1 Then the LORD addressed Job out of the storm and said:	1 Allora Jahvè parlò a Giobbe dal seno della tempesta:
2 Who is this that obscures divine plans with words of ignorance?	2 «Chi è costui che oscura il consiglio con parole prive di sapienza?
3 Gird up your loins now, like a man; I will question you, and you tell me the answers!	3 Cingiti i fianchi come un prode: io domanderò e tu mi istruirai.
4 Where were you when I founded the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.	4 Dov’eri tu quando io mettevo le basi alla terra? Dimmelo, se hai tanta scienza.
5 Who determined its size; do you know? Who stretched out the measuring line for it?	5 Chi ne fissò le misure, se lo sai, o chi distese il regolo sopra di essa?
6 Into what were its pedestals sunk, and who laid the cornerstone,	6 Su che cosa furono poggiate le sue basi o chi pose la sua pietra angolare,
7 While the morning stars sang in chorus and all the sons of God shouted for joy?	7 mentre gioivano gli astri del mattino e giubilavano tutti i figli di Dio?
8 And who shut within doors the sea, when it burst forth from the womb;	8 Chi rinchiuse con due porte il mare, quando eruppe nascendo dal seno materno?
9 When I made the clouds its garment and thick darkness its swaddling bands?	9 Quando io feci delle nubi le sue vesti e della caligine le sue fasce,
10 When I set limits for it and fastened the bar of its door,	10 quando gli fissai i confini e gli posi sbarra e due porte
11 And said: Thus far shall you come but no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stilled!	11 e gli dissi: “Fin qui verrai e non oltre, qui si infrangerà l’orgoglio dei tuoi flutti”.
12 Have you ever in your lifetime commanded the morning and shown the dawn its place	12 Da quando tu vivi hai mai comandato al mattino? Hai mostrato il suo luogo all’aurora,
13 For taking hold of the ends of the earth, till the wicked are shaken from its surface?	13 perché prenda i lembi della terra e da essa ne scuota i malvagi?
14 The earth is changed as is clay by the seal, and dyed as though it were a garment;	14 Essa prende forma come creta sotto il sigillo e si presenta come una veste.
15 But from the wicked the light is withheld, and the arm of pride is shattered.	15 Allora è tolta ai malvagi la loro luce e viene fiaccato il braccio che si alzava.
16 Have you entered into the sources of the sea, or walked about in the depths of the abyss?	16 Sei disceso alle sorgenti del mare, nel fondo dell’abisso hai tu passeggiato?
17 Have the gates of death been shown to you, or have you seen the gates of darkness?	17 Hai scoperto le porte della morte hai visto le porte dell’ombra di morte?
18 Have you comprehended the breadth of the earth? Tell me, if you know all:	18 Hai compreso la vastità della terra? Dillo, se sai tutto ciò!
19 Which is the way to the dwelling place of light, and where is the abode of darkness,	19 Per quale strada abita la luce, dove le tenebre hanno la dimora
20 That you may take them to their boundaries and set them on their homeward paths?	20 perché tu le sappia condurre ai loro domini e rimettere sui sentieri delle loro case?
21 You know, because you were born before them, and the number of your years is great!	21 Certo, lo sai, perché allora eri già nato e il numero dei tuoi giorni è grande!
22 Have you entered the storehouse of the snow, and seen the treasury of the hail	22 Sei andato ai serbatoi della neve, hai veduto i serbatoi della grandine,
23 Which I have reserved for times of stress, for the days of war and of battle?	23 che io riservo per i momenti di angoscia per i giorni di guerra e di battaglia?
24 Which way to the parting of the winds, whence the east wind spreads over the earth?	24 Per quali vie di dissipa la nebbia e si spande il vento d'oriente sulla terra?
25 Who has laid out a channel for the downpour and for the thunderstorm a path	25 Chi aprì agli acquazzoni i canali e una strada al rombo dei tuoni,
26 To bring rain to no man's land, the unpeopled wilderness;	26 così che piova su terre senza uomini, su deserti dove non c’è alcun uomo,
27 To enrich the waste and desolate ground till the desert blooms with verdure?	27 per irrigare regioni desolate e aride e farvi sbocciare l’erba verde?
28 Has the rain a father; or who has begotten the drops of dew?	28 Ha forse la pioggia un padre? E chi genera le gocce di rugiada?
29 Out of whose womb comes the ice, and who gives the hoarfrost its birth in the skies,	29 Da qual seno esce il ghiaccio e da brina del cielo chi la genera?
30 When the waters lie covered as though with stone that holds captive the surface of the deep?	30 Le acque si indurano come pietra e la superficie dell’abisso si coagula.
31 Have you fitted a curb to the Pleiades, or loosened the bonds of Orion?	31 Puoi tu annodare le briglie alle Pleiadi o sciogliere i legami di Orione?
32 Can you bring forth the Mazzaroth in their season, or guide the Bear with its train?	32 Fai tu apparire a suo tempo la Corona e l’Orsa con i suoi piccini la guidi tu?
33 Do you know the ordinances of the heavens; can you put into effect their plan on the earth?	33 Conosci tu le leggi del cielo o regoli tu il suo influsso sulla terra?
34 Can you raise your voice among the clouds, or veil yourself in the waters of the storm?	34 Puoi tu alzare la voce fino alle nubi perché ti ricoprano di acqua abbondante?
35 Can you send forth the lightnings on their way, or will they say to you, "Here we are"?	35 Se tu scagli i fulmini, partono e ti dicono: “Eccoci qua”?
36 Who puts wisdom in the heart, and gives the cock its understanding?	36 Chi ha messo la sapienza nell’ibis e chi ha dato al gallo l’intelligenza?
37 Who counts the clouds in his wisdom? Or who tilts the water jars of heaven	37 Chi può contare le nubi con precisione e chi fa inclinare gli otri del cielo
38 So that the dust of earth is fused into a mass and its clods made solid?	38 per fondere la polvere in un blocco e perché le zolle si attacchino insieme?
39 Do you hunt the prey for the lioness or appease the hunger of her cubs,	39 Vai tu a caccia di preda per la leonessa e sazi tu l’appetito dei leoncelli,
40 While they crouch in their dens, or lie in wait in the thicket?	40 quando si accovacciano nelle loro tane quando stanno in agguato nella macchia?
41 Who provides nourishment for the ravens when their young ones cry out to God, and they rove abroad without food?	41 Chi prepara al corvo il pasto, quando i suoi nati gridano a Dio e vagano spinti dalla fame?
