thy inheritance.
We have sinned like our ancestors; we have done wrong and are guilty.6 We have sinned with our fathers: we have acted unjustly, we have wrought iniquity.
Our ancestors in Egypt did not attend to your wonders. They did not remember your great love; they defied the Most High at the Red Sea.7 Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt: they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies: And they provoked to wrath going up to the sea, even the Red Sea.
Yet he saved them for his name's sake to make his power known.8 And he saved them for his own name's sake: that he might make his power known.
He roared at the Red Sea and it dried up. He led them through the deep as through a desert.9 And he rebuked the Red Sea, and it was dried up: and he led them through the depths, as in a wilderness.
He rescued them from hostile hands, freed them from the power of the enemy.10 And he saved them from the hand of them that hated them: and he redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.
The waters covered their oppressors; not one of them survived.11 And the water covered them that afflicted them: there was not one of them left.
Then they believed his words and sang songs of praise.12 And they believed his words: and they sang his praises.
But they soon forgot all he had done; they had no patience for his plan.13 They had quickly done, they forgot his works: and they waited not for his counsels.
In the desert they gave way to their cravings, tempted God in the wasteland.14 And they coveted their desire in the desert: and they tempted God in the place without water.
So he gave them what they asked and sent among them a wasting disease.15 And he gave them their request: and sent fulness into their souls.
In the camp they challenged Moses and Aaron, the holy one of the LORD.16 And they provoked Moses in the camp, Aaron the holy one of the Lord.
The earth opened and swallowed Dathan, it closed on the followers of Abiram.17 The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan: and covered the congregation of Abiron.
Against that company the fire blazed; flames consumed the wicked.18 And a fire was kindled in their congregation: the flame burned the wicked.
At Horeb they fashioned a calf, worshiped a metal statue.19 They made also a calf in Horeb: and they adored the graven thing.
They exchanged their glorious God for the image of a grass-eating bull.20 And they changed their glory into the likeness of a calf that eateth grass.
They forgot the God who saved them, who did great deeds in Egypt,21 They forgot God, who saved them, who had done great things in Egypt,
Amazing deeds in the land of Ham, fearsome deeds at the Red Sea.22 wondrous works in the land of Cham: terrible things in the Red Sea.
He would have decreed their destruction, had not Moses, the chosen leader, Withstood him in the breach to turn back his destroying anger.23 And he said that he would destroy them: had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach: To turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them.
Next they despised the beautiful land; they did not believe the promise.24 And they set at nought the desirable land. They believed not his word,
In their tents they complained; they did not obey the LORD.25 and they murmured in their tents: they hearkened not to the voice of the Lord.
So with raised hand he swore to destroy them in the desert,26 And he lifted up his hand over them: to overthrow them in the desert;
To scatter their descendants among the nations, disperse them in foreign lands.27 And to cast down their seed among the nations, and to scatter them in the countries.
They joined in the rites of Baal of Peor, ate food sacrificed to dead gods.28 They also were initiated to Beelphegor: and ate the sacrifices of the dead.
They provoked him by their actions, and a plague broke out among them.29 And they provoked him with their inventions: and destruction was multiplied among them.
Then Phinehas rose to intervene, and the plague was brought to a halt.30 Then Phinees stood up, and pacified him: and the slaughter ceased.
This was counted for him as a righteous deed for all generations to come.31 And it was reputed to him unto justice, to generation and generation for evermore.
At the waters of Meribah they angered God, and Moses suffered because of them.32 They provoked him also at the waters of contradiction: and Moses was afflicted for their sakes:
They so embittered his spirit that rash words crossed his lips.33 because they exasperated his spirit. And he distinguished with his lips.
They did not destroy the peoples as the LORD had commanded them,34 They did not destroy the nations of which the Lord spoke unto them.
But mingled with the nations and imitated their ways.35 And they were mingled among the heathens, and learned their works:
They worshiped their idols and were ensnared by them.36 and served their idols, and it became a stumblingblock to them.
They sacrificed to the gods their own sons and daughters,37 And they sacrificed their sons, and their daughters to devils.
Shedding innocent blood, the blood of their own sons and daughters, Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, desecrating the land with bloodshed.38 And they shed innocent blood: the blood of their sons and of their daughters which they sacrificed to the idols of Chanaan. And the land was polluted with blood,
They defiled themselves by their actions, became adulterers by their conduct.39 and was defiled with their works: and they went aside after their own inventions.
So the LORD grew angry with his people, abhorred his own heritage.40 And the Lord was exceedingly angry with his people: and he abhorred his inheritance.
He handed them over to the nations, and their adversaries ruled them.41 And he delivered them into the hands of the nations: and they that hated them had dominion over them.
Their enemies oppressed them, kept them under subjection.42 And their enemies afflicted them: and they were humbled under their hands:
Many times did he rescue them, but they kept rebelling and scheming and were brought low by their own guilt.43 many times did he deliver them. But they provoked him with their counsel: and they were brought low by their iniquities.
Still God had regard for their affliction when he heard their wailing.44 And he saw when they were in tribulation: and he heard their prayer.
For their sake he remembered his covenant and relented in his abundant love,45 And he was mindful of his covenant: and repented according to the multitude of his mercies.
Winning for them compassion from all who held them captive.46 And he gave them unto mercies, in the sight of all those that had made them captives.
Save us, LORD, our God; gather us from among the nations That we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in praising you.47 Save us, O Lord, our God: and gather us from among nations: That we may give thanks to thy holy name, and may glory in thy praise.
Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting! Let all the people say, Amen! Hallelujah!48 Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting: and let all the people say: So be it, so be it.
