1 Then the LORD addressed Job out of the storm and said:	1 Alors le Seigneur parla à Job du milieu d'un tourbillon, et lui dit :
2 Who is this that obscures divine plans with words of ignorance?	2 Quel est celui qui obscurcit les pensées par des discours inconsidérés (mêle des sentences à des discours maladroits) ?
3 Gird up your loins now, like a man; I will question you, and you tell me the answers!	3 Ceins tes reins comme un homme (de cœur) ; je t'interrogerai, et tu me répondras.
4 Where were you when I founded the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.	4 Où étais-tu quand je jetais les fondements de la terre ? Dis-le-moi, si tu as de l'intelligence.
5 Who determined its size; do you know? Who stretched out the measuring line for it?	5 Sais-tu qui en a réglé les mesures, ou qui a tendu sur elle le cordeau ?
6 Into what were its pedestals sunk, and who laid the cornerstone,	6 Sur quoi ses bases sont-elles affermies ? ou qui a posé sa pierre angulaire,
7 While the morning stars sang in chorus and all the sons of God shouted for joy?	7 tandis que les astres du matin me louaient ensemble, et que les fils de Dieu poussaient des cris de joie ?
8 And who shut within doors the sea, when it burst forth from the womb;	8 Qui a (r)enfermé la mer avec des portes (digues), lorsqu'elle s'élançait comme (sortant) du (d'un) sein maternel,
9 When I made the clouds its garment and thick darkness its swaddling bands?	9 lorsque je lui donnais les nuées pour vêtement, et que je l'enveloppais d'obscurité comme de langes d'enfant ?
10 When I set limits for it and fastened the bar of its door,	10 Je l'ai resserrée dans mes limites ; je lui ai mis des barrières et des portes (un verrou et une porte à deux battants) ;
11 And said: Thus far shall you come but no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stilled!	11 et j'ai dit : Tu viendras jusqu'ici, et tu ne passeras pas plus loin, et tu briseras là l'orgueil de tes flots.
12 Have you ever in your lifetime commanded the morning and shown the dawn its place	12 Est-ce toi qui, depuis ta naissance, as donné des ordres à l'étoile du matin, et qui as montré sa place à l'aurore ?
13 For taking hold of the ends of the earth, till the wicked are shaken from its surface?	13 As-tu saisi les extrémités de la terre, la secouant pour en rejeter (chasser) les impies ?
14 The earth is changed as is clay by the seal, and dyed as though it were a garment;	14 Elle se transforme alors comme l'argile sous le cachet, et elle se montre comme couverte d'un (demeurera comme un) vêtement.
15 But from the wicked the light is withheld, and the arm of pride is shattered.	15 La lumière des impies leur sera enlevée ; et leur bras, qui se lève, sera brisé.
16 Have you entered into the sources of the sea, or walked about in the depths of the abyss?	16 Es-tu entré jusqu'au fond de la mer, et t'es-tu promené aux extrémités de l'abîme ?
17 Have the gates of death been shown to you, or have you seen the gates of darkness?	17 Les portes de la mort t'ont-elles été ouvertes ? et as-tu vu ces (les) portes ténébreuses ?
18 Have you comprehended the breadth of the earth? Tell me, if you know all:	18 As-tu considéré l'étendue de la terre ? Indique-moi toutes ces choses si tu les connais.
19 Which is the way to the dwelling place of light, and where is the abode of darkness,	19 Sur quelle route habite la lumière, et quelle est la demeure des ténèbres,
20 That you may take them to their boundaries and set them on their homeward paths?	20 afin que tu les conduises toutes deux à leurs limites, et que tu connaisses les sentiers de leur séjour.
21 You know, because you were born before them, and the number of your years is great!	21 Savais-tu, alors, que tu devais naître, et connaissais-tu le nombre de tes jours ?
22 Have you entered the storehouse of the snow, and seen the treasury of the hail	22 Es-tu entré dans les trésors de la neige, ou as-tu contemplé (aperçu) les trésors de la grêle,
23 Which I have reserved for times of stress, for the days of war and of battle?	23 que j'ai préparés pour le temps de l'ennemi, pour le jour de la guerre et du combat ?
24 Which way to the parting of the winds, whence the east wind spreads over the earth?	24 Par quelle voie la lumière se divise-t-elle, et la chaleur se répand-elle sur la terre ?
25 Who has laid out a channel for the downpour and for the thunderstorm a path	25 Qui a ouvert une route aux pluies impétueuses, et un passage au tonnerre éclatant,
26 To bring rain to no man's land, the unpeopled wilderness;	26 pour faire pleuvoir dans une terre sans habitants, dans un désert où aucun mortel ne demeure ;
27 To enrich the waste and desolate ground till the desert blooms with verdure?	27 pour inonder les lieux solitaires (inaccessibles) et isolés, et pour y faire germer l'herbe verte ?
28 Has the rain a father; or who has begotten the drops of dew?	28 Qui est le père de la pluie, et qui a engendré les gouttes de rosée ?
29 Out of whose womb comes the ice, and who gives the hoarfrost its birth in the skies,	29 Du sein de qui la glace est-elle sortie ? et qui a engendré la gelée du ciel ?
30 When the waters lie covered as though with stone that holds captive the surface of the deep?	30 Les eaux se durcissent comme la pierre, et la surface de l'abîme devient solide.
31 Have you fitted a curb to the Pleiades, or loosened the bonds of Orion?	31 Pourras-tu joindre ensemble les brillantes étoiles des Pléiades, et détourner l'Ours (Arcturus) de son cours ?
32 Can you bring forth the Mazzaroth in their season, or guide the Bear with its train?	32 Est-ce toi qui fais paraître en son temps l'étoile du matin (Lucifer), et qui fais lever l'étoile du soir sur les habitants (fils) de la terre ?
33 Do you know the ordinances of the heavens; can you put into effect their plan on the earth?	33 Connais-tu l'ordre du ciel, et règles-tu son influence (en rendras-tu raison) sur la terre ?
34 Can you raise your voice among the clouds, or veil yourself in the waters of the storm?	34 Elèveras-tu ta voix jusqu'aux nuées, et des torrents d'eaux te (re)couvriront-ils ?
35 Can you send forth the lightnings on their way, or will they say to you, "Here we are"?	35 Lances-tu des tonnerres (foudres), et partent-ils à l'instant ; et, revenant ensuite, te disent-ils : Nous voici ?
36 Who puts wisdom in the heart, and gives the cock its understanding?	36 Qui a mis la sagesse dans le cœur de l'homme, ou qui a donné au coq l'intelligence ?
37 Who counts the clouds in his wisdom? Or who tilts the water jars of heaven	37 Qui exposera l'arrangement (la conduite) des cieux, et qui fera taire leur harmonie (cesser el concert du ciel) ?
38 So that the dust of earth is fused into a mass and its clods made solid?	38 Quand la poussière se répand(ait)-elle sur la terre, et quand les mottes (glèbes) se colleront-elles (durcissaient-elles) ensemble ?
39 Do you hunt the prey for the lioness or appease the hunger of her cubs,	39 Prendras-tu la proie pour la lionne, et rassasieras-tu la faim (empliras-tu l'âme, note) de ses petits,
40 While they crouch in their dens, or lie in wait in the thicket?	40 lorsqu'ils sont couchés dans leurs antres, et qu'ils sont en embuscade dans leurs cavernes ?
41 Who provides nourishment for the ravens when their young ones cry out to God, and they rove abroad without food?	41 Qui prépare au corbeau sa nourriture, lorsque ses petits courent çà et là et crient vers Dieu, parce qu'ils n'ont rien à manger ?
